hey philo,
i congratulate you. you are one of the very few ive seen here who can actually :cordially: disagree .
i wish more here were capable . so much of what is disagreed upon is opinion, and not fact. and the ability to allow someone else to have an opinion, with out being sarcastic or condescending is the mark of intelligence. and you my friend possess that.

Agreed.

Excellent thread, phil. Hmmm....

The level of "passion" one exihibits is neither a sign of intelligence or lack of it.

Uncommonly common, is the notion that when you belong to one group, you tend to see the nafarious in all the others. the immigration reform bill can't be the immigration reform bill ... it has to be the scamnesty bill. The timetable to withdraw from Iraq, can't be a timetable for withdrawl, it has to be the date of surrender.

......far from being a scattered post i thought your writing was extremely helpful and a good summation of the situation. i've quoted the one paragraph because it seems to me to beg the question.......where does the unwillingness to see the other sides point of view come from? i'm not sure there is an answer to it, but.....well, we have to try. [:)]

okies....maybe now is the time to reveal my tentative hypothesis.
Is it possible that the viewpoints we tend to identify as right wing are sensible responses to frontier environments, and those we tend to identify as left wing sensible responses to highly developed environments? Frontiers need individuals to make them livable in........highly developed environments only work when people co-operate at fairly high levels........

Thus, when Merc and i disagree,  it's less to do with our sense of ethics and more that we are products of our respective cultures. Me from the UK......proudly stamping out wilderness for centuries.......Merc from the US, land of the free and home to the brave, the big wide sky.

Oh, so right-wingers are hillbillies, and leftists are city-sophisticates...... [:D]

Just kidding!

There may indeed be something to it, phil.........

....eeeep, that's not quite what i had in mind......lol........to be honest it's a thought that has occured to me since moving to northern BC in Canada. Almost a halfway house between the UK and the US.

I strongly resent your misuse of the term "Social Security" -- I paid into the system all of my working life - and now am retired using the funds as promised. Why do so many think that the SS system is "working the system"? It's Paid insurance, and yes, it's in trouble, because the administrations of both parties have depleted it by misuse of the funds. It's also a fact that many slackers are relying on the gov't to support them - and that's wrong, whether you are right or left of center politically. Beware of extremists on either side of the fence.

***edited for spelling***

If it was not abused people would be collecting 100g per year retirement but they abuse it such that people only collect a pitance at poverty level.   you are very correct and that is why people like yourself have a valid right to be pissed to the max!

SS was never menat to be used in place of raising taxes.

There are those that seem to value a system where solutions will find themselves, given enough room. This manifests in a attitude that the free market and open competition will be the best solution to any problem, and when you remove competition, or overly regulate it, the baby will be thrown out with the bath water. This point of view can be disputed, or supported.

This is where the lack of "trust" from some on the left comes in; they see what you just posted as a cover for greed, rather than a legitimate viewpoint.

Massive offensive comment: About 99% of people can't debate or discuss ... they can only speak in buzz words.

Offensive, perhaps, but a lot of truth in it. I'd only argue the percentage, saying maybe 70%?

Again, a very good post.

You did pretty damn good yourself, caitlyn.

The problem is that there are to many answers for it.  trying to pigeon hole this is like fitting an ocean into a 5 gallon can.

The reasons can range from
partisonship
naivity
ignorance
arrogance
personal experience
denial
better educated
less educated
incomprehension
comprehension
and on and on endlessly

I'm not sure that 100g would be there, but certainly more than there is now [sm=whiteflag.gif]

I was fortunate to do a bit of saving on my own. I feel serious sympathy for anyone that has to rely on Social Security alone.

Wait a second. Speaking for myself, I'm not taking a shot at anyone. I didn't see you saying passion equals intelligence either, and you weren't the object of my agreement.

hehehehe, is it something to do with the prevailing wind?

......obviously, my hypothesis wont describe the actions and political leanings of everyone, i was just thinking of it more as a sort of eternal thumb on the scales.....skewing results in one direction rather than the other......

uwinceismile -> RE: political solutions (6/30/2007 3:50:24 PM)

level,
perhaps i was too quick to pluralize my statement. .... i wasnt suggesting you were .
i will often end my post with the words,,friend, or friends :)
in hopes of showing no real hard feelings. after all, this is cyber land

.......do you really see the dynamic involved as utterly random or is there, perhaps, an underlying pattern?

......for some reason that conjures an image in my mind of people with enormous heads.....i know, i'm sick.[:D]
Is it always as simple as that though? For instance you and i have argued hard in the past, while i can't deny an element of ego to those arguments, don't you think there was some other factor at work there as well? Something cultural maybe?

uwinceismile -> RE: political solutions (6/30/2007 3:53:52 PM)

realone,
what does.."raise the price" mean?
