BBBTBW -> Translatable? (7/11/2007 8:34:20 AM)

I received this in an e-mail today and not being a linguist I wasn't sure whether this is some type of language.  I have the feeling it is gibberish but I cannot be sure.  Does anyone recognize this as some type of language and if so, can you translate it for me?  Public forum is fine as far as I am concerned.  Has anyone else received anything like this?

sadkitty -> RE: Translatable? (7/11/2007 8:38:05 AM)

Yes if you read it carefully most of it is strange though

LaTigresse -> RE: Translatable? (7/11/2007 8:38:13 AM)

Frighteningly, it made perfect sense to me.

The person is from Yorkshire and is typing as he speaks rather than as it should be written. I have tried to do a similar thing with a southern accent and it is surprisingly difficult......at least it is for me.

RCdc -> RE: Translatable? (7/11/2007 8:39:58 AM)

To me, it reads as though a person from Yorkshire in the UK is speaking (it is also mentioned in the writing itself) - but they would not type like that!
I would assume the person is either 'trying' to be amusing, or just taking the piss - reading it, I would say it was bad taste and offensive actually - not sure if you would really want to know the translation.

Peace

It is such a waste of time.  I can't read it.

CuriousLord -> RE: Translatable? (7/11/2007 9:06:45 AM)

Translation:

"Hey, lady.
Back in the farm of sheep-shagger George, there isn't a word third. And since he's mean to foreign Russians, Sweedish, French, and Austrians, too. But someone sent two wooden [boats/boxes] to the coloines instead. Greed towards .."

Okay. That's my attempt at it. And I officially don't care about it anymore. Oddly enough, the "language" becomes less broken as the letter goes on.

BBBTBW -> RE: Translatable? (7/11/2007 9:09:48 AM)

give me a lesson on Yorkshireese

Back in the time of sheep shagger George, him that was the third one, he sent off his men to fight the Russians and Swedish, French and Austrians. But someone sent the wooden boat (?)across to the colonies instead. The Green Howards (an army regiment) landed ashore and marched around the Carolinas. Four battles they fought and four battles they won before being sent off to sunny Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The Yorkshire Green Howards were grand (great) with the bayonet and steady in the line.

The rest of it is more babble about how great Yorkshire is etc and why you'd do so well to hook up with a guy from there, and rambles on about the evil of banning slavery too for some reason.

As in my previous post, it roughly says "I am a total fucking knob"

While I have to agree with the general sentiment that the guy is a knob..I must say..it did make me laugh..and I have to somewhat admire him simply for how freaking long it must have taken him to do that..

Well he actually likes you BBBTBW so thats a start NO?

Most Brit posters will recognise that it is probably Geoffrey Boycott a retired cricketer who enjoyed hitting leather balls. with his well oiled bat.

stella40 -> RE: Translatable? (7/11/2007 11:12:00 AM)

I disagree with some of the posters here... it isn't Yorkshire.

I was born in Dewsbury which now lies in West Yorkshire, and apart from my pre-school years (spent in Glasgow) I grew up in Leeds and Bradford.

And yes, I speak with a Yorkshire accent, with flat vowels and that noticeable drawl (although there are Scottish elements as well, coming from having much of my family from Glasgow).

We pronounce 'time' just as anyone else would. There are other noticeable giveaways:

'wor' - meaning 'our', this is characteristic of the North East. A Yorkshire 'our' would be 'aar'.

'ashore' wouldn't be 'ashooar' but rather 'ashower'.

'Yorkshire' is actually 'Yorksheer', and not 'Yorksha'

In fact there's a bit of Geordie in this, a bit of Scots, but this is about as much Yorkshire dialect writing as I am Nigerian.

Unless it's someone from Yorkshire with really really bad spelling and grammar and some sort of speech impediment.
