i just read a thread about legalizing drugs and wonder how many, if any of Y/you think prostitution should be legal.
personally, i think it should be. it will happen if it is legal or not, and has throughout history.
as i see it, if it were legal, the people who work in that industry could be monitored for their health and not allowed to work if they do not pass a weekly or monthly physical. it would cut down on the amount STD's that are spread in this way and the abuses from customers and pimps and yes, from the prostitutes too. the age of the workers could be checked and at least diminish the amount of minors that get involved.
the proceeds could be used to fund homes for orphaned or unwanted children, education, shelters for battered women and abused children, etc.
tell me what YOU think.

I have a buddy who is a brothel inspector (health department) in Neveda.  The ones working in the houses are far cleaner than the ones on the street or Craigslist.

Legalize drugs and prostitution and we could stop filling up the jails while making society safer.

i think u have already layed out a wonderful argument for it ... well done.

side note: it will happen if it is legal or not..... is no reason to legalize anything....
by that logic,,,, murder would qualify:)   lol

Prostitution IS legal in my part of the world (Australia)

Advantages

Sex workers can call the police for protection from abusive clients, bosses and co-workers
Regular health checks
The industry pays taxes like any other business and those taxes are spent on public health etc
Venues are clean and regularly checked by Council
Workers have rights like minimum salaries and maximum hours of work
Organised crime cannot make any money out of the sex industry anymore
Regular inspections keep drug dealers away from the workers
Over time, the social stigma of being a sex worker is breaking down
The jails aren't full of sex workers.  Our prison system is reserved for real crime
At least one brothel is so successful (the Daily Planet) that it is listed on the stock exchange
Professional dominatrixes and submissives can go about their business without threat of prosecution

Disadvantages

Its a shameful SIN and legalisation only encourages the dirty disease ridden practice (this is the religious view)
The workers don't like paying taxes and nor do the pimps
Every worker has a registration number (PCA number) she applies for annually or so, which removes her anonymity
Brothels are licensed by local Government - NO-ONE wants a brothel licence granted in their suburb.  Expensive court cases ensue to stop new brothels opening
Drug addicted and HIV positive workers cannot pass the health checks
Its expensive for clients compared to illegal street prostitution
We don't want sex tourism from countries where it is illegal like the US (excluding Nevada)
Legalisation doesnt stop illegal (and cheaper) prostitution, it just encourages more men to go to brothels

On balanc, I think it was a great idea to legalise prostitution.  This is a moral issue not a legal one and each individual should be free to make their own moral choices

Sounds like a good idea to me. If they dont hire drug addicts, it might make a drug addict prostitute not walk the unsafe streets. It would provide a safer alternative for the customers also. At one time nobody wanted gambling, such as lottery and casinos, it seems like that is spreading. I would rather have legal prostitution then legal drug use.

I'm not an advocate of legal prostitution, but I do think that if it is ever done that it should be implemented with a kind of legal zone. Boston has something unofficial like this in the area known as Red Square. The police pretty much ignore prostitutes so long as they stay in that one square block area. Outside Red Square they will be arrested and charged. I like the legal zone idea because people would go into that zone knowing what to expect and probably looking for it. In this way you could avoid having prostitutes hanging around outside schools or churches or playgrounds. The one thing I have never understood is Nevada. Seems like Vegas ought to be the legal zone and the rest of the state illegal. I suppose they were trying to keep vice and gambling separated so the Mafia types of early Vegas couldn't take over the entire town. It just seems as though places like Vegas or Atlantic City, maybe even Miami, would serve as good legal zones, but definitely not Orlando. Who wants Cinderella asking their kid of he would like an Around the World?

Definitely legalized.  In fact I'd want it to become once again the revered and sacred practice as it once was- on par with priests and preachers for the connection and help they bring to parishoners.

The idea of legalising prostitution is so sensible that it is unlikely to come about soon. IMO

Having said that many of the women who provide the service seem to be in a somewhat precarious mental state. NO?

Versus lawyers or psychiatrists?  Are we talking street whores or professional escorts?

Predominantly but not exclusivley street workers
Notice I only said "some"   etc.

My guess is the happier ones are those who provide Domme/Subbe or Fetish services in general. Intimate sexual activity with ALL and sundry must be a bit soul destroying. NO?

I'm all for legal prostitution. It's honorable work (other than the drugs that have corrupted it) plain and simple.

Could the reason prostitution is illegal in Clark county (Las Vegas) be because it would help the money stay in the casinos and in the state's pocket?.. I could only speculate.

Either way, I believe it should be separated (zoned, if you will) away from the general population. If there were prostitutes openly and legally hanging around the Las Vegas casinos.. lol.. let's just say that I would find that to be highly inappropriate.  The  Vegas-Is-A-Family-Town tourism campaign may have failed, but there's certainly more to Vegas than how-many-sins :)

Why not?  I'm curious.  I've never heard a great argument for keeping it criminal.

I just have to say if you legalize it you can regulate it...same with drugs as a whole. Keeping things in the back alley just leads to more crime. A perfect example in USA history is Prohibition, when they made alcohol illegal. All it did was lead to bootlegging, organized crime, making common people criminals, etc. Did they stop people from drinking alcohol...no. All they created was more crime. Once Prohibition was repealed crime went down. It is a simple matter of economic supply and demand. So long as there is demand somebody will supply it, doesn't matter if it is illegal or not. The more illegal it is the greater the risk and thus the greater the profit. One thing the market economy has taught people that if you can make a profit then somebody will supply the demand...again simple economics.

Now by legalizing consentual crimes the such as drugs and prostitution, the government and society can better regulate to the good of society and stop wasting resources fighting a war on crimes that only hurt those that do them and no others. Not saying that they only affect the criminal and no others, after all if you are married to a drug addict the money they spend can hurt a family financially and in other ways. But if how someone spends their money is a crime then alot more people should be put away for how foolish they spend their money. As for the other consequences of one's stupidity it is not a crime to be stupid and should not be.

As with alcohol, it is better to go after the consequences of being stupid than after the crime of just drinking alcohol. After all a person can be fired if they show up at work drunk and can be locked away and fined for being drunk out in public. Responsible use even if it is stupid though is not a crime. It is easier for society as a whole to regulate bad behavior than to sweep it under the carpet and ignore the problem or to try and fight something that is unwinnable.

I'm not advocating crimes that hurt others directly should be made legal because you cannot get rid of them either, such as murder, theft, etc. Just crimes that basically one does consentually that do not harm others such as drugs and prostitution. Yes someone who gets AIDS from a prostitute and then comes home to his wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend etc does cause them direct harm, but I would argue that if its illegal or not they are the type of person who would harm their significant other in their life no matter if its legal or not. At least if its legalized the chances of harming another is reduced but not eliminated completely. And then it is up to the other to decide if they wish to remain with the person that is causing them harm potentially or not. After all an alcoholic can cause just as much harm as anything else yet alcohol is legal. Alcohol though is regulated and there is help for those that need help.

So I agree with others...lets just legalize it and then regulate it socially and in places where we can make a difference.

Robert

Actually, in my country it is legal. I think the advantages are huge when it comes to monitoring health, drug abuse, preventing slave trade and preventing minors from prostituting themselves, although some bad stuff likely still happens in the less controllable escort service sector.

The only reason it is illegal is due to morals and religion.
I read where they did a statistical study and it found that in areas around the world with regulated legal prostitution, the crime rate is lower and the number of STDs and HIV actually drop.

I always get a laugh when I watch that show "Cops" and they got half the police force undercover and on overtime to bust prostitutes with guns drawn. And then some guy who thinks he's hot-s*** gets on and says "we got a lot of bad guys off the street today..."  LOL!!

How do you figure that legal prostitution stops the slave trade? It certainly hasn't elsewhere.

I just moved back to the US from Chile, after being there for three years.

In Chile, prostitution isn't specifically illegal, but neither is it 'legal' or regulated.  A very lackadaisical attitude exists; essentially, women are allowed to practice it, and men are allowed to contract it.  Brothels, on the other hand, are strictly forbidden; thus one simply browses the classified ads, or visits a 'coffee shop with legs' and asks for a sandwich.  There are also very exclusive night clubs, with hundred dollar entrance fees; all of the women there are considered professional, private escorts who may leave the club with you, at her choice.  Consider, too, that this is a 90% Catholic country.

Somehow, God hasn't seen fit to strike down this heathen place ;)

I think laws prohibiting prostitution are on par with 35 mile speed limits on four lane highways; they only add a burden to law enforcement, and certainly don't improve the quality of life for anyone.  Truly, they are leftovers from another era, when law was drawn almost straight from Leviticus.  I think prostitution should be legalized and regulated; I think streetwalking should be illegal, for example.  If your computer was broken, would you pick up a geek walking the streets, take him home, and tear apart your laptop?  Places where the activity is monitored, regulated, inspected, and taxed would offer women who walk the streets a chance for some sort of stability, regular hours, mandatory in-house STD and drug testing, access to quality STD preventative measures, even instruction on how to practice safe sex; just because she works as a prostitute, doesn't me she knows how to use a condom.  It also provides security for the girl without the need for a pimp stuffing her veins with smack to keep her high and docile, in exchange for 80% of what she earns

Stephan
