uwince,

We had those blasted thingamajigs here for about a year. The company made money hand over fist but didn't live up to its promises with regard distrubuting the city's share of it (the largest portion slated to go to the schools). People went NUTS when they found out. The cameras were dismantled and I believe I remember a unamimous vote on turning the parts into flaming catapult projectiles (or perhaps I am not remembering things correctly). Good luck with that.

Oh bloody el; you're just pissed because they work, can't do the time, don't do the crime.

I did some work for a company that sells them, installs them; interesting, you can zoom in and read the information on your driver's license with clarity; from atop those poles, and evewn farther. Remember, they are only for traffic control, you are not under survallence.

ElectraGlide -> RE: omg!!! TRAFIIC CAMERAS SUCK!!! (7/4/2007 10:27:32 PM)

They do suck, we got none here in the county that I live in. We have them in Delaware. When I drive to Delaware Park Casino I am very carefull. I never run a light on purpose, but they drive like nuts and push you through a intersection in North Delaware. The light always changes when you get close and you would still skid through the intersection and not stop at the light.

Sucks to be me.

They make nice target practice!

LadyEllen -> RE: omg!!! TRAFIIC CAMERAS SUCK!!! (7/5/2007 4:13:51 AM)

Yet again..... you think you've got it bad!

We've had these things for years now and theyre all over the place. On my 200 mile trip to the office each month I must pass at least 75 cameras of various sorts. One of the companies that makes them started in my town.

We have GATSO - these are the boxes with the camera that flashes. We have average speed cameras that time you between two points. We have automatic number plate recognition cameras that can check in an instant whether you paid your road tax, have a roadworthiness certificate and/or insurance - and more ominously if the vehicle (or driver) is wanted (which is OK as long as we have a nice government) and so on. There are so many of these cameras that its quite possible to track the movements of any vehicle - and hence the driver too, because these cameras are clear enough to identify the person at the wheel. You go to fill up with fuel, and there's a camera that reads your number plate before the pumps are switched on. Parking too.

And all these traffic cameras are as nothing compared to the cameras watching the people not in cars.

And the best of it is that we also have a points system - get 12 points and you lose your licence. Speeding? 3 points (plus a fine) for instance - and thats if you admit it; you can still ask for a hearing but the penalty becomes higher when youre found guilty, which you will be (its on camera - irrefutable etc!). The only means I ever heard of to challenge these things is by way of querying their calibration or questioning by what authority they are being used - but that only works of course if they cant find the paperwork.

Now dont get me wrong. These cameras are important to help with road safety and with tracking down those who are unqualified to drive, have no insurance etc. But, the way they are used is a problem - the motorist (which is almost everyone) is being pursued relentlessly by them and it isnt always about safety or other viable motives, but a financial agenda - not only the fines but the huge increase in insurance premia that a conviction brings. Yes, have cameras outside the schools and fuck anyone to death who speeds past them during school hours - but does it make sense to convict if one drives 5mph too fast past a school at 2am? Yes, have cameras on the motorways (freeways) and fine for speeding during busy periods, but for speeding on an empty road?

And dont even get me started on this cellphone nonsense. How they can maintain that its perfectly safe for a 25 year old police officer to drive using a radio or cellphone, whilst I with 21 years experience am a menace for doing so, I dont understand. Again, we legislate for the idiots I suppose. If cellphones are such a distraction then we also need to rip out every stereo system from every car, and also stop people smoking whilst driving.

E
(no driving convictions whatsoever in 21 years)

Serious question, so bear with me.  i certainly understand the reason the camera's are in place, but what happens if, say, you let someone borrow your car and they run a red light.  It's considered a moving violation and the only info the authorities have to go on is the lisence plate.  So, the owner of the car gets the moving violation even though they weren't driving?

*edited to add* i think i know what the answer's going to be so i think i'll just have to NOT let anyone borrow my car *smile*

wandersalone -> RE: omg!!! TRAFIIC CAMERAS SUCK!!! (7/5/2007 4:24:51 AM)

I am pretty sure that the last time I got a camera fine there was some sort of declaration that you could fill in on the back if someone else was using your car.  You could also ask to see the actual photo.... I am not sure how this actually works as I have always been the culprit when caught! You may have to pay the fine and then dispute it or something.

I think those cameras suck. they are all over town, and the company that supplies them and maintains them takes so much of the funds generated, bad deal for the city and drivers. Reminds me of Big Brother, and lost personal rights to privacy in the US.

My son was running an errand for me that was very time sensitive, so he went thru and got busted. We split the cost, and he was very responsible about it. I was very proud of him.

Hail to the Chief (Not!)

This is just an observation...if one were to take one of those privacy screens that we put on our computer monitors and attach it to your license plates then the camera cannot read your plate....but then that would be soooo wrong[;)]

MstrDouglas -> RE: omg!!! TRAFIIC CAMERAS SUCK!!! (7/5/2007 4:39:26 AM)

It might take a little digging, through the traffic laws, but check to see if your state, county, or city, has a law requiring that the ticket be issued by the witnessing officer.  If it does that might be a good way to challenge one.  Be a little hard for that damned camera to climb down off the pole to write the ticket.....but I'd love to see one do it.  It is just a thought, I know of at least two states that have that law, however the courts dont enforce it unless someone challenges a ticket based on it.
People are getting to the point they feel it is just easier to pay the fine than take time off work and go to court to fight a traffic ticket.  So it becomes easy money for the local government.

edited for my bad spelling...not enough coffee yet this morning

FrenchConnection -> RE: omg!!! TRAFIIC CAMERAS SUCK!!! (7/5/2007 4:42:50 AM)

A good friend of mine in TN actually beat the camera a few years ago.  There -was- a law on the books that required a duly appointed officer of the court (a police officer) to present any ticket to the perp.  Since he received the summons by mail, he challenged it on the grounds that he had not been properly served.  The judge smiled and threw it out.

In GA, I knew another person who requested a "jury trial" since this was a "criminal offense".  I'm not sure how that worked out.

farglebargle -> RE: omg!!! TRAFIIC CAMERAS SUCK!!! (7/5/2007 4:46:12 AM)

I can imagine that if you're really sharp, attacking the chain-of-custody of the evidence shouldn't be all that difficult.

Q: "Where did his alleged "Photograph" come from?"

A: The Computer prints them.

Q: "The Computer prints them"?

A: Yes

Q: Since we all know how easily computers can fake pictures, can you PROVE this image is original and untouched?

A: Uh. The Computer Prints Them.

Q: "Are the original images cryptographically signed when captured"?

A: Uh....

Q: "What modifications to the images occcur?"

A: Uh....

Thanks, Wanders...makes sense *smile* Don't know if i'd like to test the theory though with car insurance rates as high as they are lol.

For the record, this hasn't happened to me...yet.  But i'm sure it will at some point...Sir is a traffic ticket magnet...and He will sometimes use my car instead of His truck..that, coupled with the fact that Portland is starting to install the cameras just gives me a bad feeling. [;)]

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: omg!!! TRAFIIC CAMERAS SUCK!!! (7/5/2007 5:06:45 AM)

one of our service tech got a ticket from a camera......it clearly stated no points would be assessed on the letter that accompanied the lovely pics......we joked that it was a money maker only after reading this......

i make my judgement on whether to go through a light after i look in my rearview mirror.......sometimes the ticket would be cheaper than the repairs from the asshole thats gonna rearend me if i choose to stop.......
