ORIGINAL: 1wildwolf I also think that what Najakcharmer says about the furry community could also be applied to some people I have seen in the bdsm community, it is sadly human nature at times, whatever group they may be in. Well, yes and no. I've been actively involved in both the furry and BDSM communities, attending many events and gatherings, for a period spanning about twenty years and a fair chunk of geography in the United States. I think I have a reasonably broad perspective on both the good and positive stuff and the fucked-up and negative stuff that goes on in both communities. The furry community is very largely fucked up and socially dysfunctional. I wish it wasn't true, especially since I'd qualify by most definitions as a furry myself. But for whatever reason, the furry community attracts an extremely high proportion of individuals with extremely poor social skills and general life coping skills. Their behavior is appalling, and since they're actually in the majority, that behavior is considered the norm and not just tolerated but encouraged. There is a smaller contingent of mature and responsible furs who do a lot of babysitting for the non-socially-adept so that they don't create too many horrible disasters at events (eg, fursuit fucking in the hotel lobby or other public areas). At furry events where the babysitting isn't present in force, I guarantee that there will be such disasters, and I have personally seen many of them. It's not that *I* mind watching guys in fursuits give each other hand jobs, blow jobs or humping each other's suits. Me likey! But for fuck's sake, let's PLEASE not do it in the public areas of a convention hotel. You can go do it in your room. Heck, you can do it in MY room. Just please get the boundaries clear between a consenting audience and freaked out Japanese businessmen walking in on a guy in a deer suit being humped by a guy in a Skiltaire suit, resulting in the loss of the convention's ability to use that hotel. Let's also not climb up on the stuffed moose and fuck it, and take pictures to post on the event's official website, also resulting in furs being banned from renting there. Sex in the elevator that leaves spooge on the walls is just never a good idea. Bondage and flogging likewise, not when the elevator is being shared by people who are not part of the convention, including families and um's. Yeah. I could go on, and on, and on, but I think most folks get the picture. There's been a substantial backlash in the furry community ("Burned Furs") encouraging G-rated safe spaces for people in the fandom where such behavior is not tolerated, and maybe eventually they'll get somewhere. I didn't see too much outrageousness at FWA, and I hear the atmosphere at AnthroCon has much improved thanks to Uncle Kage and other responsible adults who can successfully ride herd on the idiots who would otherwise ruin the event. So maybe things really are getting better. I hope so, but at this point I'm just too busy with my life and also a bit too burned and wary from past bad experiences to be very active in the fandom any more.
