Since I started reading posts, I have seen the '/' used.  Some uses I have seen are 'D/s' and 'W/we'.  I'm rather confused on the meaning of these terms, and why they are expressed in that manner.  If someone can shine some light on this I would much appreciate it.

It's a way of maintaining the uppercase for dominants and masters and lowercase for subs and slaves while still using the words "we" and "us". "D/s" stands for dominant and submissive. Some people can't imagine typing without the slash, for some of us it's like nails on a chalkboard.

What do you mean by not using the slash?  I got a little lost on that part.

Ok. Some people in the BDSM community feel that the words dominant, master, mistress, sir, etc., should always get a capital letter. Others also feel that all pronouns regarding a dominant/master/mistress/so on also get a capital letter and that submissive/slave/slut/etc never get a capital letter, nor do the pronouns that apply to any sub/slave/etc. Therefore, those who subscribe to this way of writing, when speaking of themselves as a couple will say "W/we" instead of simply "we" to give respect to the dominant half while still maintaining the proper lowercase for the submissive half.

Obviously, this isn't something my dominant and I buy into but some people do.

You know. . .I have always been lost at the point of W/we so I am glad you asked.

I really don't care for the D/s W/we personally. I will use the D/s and a few other traditional things out of respect for the community, but it holds no real meaning for me. Giving respect to the people who have lived this way for a lot longer than I have or even longer than I have lived is something I do believe in.

A little off topic but a similar note. Now I say all that about respect I will probably piss some people off with this next part. My sub only calls me by a title. She refers to no one else as "Master" or "Sir" or any derivative thereof. Nor will I allow there subs to call me by those titles. First off I didn't earn the respect of there sub, just because I am a Dom, or because I have a sub. For all they know I might have just walked in and declared myself something I am not. Why should I get a title I have not earned from each person. On the other side of that, I have earned it from my lady. No one else has. She is a strong free willed person, and unless you earn her respect, and she chooses to call you by your preferred title, I will not make her.

I personally do NOT use the slash, why you ask because, no matter the station that the person identifies with, they are still a person. I know that alot of the "online lifestylers" that have kittens because I don't do the W/we things, but I ask you... How do you pronounce W/we, Y/you, U/us and any of the other words in a non phenitic way. Thats right it can't be done... with all respect to everyone and their identification within the lifestyle, in real time, 90% of lifestylers, are just Mike or Joe, Sandy or Debbie, and only the bottoms in service to a Top usually uses the term sir, ma'am, mistress, master ect. Unless the person introduces themselves as MasterMetal and thats what the person uses as their scene name.

thats my 16 cents (inflation is awful)

Mike

On a humorous note....the fist few times i saw this slash speak term   Dom/me   I wondered....why do they need to put "me" on the end of it...i know they are the dominant part of the equation!

i dont use capitalization much cause i have nerve damage and i cant always tell where my fingers are on the keyboard.  *g*

Sir does.  he doesnt like that i dont, but on the other hand he understands i have problems.

D/s makes sense to me in that context....i will say Sir or Ma'am out of respect for the individual but those people are not *my* dominant.  that position in my heart belongs to Sir and Sir alone.

I just use the D/s to stand for dom and sub, or M/s to stand for master and slave relationships.  I don't normally use a capital when referring to anyone but my own, nor do I do the W/we thing..that gets annoying and I can't even read something when they do that.

It is because we are not "real and true" if we do not capitalize and use the stupidass slashy thingies!!!

"Real and true" being only an internet thing because, after all, what how does one pronounce a capital letter or a /???

The slashy bullshit being right up there on my annoyance scale next to the Wwe thing. I generally ignore all those using both. I don't need the acid increase in my stomach.

wow, no need to sugarcoat it

I agree with you 100%, but I will admit to doing it for a while. I will now cap the pronoun if I am only refering to Doms and if I feel like it. I usualy cap Dom or Domme. that's just the way I do it, everyone has their own way, and noone is realy wrong here, but that W/we shit does get annoying

Thanks for the assurance that I'm not the only one that doesn't care for this. I have a hard enough time figuring out all the abbreviations. I used to feel the same way about smiley faces but have been using them. I suppose it does help when you can't look into someone's eyes and can only rely on text to see what the writer is saying. I'm sure you have all covered 3rd speech so won't get into that.

Again, it's a degreadation of the english language. No where in the "Elements of Style" will you find this sort of internet bullshit. I try to stay away from it as much as possible, but as others have noted, you get jumped on by people if you don't play their game. Strange how some people will resort to these sorts of off the wall contractions, and three letter acronyms,  "just to save keystrokes." Then they end up spending an even greater effort sending out emails to the uninitiated, explaining what each of the shortcuts mean. If you really are such a lousy typist that you can't be bothered to write something out clearly in the first place, then perhaps you should march right down to your local media outlet, and plunk down $10 on some software that will teach you how.

You took the italicised words out of my mouth.  I really don't like to be called Mistress until I've earned it with someone and tell them so when we meet.  It is amazing how "freaked out" people are to simply call me Donna.  I am ok with Ms. or Miss simply because that doesn't hold meaning for me and let's the slave feel a bit better when chatting at first...whatever *S*
