A note of caution for everyone...my friend's employer just got the call none of us who embrace BDSM ever want to get - his lifepartner of 20 years was found, dead, in his home in Florida, chained to the wall with a metal chain wrapped around his throat...a session with a stranger that went horribly wrong.  The stranger did not call 911 or even try to resusitate the victim, according to the coroner.  Now, the family is desperately trying to cover up the truth of the autopsy to protect the parents and relatives.  My friend had to identify the body and he told me it was really horrible.

True, these things don't happen very often, but when they do it's a good time to reflect on safety and choices.

Let's be careful out there.

If the number of deaths claimed online were even remotely true, BDSM would surpass Alaskan crab fishing and coal mining as the most dangerous job in America.  I've gotten to the point that I believe it when I can read the accompanying news article and obituary.

Yeah, I'm cruel like that.

Ditto what Rover said.

BDSM deaths DO happen, yet, its usually acompinied by a news article or someone on the site who knew the person persoanlly and is reputable, no offence to the newcomer, but a first post that says that stuff, isn't the most convincing.

I appreciate your apprehension in believing such a story, but I saw my friend tonight after he returned from Florida where he had to identify the body yesterday and he's a mess...he's completely in shock!  Even though he's a seasoned New Yorker who's seen it all, these things always happen to other people, right?

PairOfDimes -> RE: the darkest side (7/12/2007 9:46:22 PM)

I'm sorry to hear about your acquaintance. That's a sad story.

SimplyMichael -> RE: the darkest side (7/12/2007 9:48:38 PM)

LOL,

Coroners LIVE off of the money paid by reporters for juicy stories like this, no way to keep it secret IF it was true and since it has stayed "secret"...

Lives in FL,  not one whiff of this in the news.

Well, i can speak from, experience, although thankfully i'm not dead! My estranged husband / Master made an attempt on my life after W/we split, nearly killing my chldren and myself in the process, in a very well thought out plan of attack. I met Him online and He was a charmer until the day we married, when His whole demeanour changed ( a classic excuse, but true) . Judge me if Y/you will but i am just happy to be alive .

For the disbelievers here is the link to the news article!

True or not, there are things like this that happen everyday and it does not take BDSM to have it happen.

So yes, know your partner and use your mind when deciding to 'play' with anyone.

I got a little confused by your posts...was it your friend or your friends employer that this happened to?

If your friend identified the body yesterday and if it is a police case then it may take a little longer than a day for the coroner to make a report - that is my understanding but things may be different where in the USA.

crouchingtigress -> RE: the darkest side (7/13/2007 3:54:52 AM)

bdsm life partners for 20 years are far and few between....i am sorry for your friends loss.

crouchingtigress -> RE: the darkest side (7/13/2007 4:22:28 AM)

wow, sorry quiz.....that is fucked up.....talk about using your powers (of greyskull) for evil rather then good.

i hope he is in jail a loooong time. glad you are safe.

You're softening.  I'd really expect you to want the forensic path's report and tox screen as well! LOL

KatyLied -> RE: the darkest side (7/13/2007 7:45:10 AM)

Link to the newspaper story about this death?

Otherwise I'm not believing a word of it.

I do know a girl who'd invited a Dom to her home for the weekend.
She'd lost about 60lbs in 4 months on a severe diet.
She fell over in a massive heart attack as they were dancing in the rain.
The man panicked, freaked, and left.
Only after he'd gotten back to his home state did he call a contact number he'd left at home.
They didn't find her for over 24hrs.
If he'd called 911 she may have lived.
That's about as close to playing with strangers potentially causing death I've experienced around me.

Jasmyn -> RE: the darkest side (7/13/2007 9:15:28 AM)

In the 80s in New Zealand a similar thing happened to a B&D client of a young woman who was by all accounts inexperienced with S&M but had set herself up as a dominatrix ... an older gent, she had left him alone and he had collapsed while tied up to a wall.  Thinking they had killed him, particularly because he was tied with a strap around his throat, the woman and her partner freaked and in their panic drove, what they thought was his dead body, a few hundred miles to dump it over some well known river falls, weighting the body with a block of concrete.  An autopsy later revealed he was alive throughout the ordeal, and his ultimate death was drowning.

I was only a teen when this story broke, but the whole thing fascinated me.  I've often thought how unbelievably sad the sorry situaton was.

BossyShoeBitch -> RE: the darkest side (7/13/2007 9:32:45 AM)

Lives in FL as well.  What part or city?  I haven't heard about it either...

MHOO314 -> RE: the darkest side (7/13/2007 9:43:37 AM)

Yep wandersalone, I am with you, I smell something rotten and its not a dead body--pretty odd for a first post and the facts are "floating".
