Yeah, this is what I had in mind:

"The Associated Press reported that after consulting with the Falcons, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and top league officials agreed Wednesday to let Vick play as the legal process determines the facts.

A person with knowledge of the meeting, who requested anonymity so the case would not be influenced, said the NFL would stick to that position for the foreseeable future, despite its new personal conduct policy, the AP reported." (Click for full story.)

I don't think the NFL has made any final decisions about this, but for now they seem content to wait till there's a verdict.

As you know I am a huge NFL fan, but I think they will take a good amount of heat for this fence sitting crap. And rightfully so.

At one time I was in a nurses union and management had every right to "suspend, pending investigation" when a nurse was accused of abuse, drug diversion etc. Basically: a crime. I am no expert, but I think the players union would be just fine with that call from management.

I hate to play the position card, but if he were not the qb, think things might be a bit different and we'd already have seen a suspension?

Atlanta (unfortunately) gets the trifecta (in reference to Barry Bonds+Chris Benoit+Michael Vick):

"This," McCloskey said, "is bigger than Ray Lewis."

LOL @ position card. I keep wondering " what is Pacman thinking about now ". No love for the Pacman, but you have to wonder about it.

The game is on ! I just heard on ESPN that PETA will be picketing NFL headquarters this starting this Friday < tomorrow>. PETA is not the group I would chose to spearhead the protesting, too over the top to be credible in most people eyes. But this is so publicized I think if Al Queda protested it would be well recieved.

As a major animal advocate and rescuer, I find the stories about Michael Vick completely disgusting, although his is not, by any means, an isolated case. However, if anything good could possibly come from this, perhaps elevating the cruelty of dogfighting rings to the American public would be it.

What I find most amazing on some of the blogs I've read (most notably the blog on the Falcons website), is how people keep saying, "Let him play until he's proven guilty." And apparently, judging from Goodell's action (or INaction, as the case may be), the NFL agrees. And yet, what disturbs me perhaps the most about the NFL's stance is that they don't seem to be considering the status of today's athletes as icons and role models. Americans pay big bucks to attend the games, we buy the magazines that feature our favorite athletes, we buy the jerseys with our favorite player's number, and we buy the products that they are paid millions to endorse. These are all in support of a person that we look up to.

Now consider if Michael Vick were a teacher, or a policeman, or a minister, or any other public figure whose profession is one in which higher standards are placed. Would that teacher, policeman, or minister be left to continue his or her work while the court system decided his guilt or innocence? Hardly. By being a public figure -- a role model -- Michael Vick should be suspended simply because the mere suspicion of wrongdoing places a negative slant on his profession, his team, and the NFL as a whole. Is it fair? Maybe not. But tell that to the other working Joes who are suspended from their jobs while their legal fates are being determined. I doubt you'd find much sympathy there.

Just my .02.

Also being an animal lover, protector and advocate, the news of this literally sickens me. I also wonder how any human being could gain pleasure of watching and partaking in such replusive behaviors and go to sleep at night.
Also, relishing or being pissed on how much money was won or lost, without any thought of the these poor animals, in fact showing their disgust by shooting the losers[>:]. It is the most disgusting form of gambling and "sport" I can think of. Then there are Cock fights, dog and horse racing, torturing of lab animals, fucked up animal breeders and I happen to add to that list hunting and fishing.

I agree with you bama, this will give an inside look into the deplorable things human-beings are capable of, I also hope this story sheds the light that this is not as uncommon as one might think and that many more awful things are happening to innocent animals all the time in this country and the world.

I hope if Vick is convicted that he gets the stiffest penalty possible and that he will have to rub elbows with all the animal loving lifer's where ever he is sent to do his time!  Molesters, serial killers, murderer's of children don't fair well in prison, and at times lose their lives in prison to a lifer and I sense this behavior would be looked upon by some as just as bad. I have to say I would feel no pity for his fate if anything were to happen to him or anyone connected to this scandal. I would hope they "chew" him a new asshole, to bad it couldn't be one of his dogs that could do the chewing[:@]!

I'm looking forward to the protest posters that will be flying around training camp.

They'll probably be asked to leave, just like what happened to people who wore Ron Mexico jerseys to Falcons games.

One thing I have to wonder about is why the major sports are making more money than ever before.  With all the thuggery, I don't even watch basketball anymore, and I haven't felt the urge to go to a (major-league) baseball game since all the steroid revelations.  I know I'm not the only sports fan who feels this way about these things, and yet salaries keep going up and up; from what I understand, it's never been a better time to own a sports franchise.

From what I remember, I heard somewhere that mixed martial arts is actually taking away from major ball sports, and I'm certain that the ridiculous salaries paid to the ball sports athletes and their self-entitled attitudes contribute to the public's further disillusionment.

MTV and other youth-targetting media that help glamorize the rap/thug culture may help ensure the future of the thugginess in pro ball sports.

Unfortunately, we all know what's gonna happen here.  Michael Vick has the resources to buy justice in America today.  He won't serve a minute of real jail time, and he'll go on to "write" a book about his experience that will make him several million dollars.  Also, think about the bidding war on the movie rights that will occur once the various network TV stations decide to make made-for-TV movies about this asshole?

He'll also learn to move his dogfighting cartel deeper underground and/or to jurisdictions (like Mexico, perhaps) that will allow him to keep doing what he wants.

I don't know if he's still going to play pro football, but I bet that will be more his choice/call than not.  He may want to skip all the hassle, or he might just stick it out, figuring that people like Ray Lewis can literally get away with murder and make people forget.

In the end, he'll actually generate even more money from his infamy and crimes.  Sad to say, but that's the world we live in.

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: michael vick indicted (7/20/2007 2:11:58 PM)

this was the results on a poll done by an atlanta tv station as of 510 pm today......i voted for #1

Should Arthur Blank take immediate action against Michael Vick?

Poll Results:

Yes, release him from the team and close this chapter in Falcon history.

47.75%

Yes, suspend him. This is too much of a distraction to the team.

24.22%

No, let the legal process take its course.

20.24%

No, I think the way he's handling it is fine.

7.79%

Lordandmaster -> RE: michael vick indicted (7/20/2007 2:40:10 PM)

I kinda doubt that, but we'll see.  The conviction rate for federal charges like this is somewhere around 95%, and the defendants are often more powerful than Michael Vick.

anybody that would hurt a woman, man, child or animal is a low life in my book and deserves to be brought up on the toughest charges available. In a lot of states, jurisdictions, the charges aren't hard enough in my own humble opinion....

ocilla -> RE: Michael Vick indicted (7/21/2007 12:18:54 AM)

They reports of the dog killing and torture are so specific, gut instinct says it is true and that he was an active participant and leader even.  This behavior is no different than a serial killer in my opinion....
My family has been here in Georgia for as far back as we can trace - pre revolutionary war....so I feel that I have a pretty good perspective of Southern mentality and community vibe.  The overwhelming response that I hear from folks here in Georgia and ATL is that they are sickened by the reports of how the animals were treated and that it would be impossible to remain a fan if Blank were to keep Vick on - most feel that he should not get a paid leave but a suspension till the trial is over.   I have friends in the pro athlete world and even there the response (regardless of race) is that Vick is a sick, stupid, idiot.  One friend said that the pro athlete creed is that the hanger's on or entourage is supposed to keep the bread winner clean at all costs (and there are usually many folks who get there meal ticket from the athlete).  The entourage's job in part is to create a buffer and keep the breadwinner in top shape mentally, legally, emotionally, personally, physically and professionally focused and in tip top earning form.  A buffer is often created if there is a "problem or behavior" issue so that folks other than the athlete/breadwinner will "take the fall" keeping the earning potential safe and secure.  They say that it is very unusual and telling that Vick's entourage is turning on him. There is a general vibe that his seemingly uncontrollable drive to torture and kill these dogs means he is truly a disgusting sick person.

But it does feel as if Blank and the NFL are going to punt on this.  And ther is potential for it to become a racially charged issue -  time will tell.
