Arpig -> RE: What should America do? (7/15/2007 11:53:41 AM)

Maybe the US should do some sort of combination of both...seek closer ties (perhaps even some form of federation) with countries with similar values & outlooks (Canada, Australia, and the UK come to mind) and at the same time limiting its involvement with other countries to trade...as much as we need the arabs' oil, they need the west's manufacturing muscle.

The world seems to be headed towards creating large trading blocks along the lines of the EU, so it is likely in the US's interest to do the same, however I think it would be a mistake to simply base these on geographical proximity, let's face it Mexico is hardly in the same league as the US or Canada, and while freer access to its cheap labour would have benefits to certain sectors of the US economy, I hardly think it would be beneficial over all.

Do you see any reasons for not trading with another nation? Or should it be a "business is business" attitude? How does international aid come into play with this?

Arpig -> RE: What should America do? (7/15/2007 12:14:55 PM)

I would think that if the US was part of a major trading block (which would obviously be the strongest such block simply given US membership) then trading or not trading with other countries would likely be a much more powerful inducement to those other countries behaving in whatever manner the US (along with its block partners)deemed desirable. Foreign aid could also be tied to the actions of the recipient countries.
One never knows, but I suspect that over time more and more countries would see it to be in their self interest to seek closer ties to a US led trading block, leading towards a world government based on the general lines that are seen in the west as desirable (fair & open elections, stable political systems that are not based on coups, etc.)

I think what America should do is stop trying to be all things to all the world. If (as an American) you've traveled extensively as I have, you find that no matter how wonderful some places/ cultures/ peoples/ etc are, there's no place like home. I've not seen another country anywhere that I would consider living in. With all its faults, we still have the best system there is - and we should work on it, improve it, fix what's wrong, and serve as an example.

I think America should take the best of both sides and combine them as best as possible.  There is no one perfect "twue" answer so it's a trick question, lol.

Actually the answers are just each person's opinions, there is no right or wtong answer.

Interesting ideas, Arpig.

A "what if" scenario...... what if those who oppose the west decided to create their own block, with China and Russia in it, what would happen? As you say, our block would be strongest, so could we do without "them"?

Or would there be no chance of such happening? "Them" needing us too much, etc?

Do you believe we should be more isolationist, or perhaps just moderate how we interact with the rest of the world?

Lead by example, not by force.  If someone whats our help, let them ask.  We butt into other's business way to often just because we fear we might loose a buck.

Arpig -> RE: What should America do? (7/15/2007 12:42:25 PM)

Actually Level, I think your "what if" scenario is going to happen, China and Japan are getting more deeply entangled economically. The trading blocks are, in my opinion, inevitable, and I think it is in Canada and the US's best interest to create the strongest and most stable such "consortium" they can, before they end up isolated. It is our misfortune that our closest neighbours geographically are generally rather economically backwards, so we should ignore geography and seek out partners that will enhance our economic clout. With the fall of the USSR, even Russia is a potential partner...perhaps an Arctic block consisting of the US, Canada, & Russia (and just to be nice we could let in the Finns, Swedes, and Norwegians), or an Anglo block like I suggested in my first post...I am sure leaving the EU wouldn't be all that unpopular a policy in the UK.

Would we be better off including all of the EU? How about South Korea?

A random question: if all of this trade block talk came about, and if we found ourselves on the opposite side as China, and they called in their investments in the US, what would happen? This bothers me, it really does.

Arpig -> RE: What should America do? (7/15/2007 12:53:22 PM)

I didn't include the EU simp[ly because I don't see them wanting to be "dominated" by the US now that they have started down the road to a "United States of Europe" of sorts. And if the Chinese called in all their markers, well that would be tantamount to a declaration of economic war, so I guess we could just ignore them and seize their assets in return. I realise that I do not paint a pretty picture, what with 4-5 huge trading blocks competing with eachother in a cutthroat world market, but that is the way I see the world going.

NavyDDG54 -> RE: What should America do? (7/15/2007 12:59:21 PM)

The UN is a worthless and corrupt organization with no real power to get anything done. you have 5 countries all with veto power that are so completely opposite of each other(except the US and Britain) that the security council is useless.  And the UN is a racist, biased, and corrupt organization. without the balls to do what has to be done. They think that the terrorists will start behaving because the UN asked them to.
This is what America should do. Withdraw from the UN and NATO. Strengthen our alliances with key allies, UK, Israel, Germany, Japan, Australia, and Canada. While at the same time work as establish a new NATO, the North American Treaty Organization. Just the US, Canada, Mexico, and the various islands. Solidfy ourserlves. while at the same time continuing to take the battle in the war on terror overseas. we CANNOT afford to fight the war in America. The damage would be too great.  I would rather some other country get destroyed by the fighting that America. That may be callous and harsh, but I am an American. I would rather people that I dont know die, then my friends and family.
We need to counter the EU. that is where my new "NATO" comes in. We need to strengthen the North American economies. One way to do that is so further solidy our alliance with Japan.  The US cannot sit idly by, we NEED to go Global. We are the most powerful and influential country on the planet, but we dont use the full scope of our power and influence. We need to. America needs to become united at home. Debate in politics is good. But not when it's done down party lines. When the libs refuse to consider anything that Bush says and vice versa we are not functioning. We have to be able compromise. And we need to use our power and our influence to further our own interests.  America flourished the most when we didnt give a damn what Europe thought. We did what we wanted, when we wanted, how we wanted. And America propsered.  Since we started catering to the liberal whining coming out of Europe we started downward.  We need to become America again. The exotic land of the free, the name that strikes fear into our enemies, and keeps new ones from popping up.
