ORIGINAL: chellekitty well...not on the question you asked but... NEVER buy a puppy from a pet store...generally they are of questionable breeding, they have food issues, and you just don't know what it will grow into...a sweet playful dachshund puppy can turn into a mean, biting, paranoid, dachshund with a bad back...and on top of that, at least around, here they charge a minimum of $200 more than the "breeders" they get them from...i say "breeders" because all to often they are from puppy mills... i love puppies and dogs, in fact i sometimes go to pet stores to get a little puppy therapy...but if i want a pet to take home i will go to a reputable breeder where i can see both parents and the (hopefully) full litter...and despite what the ACK would have you think, you can find a reputable breeder in the newspaper...look around...don't settle on the first dog you fall in puppy love with...and just like anything else you're entering into a 10 to 20 year relationship with don't ignore the red flags... Normally I am all about shelters and rescuing strays. I've looked into being a foster mother for them, but again I just don't have the situation at home for it. However, I've had such bad luck with dogs that I am willing looking everywhere for this next one. I have had two dogs and both were completely insane, to the point of being dangerous to anyone who wasn't family. We tried behavior classes, I worked with them constentely to try and elimate any factor that could be due to us. The first was a daschund who just had to be crated when anyone came over. The second was a springer spaniel who, it turns out, had spaniel rage and had to be put down. Because of this, I'm willing to look everywhere, including pet stores. But when it does come time to adopt, we will definately be checking the shelters too!
