Mercnbeth -> "If you wanna save the planet, jump up and down!" (7/9/2007 7:46:34 AM)

The quote is from Madonna. According to that beacon of contradictory actions and words that's all it takes. I'm glad we've gotten this one behind us. Let's see, 'Farm Aid' solved the family farm problem. Since 'Live Aid' there are no more hungry children. The rain forest has been saved by whatever it is that Sting has been pontificating about. Now we can put global warming in the rear view mirror.

It seems that the only credibility these events get have been reduced to the self-important organizers and hypocritical pontificators about how everyone else but them should live. We saved 20,000 tons of carbon emissions by not flying to any of the events, so we didn't feel guilty about cranking up the hot-tub all day.

Maybe the best result of the global yawn that this generated will be prevention that another will occur.
quote:

As global satellite multi-media musical entertainment, Live Earth was just about adequate. As a platform for stadium politics, it was a dismal affair. "Can you help save the earth?" bellowed Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles. Cue muted murmur of support.

"We might be screwed if that's the response," he half-joked.

I felt sorry when the Messiah for the movement, Al Gore, was in the spotlight. Poor Al was all set to be important again and his son gets caught driving around LA with his own personal portable pharmacy. He was set up for 100's of live interviews on Friday but canceled most of them when it was obvious that every interview would include questions about his namesake.

quote:

The whole tone felt misjudged: Al Gore appeared by satellite, to no great reaction in the stadium, and seemed to be addressing a small audience of native Americans, not seizing the world by the reins.

The message itself was confused: Keane performed in front of the legend "Insulate your ceilings and walls". Razorlight performed America to footage of penguins.

Duran Duran stuck to supermodels, but somehow tried to turn Girls on Film into an ecological anthem. Simon Le Bon urged the crowd to sing "Change, change, we gotta start the change" without much success, perhaps because he was having trouble singing it particularly well himself. Both quotes from source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2007/07/09/nosplit/bmyawn109.xml

Maybe the world is becoming more skeptical of these constructed 'movements'. Perhaps they are seeing behind the curtain and realize this is politically and economically motivated much more than altruistic. Taking normal standard deviations in weather patterns and exceptional occurrences as indications of trends and future guarantees is academically unfounded. Any model that represents predicting the future must be tested against real occurrences in the past. To date - no model has done so. No model that predicts the dire future 'global warming' catastrophe can be plugged in and used to predict the last global warming that saw wine grapes grow in the UK and gave Greenland its name.

And we're using the weather service as an 'expert' source. The same weather service that predicted that 2006 would be the WORST year for hurricanes in the US. Whoops - didn't happen; back the the drawing board - we meant 2007 would be the WORST! Whoops again - to date, there has not only been no major storms hitting the Southeast, but there are none forming in the south Atlantic. I guess they'll be predicting 2008 as the worst soon. Hey - one of these years they will be right; and then maybe someone will want to have 'Live Earth II'.

Can't wait to see Madonna perform "Like a Virgin" at 65.

I say we don't let cynicism and crap of life take away from the fact that calling more attention to the issue and working towards something productive is a good thing.

My issue is more with people who claim they can "buy offsets" and somehow that's the same as "being green."

one reason the stars take up causes is- their arsenal of lawyers and accountants tell them they have to spend ex amount of money- or pay it in taxes.

rememeber when a stink was made over 50 tax on gas?

BTW- hwo do we pay for Iraq again?

"Put It All On Plastic, And I Wonder Where We'll Be When The Bills Hit..."

RIP Brent Mydland

quote:

We don't own this place, though we act as if we did,
It's a loan from the children of our children's kids.
The actual owners haven't even been born yet.

But we never tend the garden and rarely we pay the rent,
Some of it is broken and the rest of it is bent
Put it all on plastic and I wonder where we'll be when the bills hit.

[Chorus:]
We can run,
But we can't hide from it.
Of all possible worlds,
We only got one:
We gotta to ride on it.
Whatever we've done,
We'll never get far from what we leave behind,
Baby, we can run, run, run, but we can't hide.
Oh no, we can't hide.

I'm dumpin' my trash in your back yard
Makin' certain you don't notice really isn't so hard
You're so busy with your guns and all of your excuses to use them.

Well, it's oil for the rich and babies for the poor,
We got everyone believin' that more is more,
If a reckoning comes, maybe we will know what to do then.

[Bridge:]
All these complications seem to leave no choice,
I heard the tongues of billions speak with just one voice,
Saying, "Just leave all the rest to me,
I need it worse than you, you see."
And then I heard...
The sound of one child crying.

Today I went walking in the amber wind,
There's a hole in the sky where the light pours in
I remembered the days when I wasn't afraid of the sunshine.

But now it beats down on the asphalt land
Like a hammering blow from God's left hand
What little still grows cringes in the shade like a bad vine.

Ah, the 'good intent' argument; opening up the war-chest of accusations possible for those not buying into the propaganda. Often used to rationalize bad decisions made on both sides of the political spectrum. I'll save the time and try to compile some so the that we can reference them by number:

  1. We have to do SOMETHING!
  2. We are exploiting third world countries.
  3. What about our children! (One of my personal favorites from the cult of 'child worship'.)
  4. One tenth of the planets population should be consuming 50% of the planets resources. (Pointing to the evil empire - US)\

I'm sure there are many more arguments coming from the 'good intent' argument in an effort to disarm and make evil anyone or anything with a contrary position.

Tell me, if 'good intent' is acceptable and used in this case why isn't it accepted and used when it comes to Iraq? Sure, similar to this event it didn't work out as the planners and organizers intended. It had nay sayers prior to its launching, but obviously there is no similar 'good intent' value put into the decision. As far as Iraq is concerned there was only hidden agenda, secret deals, poor planning, and bad information. No 'carbon offset' spared from the hot air of Monday morning quarterbacking.

Hey, I don't believe we should be there now. I want us to leave to allow the locals to once again go on killing each other with impunity. Turkey has massed 140,000 troops on the border just waiting for the US to leave. (Source: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070709/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_turkey_1 ) All those unfortunate enough to believe in the US commitment will experience much more than the head shaving given to French women who were complicit with their German occupiers. Damn - too bad and tough for them.

But in th case of Iraq, there was no 'good intent' only a desire for oil and to build up the stock value of Haliburton.

However, there is no preconceived 'good result' regarding the 'good intent' of leaving Iraq. Coming from that bastion of support of President Bush specifically and the Iraq war in general, here is the position of the NY Times and their senior war correspondent, John Burns, concerning the consequences of Iraq withdraw:
quote:

That conversation must be candid and focused. Americans must be clear that Iraq, and the region around it, could be even bloodier and more chaotic after Americans leave. There could be reprisals against those who worked with American forces, further ethnic cleansing, even genocide. Potentially destabilizing refugee flows could hit Jordan and Syria. Iran and Turkey could be tempted to make power grabs. Perhaps most important, the invasion has created a new stronghold from which terrorist activity could proliferate.
The administration, the Democratic-controlled Congress, the United Nations and America’s allies must try to mitigate those outcomes — and they may fail. But Americans must be equally honest about the fact that keeping troops in Iraq will only make things worse. The nation needs a serious discussion, now, about how to accomplish a withdrawal and meet some of the big challenges that will arise. Source: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/08/opinion/08sun1.html?pagewanted=1&ei=5087%0A&em&en=e5a24f27f2faf8bb&ex=1184126400

Help me with something I'm too dumb to figure out on my own. If Mr. Burns says the best course of action is for US withdraw from the region, how can he in the next paragraph think that somehow, after we're gone, the US and it's "allies" (HA! ) "mitigate" those outcomes? Who would/should trust us? Who in the region would be stupid enough to believe we would follow through with any political position. Oh - the UN? Sure - lets try that organization again - they've done such a great job in Darfur. More people have been killed and are dying today as a result of UN "action" than are being saved.

"Good intention" WOW - Instead of the ethic cleansing under Saddam we have destabilization being conducted by Islamic terrorists who have there own "good intentions" in mind.

"Throwing Stones"
Words by John Perry Barlow; music by Bob Weir
Barlow has posted the lyrics to his songs.

Picture a bright blue ball, just spinning, spinnin free,
Dizzy with eternity.
Paint it with a skin of sky,
Brush in some clouds and sea,
Call it home for you and me.

A peaceful place or so it looks from space,
A closer look reveals the human race.
Full of hope, full of grace
Is the human face,
But afraid we may lay our home to waste.

There's a fear down here we can't forget.
Hasn't got a name just yet.
Always awake, always around,
Singing ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.

Now watch as the ball revolves
And the nighttime falls.
Again the hunt begins,
Again the bloodwind calls.
By and by, the morning sun will rise,
But the darkness never goes
From some men's eyes.

It strolls the sidewalks and it rolls the streets,
Staking turf, dividing up meat.
Nightmare spook, piece of heat,
It's you and me.
You and me.

Click flash blade in ghetto night,
Rudies looking for a fight.
Rat cat alley, roll them bones.
Need that cash to feed that jones.
And the politicians throwin' stones,
Singing ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.

[Bridge:]
Commissars and pin-stripe bosses
Roll the dice.
Any way they fall,
Guess who gets to pay the price.
Money green or proletarian gray,
Selling guns 'stead of food today.

So the kids they dance
And shake their bones,
And the politicians throwin' stones,
Singing ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.

Heartless powers try to tell us
What to think.
If the spirit's sleeping,
Then the flesh is ink
History's page will thus be carved in stone.
And we are here, and we are on our own
On our own.
On our own.
On our own.

[Instrumental]

If the game is lost,
Then we're all the same.
No one left to place or take the blame.
We can leave this place and empty stone
Or that shinin' ball we used to call our home.

So the kids they dance
And shake their bones,
And the politicians throwin' stones,
Singing ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.

[Bridge two:] Shipping powders back and forth
Singing black goes south and white comes north.
In a whole world full of petty wars
Singing I got mine and you got yours.

And the current fashion sets the pace,
Lose your step, fall out of grace.
And the radical, he rant and rage,
Singing someone's got to turn the page.
And the rich man in his summer home,
Singing just leave well enough alone.
But his pants are down, his cover's blown...

And the politicians throwin' stones,
So the kids they dance
And shake their bones,
And it's all too clear we're on our own.
Singing ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.

Picture a bright blue ball,
Just spinnin', spinnin, free.
Dizzy with the possibilities.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.

We're happy to have her - though apparently she didnt come here that willingly. Something about claiming asylum on account of being disliked by certain Americans.....

I think she's excellent - and to be fair, when she first came on the scene I wrote her off as just more of the same poppy guff we were used to at the time. She proved to be far from that, and in my opinion at least I think she's achieved a lot for herself and for women as a whole for that matter.

And of course, that I can sing like her is important too!

I love Madonna!   She dared to "question" the Catholic church. Being a product of a parochial high school- I so wanted to tell em off!!!  IF there is such a thing as indoctrination- they do it in Catholic High Schools. We were "taught" we were nobody unless we were Catholic, and from Chicago.
When I seen the larger world- I did not appreciate how slanted this "truth" was!!!!
Mom is protestant- dad was catholic. When possible- I feel the catholic church used him/us/family. So I bounced between the 2 religions.

As I recall- a few stars left the US as they felt safer elsewhere. Especially for their kids.

Madonna dared to question the larger world- and Catholism to start with.

I like her music and her.

Treat her well, UK.   [I think we have a few of your stars as well] :-)

Is there anything more boring to read than song lyrics? What next - quoting bible verse as argument? Has the educational system made people so incapable of taking a position and making an intelligent point without name calling and profanity that we are reduced using song lyrics?

Can't wait for the next use of lyrics for a global movement. Perhaps Pepsi is working on a follow up of their "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" ad campaign.

Jump up and down?
But wouldn't that alienate the anti earthquake people?
Here we go again, people thinking that "artists" and musicians have something "profound" to say.
Why not Plumbers and Electricians?
Who says you have to sing or play some musical instrument to be "profound" or have "insight" that no-one else has?
I can play the blues harp (harmonica) and the fiddle, does that count? How many in here think I'm "profound?"
"Man,.....that Popeye is soooooo profound!"
And how about "Lounge Singers" and "Garage Bands", wouldn't they be "profound" too or is it only the people who sell a lot of records who have the qualifications to be "profound?"
How does one do the "crossover thing" from musician to "scientist?"
"Al, the planet doesn't have "a fever" it has a Headache from listening to your bullshit!"

It's poetry. And as such, beautiful.

It's music. And as such, more powerful than poetry alone.

I've seen those tunes performed in front of 60k+ audiences, with pretty much everyone singing along, in harmony.

Now stop and think about why they weren't performed during Live Earth.

That's right. Because Live Earth is a Production of The Man. Those who think for a second that it's purpose was Environmental Activism are kidding themselves, both supporters of LiveEarth, and detractors..

Until we hold CORPORATIONS accountable, as our Bitches, it ain't ever going to get better..

That's why GE wants you to install CFLs...

Look at all the free ad time they gave them this weekend.

Mercnbeth,

[sarcasm]

I agree that the world will be a happier and better place when everybody on it subscribes to your bitter disaffection , cynicism, hopelessness, and feelings of helplessness about doing something, anything, to try to make it a better place for oneself and other people.

I agree that it is so much easier to go through life screwing up the world as much as possible, in the belief that the old adage "He who dies with the most toys wins" is true.

[/sarcasm]
