AquaticSub -> Pets (not the human kind) (7/11/2007 2:48:24 PM)

Today Valyraen and I were at a pet store, taking a break from errands. I fell in love with a cute dachshund puppy and attempted to talk Valyraen into letting us adopt of him. Before anyone says it: I've been thinking of getting a dog for a long time so this is not "I want a dog because it's cute while it's a tiny puppy" but just that I really connected with this particular puppy.

Rightly so, he reminded me that our house is too small, we already have two cats and two degus and our house is just not puppy-proof. We agreed that while we both want a dog, and in particular a puppy since I've never gotten a chance to raise one, this just isn't the right time. He also said that when it is the right time, he will give me equal input on choosing the dog and the breed.

I'm curious as to how other d/s couples handle the issue of pets, both obtaining and taking care of them. Valyraen and I feel that since both people have to take care of the animal, it needs to be an animal that we will both enjoy taking care of. Neither of us are allowed to get an animal without consulting the other one and we are both responsible for all the well-being of all the animals in the house.

MstrssPassion -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/11/2007 2:56:08 PM)

question: whats a degus?

We have pets. I have a 14 yr old Rottweiler that I have had nearly her entire life. We have 2 ferrets & recently aquired 2 rats (one hairless, one standard)

We plan to get another dog after my big girl goes to doggie heaven but we have come to an impasse as to size/breed. For now we have set the conversation on the back burner. I assume when the time comes the right dog will find us as I plan to do a rescue (as I have done with all my dogs).

Right now the time isn't right for us... & as you stated, it isn't right for you either. Sometimes you just allow the right things happen at the right time for the right reasons.

AquaticSub -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/11/2007 2:58:55 PM)

Do a google image search. They are an Chilean rodent. The best way of discribing them is "Cute eyes, huge tushies". [:)]

MstrssPassion -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/11/2007 3:01:33 PM)

awwwww... those are cute, I want one.

Are their personalities like the chinchillas (they kinda look like them)

Well that is if you know what a chincilla is like.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/11/2007 3:01:49 PM)

Yay daschunds!!!

Mostly for us it's practical- we're not in a position right now to have any pets financially or responsibility wise.

BUT we both really want one.  The problem will be cat or dog? (I wouldn't be surprised if we got both) And then I want to name the daschund Poodle.  He doesn't like that.

I think it would be similar to any new responsibility added on- whether it's a house, or a car, or a youngin.  One person may have the authority, but everyone has to make it work and fit well and all aspects should be included.  One of the great things about my relationship is that it isn't authority based but love based.  So I can generally tell him that I'm not going to be a dog walker and only end up walking the dog when he's tired or busy.

chellekitty -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/11/2007 3:02:16 PM)

well...not on the question you asked but... NEVER buy a puppy from a pet store...generally they are of questionable breeding, they have food issues, and you just don't know what it will grow into...a sweet playful dachshund puppy can turn into a mean, biting, paranoid, dachshund with a bad back...and on top of that, at least around, here they charge a minimum of $200 more than the "breeders" they get them from...i say "breeders" because all to often they are from puppy mills...
i love puppies and dogs, in fact i sometimes go to pet stores to get a little puppy therapy...but if i want a pet to take home i will go to a reputable breeder where i can see both parents and the (hopefully) full litter...and despite what the ACK would have you think, you can find a reputable breeder in the newspaper...look around...don't settle on the first dog you fall in puppy love with...and just like anything else you're entering into a 10 to 20 year relationship with don't ignore the red flags...

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/11/2007 3:03:25 PM)

Oh and totally- whatever pet we get will be from a shelter, and I'm even ok with an older pet because I know those are harder to find owners for.

chellekitty -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/11/2007 3:06:08 PM)

shelter dogs (puppies not so sure about) are good too...they have an established personality and are usually already house trained and some other basic comands...if we could adopt adult dogs (the pack being what it is now, i can't) i would have way more dogs than i already do (5) from the shelter

uwinceismile -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/11/2007 3:06:29 PM)

rotties rock!!! i had 2 puppies ,they were brothers and lived 9 and 11 yrs.....
im unaware of any other dog breed :)   lol

MstrssPassion -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/11/2007 3:06:37 PM)

save a life
do a rescue

There are many others rescues outside of SPCA or local dog shelter (but those deserve a look as well) You can also do searches for breed rescues... I just saw a program on TV in the last week of a woman who is a Daschund breed rescuer.

Normally I am all about shelters and rescuing strays. I've looked into being a foster mother for them, but again I just don't have the situation at home for it. However, I've had such bad luck with dogs that I am willing looking everywhere for this next one. I have had two dogs and both were completely insane, to the point of being dangerous to anyone who wasn't family. We tried behavior classes, I worked with them constentely to try and elimate any factor that could be due to us.

The first was a daschund who just had to be crated when anyone came over. The second was a springer spaniel who, it turns out, had spaniel rage and had to be put down. Because of this, I'm willing to look everywhere, including pet stores. But when it does come time to adopt, we will definately be checking the shelters too!

Their personality seems to depend on their intelligence. We have one who is a darling and incredibly brave, along with smart as a whip. She figured out to get out of her rodent ball! The other is a bit cranky (bites a bit) and is very scared of the world.

i understand...within the past few years we've had to give a dog away to someone who didn't have a dog with major dominance issues...and we've had to put that dog with major dominance issues to sleep (he has always never accepted any dog older than a few months old to the point of attacking them and not releasing them when they submit...he had no off switch...then he became senile and started attacking established pack dogs...) and had to give back a puppy to the breeder because the dachshunds don't like other breeds of dogs...little snobby bastards..

but i have a new puppy..Mr Teddy Roosevelt...he's a brown and yellow dapple with no black and just a white blaze...i don't know how they got that color puppy but he's adorable...and full of energy...our two black and tans we bred ourselves (it was a case of we had 3 puppies live and after the ordeal we were all attached to them) and our silver dapple is my moms little touched dog...private breeder, not a puppy mill, but she has a badly shaped back, her legs are too long and she's mildly retarded and well, also a replacement for the black and tan's dam who died tragically (she crawled inside a comforter and choked on the stuffing...) so we accepted the things that weren't quite right...

we also have one ugly dashchund...a 115lb your-guess-is-as-good-as-mine who is my mom's service dog...btw you should check out the movie The Ugly Dashchund...

on the OT...i saw my ex get put in the hole majorly because he catered to his alpha girls whim which was an $800 puppy from the pet store because she had a connection with it...he had to get a pay day loan and she was used to living on means that he didn't have so he ended up in a huge financial downward spiral and he hated the dog...i think that if anyone is gonna get a dog they should at the very least consult with the people they live with...if there is an authority figure that is an ultimate descion maker...well its up to them to decide how they want to address the subject, in the house i am currently in, that person is my mom...she let me have a puppy when the house got to less than 5 dogs (the city limit) because i will bring one home anyway (it was how she got her service dog, i don't know what she's complaining about) and she wanted a say in the subject...

curvyslavegirl -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/11/2007 3:37:02 PM)

Deciding on pets in a D/s relationship tends to look like deciding on pets in any relationship...or at least it should be!
Everyone in the house who is going to end up caring for it should have a say. Hmm...that kinda works for human pets too now doesnt it...
Whose gonna clean up the crap tends to be a point of stress for just about every pet friendly household ;)

LaTigresse -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/11/2007 3:38:22 PM)

Well here is how it works in my house for whatever it's worth. I am the one that choses to have animals, I pick them, I take care of them. They are 100% my responsibility. Granted, being involved in animal behaviour and rehabilitating rescues I tend to take on alot. Most of my rescues are of the german shepherd variety. But then I understand them and am very comfortable working with them. Little dogs I fondly call bait ( I live near a river and no, I am never serious ) I just do not care for nervous little yappy dogs.

As far as pet stores........god forbid!!! IF you really want a purebred dog talk to your vet. Get the names of several reputable breeders and go visit their facility. Preferably they should have both parents on the property. Make sure you get a health guarantee of several generations and that the puppies have been properly socialized. Yes, you will pay a few more dollars. BUT if you are not willing to then you may as well go to the shelter.

Another good idea is to talk to the shelter, or go to petfinder.com and enter the breed you want. This will put you in contact with rescue organizations that deal specifically with that breed and can help you get an outstanding pet. These groups are on the whole just fantastic. Usually they have had the dogs thoroughly vet checked, have fostered them in a home and have a very good idea of what that dog is all about.

Most importantly, don't be suckered in by a cute face. Take into consideration the temperment of that specific breed. In all of my work with rescues I cannot count the number of times a dog has ended up at the shelter because the people did not like behaviour of the animal......an animal that was just doing what it was bred to do. I am sure you already know but just to underline for anyone that doesn't, breeds are more than just size and appearance, they are also temperment and purpose.

Your new puppy sounds so adorable! Good for you for accepting the other one. I was taught from a young age that pets are family, which is why we did our best with the dashchund. We just couldn't control the springer anymore. She was too dangerous.

Oh I loved The Ugly Dashchund when I was a kid! Thanks for reminding me of it, I will have to add it to my blockbuster.com list. It was so cute. [:)]

Ouch, it's sad that he ended up hating the dog. Don't have experience someone with buying an animal they can't afford, but I know a friend who bought a kitten with her boyfriend. The problem was their relationship was on the rocks then. They broke up pretty soon afterwards and she never got to see the kitten again. [:(]

SlND3R3LLA -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/11/2007 3:46:35 PM)

Master and I have four dogs and one and a half hamsters (long story).  I had three of the dogs when we got together, I feel very blessed to find a Master that no only welcomed me into his home, but three very spoiled mutts.  I got him the other one for his birthday this past year.  I would have more in a heartbeat if we lived in the country, but this is way more than enough for town.

It is taking so long to housebreak the pup, it's almost like a full-time job in itself.  Pets can be almost like children in the amount of care, attention, and money it costs to raise them.  I don't think that most people think about that in the beginning, they just see the cute face and fall in love.  I know some that have done that not too long ago, and the pup had to go to the shelter through no fault of it's own.

We talk about everything before we buy it, but more-so something that will add work to the home, and will strain on the finances.  Heck, I discussed and rescussed getting the hamsters last week since my little bunny died.  It doesn't seem like much, but it's still something else to care for and watch after.

I am glad you have decided it's not time yet.  Most just rush in and don't think about the future or the life the pup will have.  I am sure you will have the perfect situation in the future, and the perfect pup will come along and grab your heart.

I have two birds and two guinnea pigs which I had before I met Darcy.  He has been totally supportive and accepts that they are a part of me and so, are a part of his life also, (just like my children[;)])

But god Aqua - degus? - Hell they are overgrown gerbils and completely adorable and I sooooooooo want some! If I was single, I would have them already,  but I am being good and patient and will not take any on until Darcy says I may.

Peace

That's a nice policy. In our household, my wife tends to pick the animals, and i do all the taking-care-of. i did have some input in selecting the cats. The hedgehogs (all deceased now, she's had as many as four at one time), she just got even though after the first one i asked her not to.

Since we now live in a rural area, i'm trying really really hard to keep her away from miniature horses, goats, sheep, llamas, etc... though i know sooner or later i'm going to lose [&:]

ownedkitten -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/11/2007 4:09:09 PM)

Greetings Aqua,

Master and I have a puppy who is almost a year old.  We adopted her at about 3 months, from my exboyfriend.  It was a joint decision, although I think he kinda gave in when I said, "please?!?!?" in that tone that we're all familiar with.   We had been talking about adopting a pup for a long time, possibly fostering the neighbors dog when she deployed, but we fell in love with the little ball of fluff who curled up in my lap while we all chit-chatted.

Since I do not work outside the home, Daisy Mae is primarily my responsibility, as are most household type things.  However, Master does feed her from time to time and let her outside.  It's not like he's uninvolved with the dog completely.  He does get frustrated with her occasionally because she does view him as the alpha male and thus shows her submission (puddle) when he approaches her.  She is wary of him in some ways -  not as affectionate, outgoing, etc with him.

Grace & Fire,
caitriona
