Basically, capitals and the slash are online chat protocols.  I guess you have to have a real need (read hang up) about protocols to need the slash thing. They make me blind these days, although I have to admit when I was still new to it all, I did the slash deal.  Guess I've grown past it now, yay me!

Again, it's a degreadation of the english language. No where in the "Elements of Style" will you find this sort of internet bullshit. I try to stay away from it as much as possible, but as others have noted, you get jumped on by people if you don't play their game. Strange how some people will resort to these sorts of off the wall contractions, and three letter acronyms,  "just to save keystrokes." Then they end up spending an even greater effort sending out emails to the uninitiated, explaining what each of the shortcuts mean. If you really are such a lousy typist that you can't be bothered to write something out clearly in the first place, then perhaps you should march right down to your local media outlet, and plunk down $10 on some software that will teach you how.

On a humorous note....the fist few times i saw this slash speak term   Dom/me   I wondered....why do they need to put "me" on the end of it...i know they are the dominant part of the equation!

nitephire -> RE: Use of the '/' (8/5/2007 8:08:40 AM)

Thanks everyone for the input.  It cleared up quite a bit.  Maybe now I can read through posts a little faster.  Although I still have to look up a lot of things.

Cheers.

I identify as a bottom. Recently, I was at a conference where I got dinged by someone because I capitalized my name on my badge. Yes, the whole uppercase/lowercase thing annoys me in the extreme.

I'm no fan of W/we, etc, but what do Strunk and White recommend about 'D/s'?  We could write it out ('Dominance and Submission') every time, but then we would, for the sake of consistency, have to write out Digital Video Disk and Air Condition and the United States of America every time, too.  I will point out that Americans, at least, have been enamored of abbreviations and acronyms long before the internet, or even computers. 'D/s' seems like a perfectly acceptable abbreviation to me.

Joseff -> RE: Use of the '/' (8/5/2007 11:11:59 AM)

Although my writing skills have degraded a little over the lase few years, I've always been a bit of a stickler for proper grammer. This has earned me some interesting replies in chat rooms. Although the slash doesn't bother me much, I rarely use it myself, saving it for occasions where I want to specify that both dominants and submissives are included in what I am addressing.
One thing I do find annoying is someone's failure to use a capital letter in my name when addressing me. This is not because I'm a Dom and assume I am due the respect, it is because: a.) It is a proper name, and  b.) Its the way I write it, and purposefully misspelling my name is as insulting as purposefully mispronouncing it.
Of course, I mostly take the grammatical vagaries of the general internet public in stride, and you'll never see me complain about it again.

This post is OK!

Or, rather, Oll Korrect. Please everyone start using the lengthier but proper phrase. Anything else is a complete bastardization of whatever language that is.

I/i’ve never used it to indicate myself as a switch because I/i was always told that the letter ‘I’ standing alone should always be a capital letter otherwise it’s just bad grandma. Yep. I/i would also say that saying ‘W/we’ and U/us makes the P/person sound like T/they are suffering from a mental illness such as multiple personalities disorder.

MistressSassy66 -> RE: Use of the '/' (8/6/2007 3:07:44 PM)

I use the / thing all the time...
Why because I was taught to acknowledge P/people for who T/they are either D or s.
I dont do it to every single word but some are just out of habit.

I also feel that Capitals should be used when addressing a Master/Mistress/Dom/Domme
especially when writing a letter.
Not because I aspire to be every submissives Mistress but as a sign of respect for Me.
Yup I have a baaaad habit with that darn M too...

Sir...You are being a bad boy, shame on You.

PairOfDimes -> RE: Use of the '/' (8/6/2007 3:58:16 PM)

Some people like to capitalize all nouns, pronouns, and proper names of dominants, while nouns, pronouns, and proper names of submissives are all in lowercase. Ordinary English involves capitalization of proper names and the pronoun "I". When one needs to write to or of a group that involves dominants and submissives, if using "kinklish" (this goofy capitalization scheme), one occasionally refers to the group with a slash, "Greetings A/all," "W/we will leave now."

The slash in d/s--I don't know why it's there, but it's different from the one above. D/s stands for "dominance/submission" or "dominant/submissive," which are two complementary, opposite activities. Two sides of a coin, if you will. The slash might exist to differentiate them from the other two sets of activities that make up BDSM: "SM," sadomasochism, a unified activity, and "B&D," bondage and discipline, two activities that can go together, but can also be independent of one another, and are neither opposing nor complementary.

LeatherBentOne -> RE: Use of the '/' (8/6/2007 4:13:34 PM)

I believe it started with the Internet so that people could distinguish who is dominant and who is submmive rather than rely on a name to differentiate.  Then, somehow it became a sign of respect and protocol.  I dont care if someone uses it, but I dont bother myself other than to capitalize my name here.
