i would say the grass roots of both parties were glad to see Saddam go. Just not in the manner it happened. If the grass roots were against Blair ect, why do they vote him in come election time. The simple answer to that is there is no real alternative as both Labour and Conservative policies are not to far apart.

To my mind it was all too easy to see the bigger problems would come once Saddam had gone. Major said we would be in the Balkans a year, yet it was more than ten years before the troops were finally pulled out. The biggest problem the west has is this, we are trying to impose a democratic society on Countries which dont, and in some cases wont ever work that way. Many Countries still have Tribal based ways of governing and why should they change just to suit us.

Regards Manchester, they thought they were safe before, until the IRA changed tactics, so i would still say be vigilant, although i do accept your point on the issue.

NG - you know thats not what I said and as much as I adore you I am not going to fall for you political attempts to swing my words your way.  Damn you could give the conservatives a run for their money!

All the thread was about was about was I am still going into London, whether they bomb or not.  I'm not a politician like yourself so there is no alternative underlying agenda.  The fear thang is simply in response to what Phil said and it lit a bulb above my head last night. But your the one focusing on the whole unite bit of my post.  My point on that was that Mr Brown said we should be united and resolute, which to me seems like bollocks.(Hence the rather catchy title ) because no one is united - simply arguing on who's fault it really is - whereas the terrorists just unite and well, still terrorise.

Me - I would rather just go into london this week and know that I am gonna have a blast (if not literaly).  And if I don't, the only person I can blame for having a boring time - Is me.

Peace

I don't see any time around you as possibly being boring

Hmmm, the "let's unite" approach seems to be key to your OP, and you're still making the point about people blaming each other, rather than unite.

If the thread is about going to London next week, why wouldn't you, Dark? The chances of you being a victim of a bomb are upwards of 10,000 to 1. 'Don't know about you, but I don't live my life based on the off-chance something might happen. You've far more chance of getting mugged, or having to pay 4 quid for a coffee in some god forsaken coffee shop called starbucks or something surrounded by people with books entitled "little boy under the stairs" or something or other........"look at me, I read books, aren't I intelligent....in fact, I'm so intelligent, I pay 4 quid for the privilege when I could do it for free in my home or outside on a seat in the square". Personally, I'm far more concerned about this culture of style over substance than the possibility of a bomb. For my money, this is the biggest threat to the English way of life. Well, the Northern way of life. I don't see anyone converting to Islam or going to the local mosque, but I do increasingly see a nation of wine snobs and dreamers sat in coffee shops having overdosed on too many episodes of Friends. Where did it all go wrong, eh? Pigeon racing, leek showing, football, workmen's clubs, fish and chips - is your mouth watering yet, Dark?

I wouldn't disagree on the Saddam point, but the difference is that the grass roots of the Labour Party knew that Saddam was a by-product of the invasion, not the reason.

Why did the grass roots vote for Blair? because the Labour Party is a big part of many peoples' lives and they'd rather work to change the leader, than leave the party.

The proof will be in the pudding. Blair has gone. Let's see what Brown does about Iraq. I wouldn't bet my house on it either way.

The biggest problem for the West, and this extends beyond government to the people, is the belief that Westerners are virtuous i.e. the belief they have the one true answer to the world's problems. The obvious conclusion is they go charging around the world with their one true answer.

It's all ifs and buts, Politesub. I wouldn't be vigilant in London or anywhere.

For fish and chips?  Absolutely!
But seriously NG - that would be fine, but what would be better is when ya come down 'sarf and I cook you a good old fry up of sausage, fried bread, tomatoes, egg and you can sit and munch black pudding with Darcy and me.

I'm game enough, but can you keep your promises? :-)

I'm in Cornwall at the back end of July. Then again, a simple Northern lad like me can't keep up with you jetsetters down there flitting between London and your Cornwall holiday homes. Are you in London or Cornwall these days?

Any chance of throwing in a few rashers of bacon, too?.......plenty of toast to mop up the tomato juice, and defintely washed down with a pot of tea. Throw in a few hash browns and I'll walk over broken glass to get down to your place ;-)

The English I know can't be arsed with this whole farce, and the complete distrust of British authorities means most of us aren't interested in what comes out of their mouths. The result is a people more at home with a beer down the pub, than being "vigilant".

Ha - Holiday home I wish!
Nope, not in Cornwall these days - I moved to be closer to Darcy - relocation, relocation and all that!  Although I do get to go visit friendsand family in cornwall still!  But when you are in London, I would be more than happy to serve up that fry up!  Yes, bacon can be on the menu, toast - np - and as for the tea - what's your poison?  Typhoo or one of those fancy pants ones like Earl Grey or Breakfast?
