**Fast Reply** While we are on the rant, I want to also add Anne Rice and other bdsm "novels" to the mix.  They are just that, fiction.  My last slave had a set of books that were her favorites, and of course the female slave got farmed out to many every night for their sexual satisfaction, and her Lady's also.  She spent several hours being (yes, being, others did the work) prepared for the parties every night.  It never once mentioned that the Lady wanted her floor scrubbed!!!!  I think sometimes that also does a great disservice to those that acquire a hugely romanticized view of WIITWD and therefore label themselves as slaves.

Here is my vision:

A brightly colored room. Along the walls are fur lined cuffs attached to plastic chains. A plush St. Andrews cross dominates the back of the room. On a green Playschool table rests several playdough Wartenberg wheels.

A man in a big orange animal suit is in the center of the room. He is Spanky the Castle Realm Walrus. Around his furry neck is a thin velcro backed collar with the word " Daddy " stenciled on the front.

He and a small crowd of leather bedecked babyboys and babygirls are holding hands and dancing in a circle, singing

" I spank girls. I spank boys. I sure love these impact toys. Aren't you glad we have this game. The vanilla world is really lame. "

They collapse onto their backs, laughing and rolling around. Presently Spanky sits up and says

" Hey little subbies, wanna play with my new feather flogger? It sure leaves some nasty tickle welts, nyuck nyuck, nyuck! "

CR was also the first site i was refered to when starting out, but not the only. i would hope that i was not in the minority when i was a newbie, as far as reading every possible thing i could get my hands on about this lifestyle. Researching helped me in figuring out who i was, and if it wasn't for ALL the different perspectives available, that process may have taken a lot longer. i find it hard to believe that S/someone could get scared away from the lifestyle just by that site, cause if that's the case, that person must not possess the skills to really research the subject. That's like saying S/someone got scared away because of reading one hardcore site, i agree with what Stephan had said earlier..."someone who is that easily turned off by the foo foo stuff probably shouldn't stick around anyway."

On another note, i learned something new from this thread, i never knew what "WIITWD" meant, lol. It is true W/we learn something new every day.

i find it sad that someone would take those books literally. i for one, happen to like that particular set of chronicles very much, but i also know that it is strictly fiction. (BTW, it does have slaves scrubbing floors and doing menial tasks throughout the series ) But to say that liking those books, or having read those books does a disservice, i don't agree with. If a sub/slave believes it is not fiction then that is a problem with that sub/slave, not the books. W/we all know that there are some in the lifestyle that shouldn't be, including those living in fantasy. There is nothing wrong with having a romanticized view as long as it is based in reality and works for that P/person. So as far as what view O/one takes from the articles/books they read, wether it should be viewed as fact or fiction, has to do with the P/people themselves, not with the articles/books.

People will take any set of fiction and adopt it to reality.  It's just human nature.

I haven't read the Beauty books, but in talking to those who have and enjoyed it I can't imagine they're any more dangerous to the lifestyle than Harry Potter is to Wicca.  I have less of a bias against them I think, because they are potrayed as fiction, not reality.

I know several people who think the Beauty series, (which I own and find have no value at all, anyone interested in purchasing?), the Marketplace series to be great representations of reality.

They're fiction and obviously so.  But, like any fiction, one can pull and idea or thread from it and adapt it to a real life situation.

Same thing really, for CR.  Take what you personally find of value, leave the rest.  If you find nothing of value, that's fine too.

Greetings Stephann,

i would agree with your analogy. i have read the beauty series and the potter series and i have practiced a bit of wiccan in my time. So i agree. Personally, i feel the people that over-romantisize WIIWD, did the same thing with vanilla relationships. Infact, i think it is probably more prevelant in vanilla society due to lacking an outlet for fantasy. We have dungeons, play parties., etc

And to Rabbit: Ofcourse we all want you - you are adorable even when you are serious

BRAVO Emperor1956 (a very good year)!!!  You are the voice of reason and not just because i agree with everything that you wrote here.  Thank you for posting your comments.

Like you, i had never heard of CastleRealm before reading this thread.  Unlike you, i still haven't gone to check it out, mainly due to just not having much time online lately.  Maybe we could start a club for those of us, who have been involved in BDSM for longer than the Internet has been around and who never heard of CastleRealm.  i also have never read any of the "Beauty" books.  The only BDSM novel i have ever read is "The Story of O."  Henry Miller is one of my favorite authors.

I never was on the CastleRealm site until this evening, when this thread prompted me to see for myself*.  And now that I've seen just a bit of it....eh.   But Stephann, Michael and others -- why get so upset?  If CR bothers you, then what about the Beauty series?  Or people who think the movie 9 1/2 weeks is the real deal for B/D/S/M?  There will always be something that "dumbs down" a complex set of ideas.  It is human nature.

I look at CR this way:  Maurice Girodias, the owner of Olympia Press and first (brave) publisher of Nabakov's Lolita, William Burroughs, Henry Miller and not coincidentally a ton of smut was accused of publishing nothing but pornography.  He reportedly said "At least pornography gets people to read who might not otherwise pick up a book."   I think CR is like that -- it helps people who have no other initial connection to the world of what we do connect.  How can that be bad?

FR, to everyone, and no one:   Someone said they wanted to use "Firefly" as their B/D/S/M model.  I'm down with that!   Actually I use "Animal House" as my personal B/D/S/M tome.   And you are all on double secret probation.

Thanks, Joy for the kind words.
