In Venezuela, Speak No Ill of Hugo

Many foreigners can travel to Venezuela without a visa. But now there's a new requirement once they get there. President Hugo Chavez announced on Sunday that foreigners who publicly criticize his government will be deported. He ordered officials to monitor statements made by international figures visiting the country. The comments came after the President of Mexico's ruling conservative party criticized Chavez for seeking to do away with term limits at a recent pro-democracy conference in Caracas. "No foreigner, whoever it is, can come here to attack us," Chavez said. "How long are we going to allow a person, from any country in the world, to come to our own house to say there's a dictatorship here, that the President is a tyrant, and no one does anything about it?"

the people of venezula voted for him, so if they want him then foreigners really have no right to interfere in their internal affairs

well he is taking the money from the oil he has and sending back to poor villages

why is it that every country america has a problem with, that country also seems to have oil? hmmmm

The best cure for those thinking Bush is a dictator would be to live in N. Korea, China, or Tom Delay's house.

I'm not sure I'd classify Chavez as a dictator yet, but he's giving it a good go.

severin, I'd agree that Bush and his dipstick advisors have made some bad moves. It pays to be vigilant. The ID card thing truly bugs me.

Agreed, and the U.S. govt. needs to stop granting "Asylum" and "Refugee" status to Venezuelan Nationals like they are currently doing.

Chavez's recent political moves are shocking and dangerous. I really think leftists need to stop apologizing for him. Just because he stands up to Bush doesn't mean he's a good guy.

        Man I love the extreme left. You can't talk about Ward Churchill being an academic fraud and hack because he says extreme things about the US and we can't call an evil dictator (or a potential one) that because his country has oil.

      Next somebody is gonna tell me I can't complain about the welfare trash moving in and destroying my neighborhood because they are members of a minority group... Wait... never mind, too late.

       I guess Chavez will expect to be denied entry to the US because of what he said at the UN last time. Or am I setting my hopes a bit high?

I am curious as to just why what folks do in Venezuela is any of our business? If you piss of the government in this country you get a one way ticket to the gulag at Guantanamo.

Just what are we to try and understand? That the U.S. supports dictators of the right but for some reason dictators of the left are bad?
Tell me again why you care about who rules Venezuela and how they might choose to do it. If I remember correctly he was elected to be their president and when the U.S. sponsored a coup to overthrow him the people rose up and reinstated him. The coup plotters ran to the U.S. and bush & co. refuse to extradite those folks to stand trial in Venezuela.
