Mercnbeth -> Nipple Bigotry (7/24/2007 1:23:04 PM)

beth's starting a crusade against the prejudice and bigotry regarding female nipples. Here in the South Bay, topless males are common. Not all of them should be, and not all of them have breasts smaller than beth's. Yet while its required that she confine and cover hers, males of the species enjoy the freedom and comfort of going sans covering.

To address this inequity she's currently working on a project to develop flesh colored, realistic looking  'pasties' to cover them. Once they've gone from the drawing board to production, she intends to and start strolling down the beaches of the South Bay, with her nipples covered, albeit with nipple-like coverings .

The thing that put her over the top, was last weekend we were watching a show on the Logo channel about people identifying themselves as "gender queer". The definition given for the term was that they didn't want to change their gender but wanted to have the appearance of the gender they were not. The couples, who were part of the documentary, were same sex partners who took on characteristics of the opposite gender. One of the examples they followed for the story was a lesbian couple where one partner wanted to look male as much as possible, short of going through genital reconstruction surgery. However she did go through a breast removal procedure.

I know - it was a long build up but this is how it ties in to beth's protest...

Prior to the operation, during the doctor's examination and discussion of the procedure, the Logo channel pixelated the nipples. After the surgery the same person's chest was shown, now scarred, complete with nipples, with no pixelation. From the waist down, and the neck up, it was the same person. For some reason, those few inches of darker, or in beth's case pinker, skin are "bad" to show and display when they appear female and "good" to display when they appear male.

The law says female nipples must be covered. beth plans to cover them, with 'clothing' that exactly resembles what is required to be covered. What do you say? Any others want to be "out front" on this protest march?

Aileen68 -> RE: Nipple Bigotry (7/24/2007 1:31:04 PM)

Have beth do nipple covers that look like nipples.  Kind of like those cooking aprons where it looks like a nude female body.  It wouldn't be illegal and she could pretend to be Italian for a few inches of her body.  8)

caitlyn -> RE: Nipple Bigotry (7/24/2007 1:31:27 PM)

Well, I'll take a pass on the march ... mostly due to being a little short in some areas.

But ... I do think Beth should submit a U-Tube question on breast coverup, to the next Republican debate.

nyrisa -> RE: Nipple Bigotry (7/24/2007 1:40:15 PM)

I can't say how it is for other areas, but in Florida a woman can't be charged with indecent exposure while breastfeeding a baby in public. Even if the nipple is visible to others. Even if the nipple of the other breast, currently not in use by the baby, is in plain view. Now, why the nipple is considered indecent until the baby gets hungry, and then acceptable, then becomes indecent again once the baby is full, kind of leaves me puzzled.

When discussing the law, it is important to understand the theoritical basis of it.  I believe that the law's spirit is, "Sexual parts of a person's body must be covered."  I do not believe the spirit is, "Male genitals need to be covered, and female genitals and breasts must be covered."

Simply, the law wants people to cover up sexual organs.  Now, if you agree with this idea or not, that's another bit.  Personally, I wouldn't be upset to see nudity legalized (although I do question myself when it comes to the morbidly obese and elderly, though I figure I'd get over it after a while).

brightspot -> RE: Nipple Bigotry (7/24/2007 1:54:08 PM)

I think it's a great idea!
You go girl!
I think that there are fake nipples you can buy that women wear under their bra's to make their nipples look hard and perky. Those might work.

Missy.

(A side note; this makes me laugh when I am watching LOGO, when they do the promo commercials for "Boy's Gone Wild", these guy's were I suspect under the impression that these would be advertised and that girls(women?) would buy the video's and gawk at these young guys...Surprise, you know it is meant for the gay guys to purchase and I wonder the shock when these "jocks" find out the real purpose of the making of the videos[:D]. I mean how dumb can these young guys be to actually think the female gender would be interested in purchasing such crap[8|].)

bignipples2share -> RE: Nipple Bigotry (7/24/2007 2:01:00 PM)

Do you think anyone would mind if they're hanging down to their knees? Maybe I could get matching knee pasties. j/k
Well I think it's a great idea and long overdue. I believe if a woman chooses to be topless then they should be allowed to do so, just like men able to.
I'll have to also take a pass on march. I have this aversion to rotten tomatoes being thrown in my direction. LOL

Beth doesn`t need to cover up,she`s got a guy to do that for her..... ; )

Arpig -> RE: Nipple Bigotry (7/24/2007 2:07:21 PM)

a great idea, however don't plan on many sales here in Canada...we settled the topless issue a few years back, and nipples are ok up here

I support all attempts to de-Satanise (desanytise!) the female body: stuff like that makes me feel like a victim of chauvinism, bigotry and rampant hypocrisy. Especially with the current pornographic climate: it pisses me off. Good luck.

Lashra -> RE: Nipple Bigotry (7/24/2007 2:23:35 PM)

FREE THE NIPPLES!

I agree with beth. I'm kinda tired of looking at hairy man breasts that are sometimes bigger than my own![&:]  If I have to cover up my pinkies then why shouldn't Mister Hairyboobmanjogger? I work with construction workers ALL day nearly everyday. If the guys who work for me can take off their shirts, why the hell can't I?

If these things catch on I request some be made with fake nipple rings...because I like them but HELL no I won't have it done. [:)]

Hell I'd be all for it - maybe beth could send some to the UK and I can take it international! lol

Mercnbeth -> RE: Nipple Bigotry (7/24/2007 2:38:38 PM)

Thanks for the support thus far. Hypocrisy is all around us. We buy it from our politicians and go out of our way to rationalize it if its spoken by people and political parties that we identify. The hell with that!

I'm an aggressive advocate of identifying and exposing hypocrisy regardless of its source. Trust me - beth is VERY serious regarding this issue. To us, there is no difference in the hypocrisy of gender specific laws of this nation and the situation described in this story:
quote:

A female police officer deployed in Tehran's latest moral crackdown tells a woman that her manto (overcoat) is too short and infringes Iranian Islamic dress rules. "Azizam (my dear), good afternoon, if possible could we have a friendly chat, please allow us to have a small chat," the officer, a graduate of Tehran's police academy, tells the young woman. "My dear there is a problem with your manto. Please do not wear this kind of manto. Please wear a longer manto from now on." Some are just let go there, but others are escorted to waiting minibuses with dark black tinted window panes and labeled "Guidance Patrol." A girl in a short white manto whose long hair was tumbling out the front of her headscarf is taken by the police to one of the minibuses on Vanak Square in central Tehran -- an unexpected and unhappy end to her shopping trip. Another arrested woman is already inside the bus. She begins to cry. "I promise, I promise!" And the minibus doors slam shut.

The enforcement of morality is wrong. There are many who would use this example of the repression of woman in Iran as a reason for war. Yet those same people would be the first to call the police and have beth arrested, if her and I walked the beach of Redondo dressed exactly the same.

btw - if we were both only wearing bikini bottoms - I should be the one arrested for "indecent exposure".

BSB,
We'll expect you down here for the march wearing them and when the patent is filed you'll get joint credit. We'll also name the strawberry shaped (and flavored!??) after you. Stay tuned...

PS - Tony Bennett is a nice touch.

this got me wondering about the Equal Rights Ammendment and whether it would cover this situation. here's what i found:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_Rights_Amendment

The text of the Equal Rights Amendment, as proposed to the state legislatures in 1972 by the 92nd Congress, with a seven-year deadline for ratification, and as published in Volume 86, United States Statutes At Large (pages 1523-1524), reads as follows:

Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.

As an advocate of equality, I commend beth's stance. I have voiced similar sentiments in the past.

And as a lover of women's breasts.... well, lets just leave it at the equality issue.

Free the nipples!!

CuriousLord -> RE: Nipple Bigotry (7/24/2007 4:12:19 PM)

The intelligent argument:  Currently, it is illegal for sexual organs to be exposed in public.  This causes more responsibility for females.  Should this be modified to from "sexual organs" to "genitial regions"?

The common argument:  BOOBS!  Boobs boobs boobs boobies BOOBS!!!!!!
