MzMia -> Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants in Virginia (7/10/2007 2:53:25 PM)

Prince Willim County, in Northern Virginia about 40 minutes from Washington D.C. is
proposing and more than likely getting ready to pass and enforce some of the toughest
immigration laws in the country.

I live about 30 minutes away and I am watching what happens here with great interest.

On local talk radio, MANY people are calling in stating these laws will be in forced and that
they are fed up.
It is going to be real interesting in Prince William County real soon if these laws are passed, and more
importantly enforced.  ****The proposed measure requires that immigration status be checked before someone could use public services such as schools, libraries and swimming pools. The bill also requires police to check the residency status of anyone suspected of breaking the law. The measure would also force county police to ask about immigration during routine traffic stops.*** Prince William County Officials To Vote On Immigration Bill - News - MSNBC.com

How many more States have to do this before the Federal govt. gets up off of their asses and starts doing the job that we are PAYING them to do?
Bush is USELESS!
We haven't had a President this bad since Herbert Hoover!

if someone is suspected of breaking the law, and is questioned,,,,which happens thousands of times a day i would suspect. i think that is as good a time as any to check to see if someone is here llegally...
seems to make sense to me

MzMia... it is interesting.  Especially from another who lives about 30 mintues away.  My semi rural town has an area that gathers each morning waiting for day labor.  Most mornings the count is near 75 heads hoping for work.  This has been going on for a couple years now, very much against the favor of the local residents.  What is interesting is a few weeks ago while on my way to work as I passed there was one small group with a HUGE sign that said " NO AMANESTY"  the sign holder was not a local.

Ha, Ha, someone probably paid him to hold the sign for the day!

Ummm..."suspected" by whom?  That's clearly unconstitutional.

Actually, maybe not Popeye.
I listen to talk radio a lot, and tonight they were talking about this issue in VA.
We had a Latino American LEGAL immigrant call in and he said he was ashamed of the way
many from his country were behaving.
I have heard many LEGAL immigrants both Hispanic and non Hispanic state similar opinions.

MzMia -> RE: Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants in Virginia (7/10/2007 7:40:33 PM)

Look Amigo, if you are asked to prove that you are an American citizen,
then you should be able to prove it.
LOL, unconstitutional.
You have never been a victim of DWB.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants in Virginia (7/10/2007 9:52:58 PM)

So the fact that the police illegally harass black Americans means it should be OK for them to harass aliens too?

I'm missing your logic.

Yeah, we wouldn't want to INCONVENIENCE illegal aliens now, would we?
If a Police Officer asks someone to identify themselves I'm pretty sure the supreme court ruled that they do have to.
If a Cop asked me for my i.d. and I refused to comply what do you think would happen to me?
Illegal Aliens aren't entitled a lot of rights that citizens in this country have.
And, if they know that they're illegals they can be arrested on sight.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants in Virginia (7/11/2007 12:23:14 AM)

Popeye, it doesn't say that they're authorized to check the residency status of any illegal alien.  Hell, if the police KNEW that someone was an illegal alien, I'd say go right ahead.  But it says something different.  It says they're authorized to check the residency of anyone who seems suspicious.  And that includes you and me.

You've never heard of illegal searches and seizures?  There's a reason why they're unconstitutional.  I don't believe in undermining the Constitution of the United States, even if it happens to seem inconvenient now and then.  Of course, I'm aware that there are others who are only too eager to do just that.

Quivver -> RE: Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants in Virginia (7/11/2007 4:26:30 AM)

Checking on legal residence isnt an easy one, at least not for employers.
Before I got back into my (cough) profession of choice I worked on a
construction crew where I was one of the few that spoke english as
a first language.  When i asked the Project Manager about legal
status of a few he rolled his eyes and said they provided the proper
documentation, then went on to explain that the stuff used is
so good it takes awhile to prove it isnt good!
Then again there are a number of contractors who just want someone
who will work their ass off for 8 hours and be happy with a 100 bucks
for their days work.

popeye:
Tell us just how would you prove that you are an U.S. citizen.  Your drivers license does not verify that fact.  Your retired military ID does not prove that.  Your DAV license plate does not prove that.  So please tell us all just how does one prove that they are a U.S. citizen.  To the best of my knowledge a passport or your birth certificate is the only proof of U.S. citizenship.  Since we are not required to have a passport except to travel outside the U.S, that would seem to leave ones birth certificate as the only valid proof that you are a citizen.  I realize the case is different for naturalized citizens and holders of green cards etc.  I am talking about those of us that were born here.  Does this mean that we now have to carry our birth certificate with us?  This adds another wrinkle to the problem.  Your birth certificate has no picture on it, no finger print (usually just a foot print).  This would strike me as not only unenforcible but unconstitutional and will, if passed, be overturned in the CCA without even a fight.
Just some more "feel good legislation" for the bigots.

The bill passed late last night, with a few minor adjustments.
Now things are going to get very interesting.

thompsonx is right.. the USSC has ruled that police cannot follow a simple traffic stop/ticket with a non-consentual search to find other violations absent probable cause.

The demand that police check out drivers for illegal entry would lead to some very interesting PC statements.

'The car smelled of tacos, and norteno music was playing, and there were 13 of them in a Pinto, and they all looked like Cheech...'

I don't think that is gonna fly.
