you should start to get you pet used to gunshots..
and let him know .. there is nothing bad when a gun gets off.. after a while your pet will no react nerves about loud noises anymore .. thats how policedogs are trained .. but we start with them in a puppy age to do so.. good luck

She is a 7 year old german sheppard.

im not sure if she would eat a valium.  i cant ask the nieghbors to stop- i suppose if it dragged into augaust i could.

anyhow the poor dog is very upset.  she did some damage to teh house over it.

i guess they have sensitive hearing.

some human pills are very toxic to give a pet. she wont drink beer- she is too smart for that!!!!  :-)

A quiet dark closet with her favorite blankets  or bed with me is how I deal with them and my hyper border collie.
Mine is even bad when it storms lighting and thunder drive her nuts.

years ago- i knew someone that took their dog to the vet right before the holiday and had it sedated,

other then this- she is a longtime pet. best dog ive ever had. very loyal.  i also have a parrot- parrots are a whole different animal. wow.

i dont think it phazes the bird. he is very aware of his room--- he knows we are "up" when im online.  after months he finally will say hello.

he makes a sound of an orgasm too, which made me wonder if he masterbates- or the prior owner had a great sex life. :-)

I have one who doesn't care for fireworks either... her poor reaction started because of a bad neighbor from years ago. The jerk tossed a jacket of firecrackers across the fence & they landed on her. There is no convincing her that no harm will come to her from the sounds.

She has never wrecked the house over it but she will duck for cover.

I think the closet might be your best option. At least there the house won't be wrecked & it is less likely that she will hurt herself.

As for telling the neighbors to stop... you know as well as I do that no good will come from that.

bingo on the neighbors - it would start a fued. which i dont want.

the thing is they have 2 dogs, one was even kid napped.  im new on the block- and no way can i appear as a spoiler.

i notcied they do keep it to 10-15 minutes.... so at least that is doable.

believe you me, i seek no trouble from my neighbors.  we need to stand together to keep the crime out. now more then ever.

they were suspicious of me- and everyone wanted this place. a forclosure at cheap price. so there is abit of hard feeelings that i pulled the strings to make it mine.  :-)

then you have two choices...  forgo the festivities & stay in with doggie or shut her up in the closet... if both dogs freak out, then put one in one closet & one in another

Personally, as a pet owner, I would stay in with the dogs so that home & beast come to no harm.

Ideas:
-Ear muffs of some type. (May need one of those cone things around their head to pretend it from scratching it off.)
-Vet may be able to give you some mild setatives to just help keep the dog calmer.
-Wear the dog out. (Such as, put the dog on a leash, if need be, and run around for a while before the evening. Make sure it's good and tired.)
-Quiet place. (Be it a basement, or, as others suggested, a closest.)
-Distraction. (TV up a bit louder than normal, chew bone, etc. The TV will help discourage the dog from noticing the fireworks being as loud as they'd sound against a quiet setting, and the chew bone will give the dog something else to focus on.)
-Hot, attractive, slutty dog of the other gender. (Or the same gender, depending on the dog.)

I work at an animal hospital, so I can try and give you some advice. Many dogs have this issue...there are sedatives that can be used, such as valium. The tablets are very small, she would eat then right in food.

Also though it's a bit late for this year, there are herbal medications that act as general anti-anxiety. One of them is called NurtiCalm but generally they take a small measure of time before being fully effective, usually a week to a month.  If you go to a health food store you can find Bach's Flower remedies - look for one called Rescue Remedy. One or two drops is the usual dose for a nervous dog.

Apart from that, you can try to speak with a behavioralist about fixing the source of her anxiety. Or just take her somewhere away from the noise. :)

Best of luck!

I wouldnt dose he yourself, Id honestly talk to a vet.

I would use a dog crate instead of a closet, if she has enough room to back up and throw herself onto the door she can hurt herself in a panic. Put her ina crate and cover it with blankets, it will muffle out alot of the sound.

My rottwieler is terrified of lightning storms, she comes in and cowers under the bed.

If your neighborhood gets really rambuctous, try boarding her somewhere for the night.

I try to avoid all drugs, prescription, over the counter, and illegal....but thats just me.

And personally, I wouldnt yell at her for being distructive if the cause was true panic. She didnt do it to be dis-obediant. My rotty went through a window in my house to get at someone outside. She didnt do it to be distructive, she was trying to protect my UM.

i admire you for that. im a walking pharmacy.  i never touch street stuff, but medication can improve ones life.....when properly used.  trouble is one build a tolerance. someone would have a hard time drugging me.
amzing what the body can do. you migh see me post about hydrating myself. it is a poisen....and must be flushed. so i drink alot of water.
keep up the good work. i wish it were easy for me to do so...

I used to be that way, I had knee surgery right out of high school (sports injury) and duitifully took all the prescription pain killers the docs gave me, and when I built up a tolerance to those, they gave me stronger ones. To the point that I was taking pills constantly, some pills to counteract the effects of the first pills. They were tearing up my insides more and more. I finally stopped taking them compleatly, took a while to flush my system, but my digestive system is slowly healing, Ill probably always have heartburn now, the pain killers ate away some of the lining of my esophagus, but its getting better with natural medicines.

Your body will probably take longer than mine, seeing as how the gall bladder is one of those organs that helps cleanse the body. Definantly keep up the water regimen, but be careful about flushing out the good things too. You can actually dehydrate by drinking too MUCH water as it also flushes the electrolytes out of your system. I would say it was a good 6 months of taking nothing at all before I actually began to feel better, but it was probably longer than that before I was compleatly clean. There are products out there that are blood/liver/bile/colon cleansers, and as long as you do your research, many of them are great products when used safetly and correctly. Can help quite a bit, but with a few of them I dont suggest spending large amounts of time out of walking distance of a restroom. When using them of course, even more liquids are necessary.
