Estring -> Barry Bonds: Yay Or Nay? (7/19/2007 9:27:13 PM)

It looks like a new all time home run leader will emerge in a
few days. I want to get excited about it, but it is not easy. There is no doubt that Barry Bonds is a tremendous athlete. It is quite possible that he would have broken the home run record without his steroid use, but the problem is, we will never know. Although oficially there will not be an asterisk next to his name, in many people's mind there is one. I think it is possible that the all time home run king may not be elected to the hall of fame on the first ballot. How sad is that? His being a big jerk doesn't help either.
It will be many years, if at all, before the taint of steroids in baseball disappears. McGwire, Sosa, Clemens, to name a few, have all been tainted. I guess we will have to wait until Alex Rodriguez breaks the record before we can celebrate. I just hope he doesn't do it as a Yankee.[;)]

I ASSUME A-Rod never took any substances, but at this point, who the hell knows?

Estring -> RE: Barry Bonds: Yay Or Nay? (7/19/2007 9:38:12 PM)

Yeah, he hasn't been accused of that yet.

ElectraGlide -> RE: Barry Bonds: Yay Or Nay? (7/19/2007 10:52:51 PM)

The joke is, he was a Hall of Famer, before he started that steroid crap. He could of most likely of beat the record without the roids. Ken Griffey Jr. had a good shot, but he got injured a few times for a long time. Sammy Sosa is back in action, hitting some homers.

Estring -> RE: Barry Bonds: Yay Or Nay? (7/19/2007 10:59:41 PM)

That is the irony. He was a hall of famer without the 'roids. I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't a first ballot hall of famer now.

domiguy -> RE: Barry Bonds: Yay Or Nay? (7/19/2007 11:13:43 PM)

I don't believe that he will be a first timer...I think that they will make him wait in an effort to show their dissaproval....Also the guy is just one major, first class, cock sucker.

DomKen -> RE: Barry Bonds: Yay Or Nay? (7/19/2007 11:13:58 PM)

Barry Bonds was not likely to have hit 756 without roids. Look at his early career umbers and he just wasn't averaging enough homers per season.

I have never wanted any player to have a career ending injury until now.

Estring -> RE: Barry Bonds: Yay Or Nay? (7/19/2007 11:22:09 PM)

Mark McGwire got just 23% of the vote in his first try, and he is much more of a press favorite. I agree Barry will have to wait.

Is everbody trying to say, that they do not like Barry Bonds as much as he likes himself ?

He was an excellent player Before Steroids (BS), but there is no way on earth I can respect a user the same way I can a natural.

He's a douchebag.

no one could ever hope to like BB as much as he likes himself

LotusSong -> RE: Barry Bonds: Yay Or Nay? (7/20/2007 9:04:42 AM)

I have a solution:

Pinpoint the time frame Bonds was "allegedly" on steroids then delete the number of HR's he had during that time and have him meet the record then.

njjohnny2007 -> RE: Barry Bonds: Yay Or Nay? (7/20/2007 9:13:51 AM)

maybe he whouldnt have broken the record but if you look at his stats before the roids he had over 500 homeruns and 3 mvp awards. The same of it is he was already a hall of famer at that point if he never played again. Wartch out for ken griffey at 587homers and 2500+ hits another sure hall of famer.

ManInTheBox -> RE: Barry Bonds: Yay Or Nay? (7/20/2007 9:42:58 AM)

Bonds is a Douche. If there wasn't the walkout in the 90s the year Griffey JR was hot he would have the record right now

Lordandmaster -> RE: Barry Bonds: Yay Or Nay? (7/20/2007 10:09:10 AM)

Yes, he already had 3 MVP awards, and yes, he was a sure Hall of Famer.  But 500 HR's?  I don't follow the math.  He started taking steroids in early 1999, right after the '98 season, when he thought he had a glorious year, and everyone was talking about McGwire and Sosa.  This has been well-documented.  It's what he told Ken Griffey, Jr., who thought he was making a mistake.  And after 1998, Bonds had 411 HR's.  I'm sure he'd still have over 500 HR'S NOW, but he didn't have anywhere near 500 then.

(It explains why he missed so many games in 1999, by the way: he wasn't used to the steroids yet, and kept injuring himself overtraining.)

The Giants start a homestand on Monday. It would be best that he break the record at home. At least the fans in 'Frisco will probably go crazy. They come down here to LA after that, and you know we won't be cheering him here.

If it happens in LA, will they throw the ball back? [:D]

Boy that would be a tough one. That ball will be worth plenty. It will be interesting if he breaks it in Milwaukee. They might boo even more than LA would.

It'll be worth a lot, for sure, and each one after that, too, in the hopes of it being "the last".

I watched Bonds do an interview this morning, he was actually a bit choked up as he talked about how all of this is "finally real" to him.
