ORIGINAL: Mikal The way I see it, the death penalty is not a punishment - it's a survival technique for the masses. A threat is being removed, that can not be removed any other way (rehab, etc). Some people are simply too dangerous to let live. Sounds a lot like how the US is coming to be perceived by an alarming number of people, even in the West. And the most effective implementation of this survival technique, is to do profiling, then cull the riskiest segment of the population at regular intervals, say we trim off the top 2% or so, just to be sure. For the sake of minimizing risk, we can abort foetuses which will be born into a background that predisposes them to be a risk, or who have genetics that predispose them to be a risk. Those who are already serving time can be shot in their cells and dumped in the garbage, just to get a clean slate and eliminate a major tax expense that can be funneled back into law enforcement and healthcare. Somehow, I doubt most people would go for that, even if it carries this argument to its entirely logical conclusion and will undoubtedly go a long way toward culling risks to the society at large. The more extreme, but still logical, conclusion to this argument was succinctly put in Aliens: "Nuke them all from orbit, it's the only way to be sure"...
