Looks as tho' we will have to man the gunboats with instructions to "watch the Canadians".
Just so we know what we are up against does Canada maintain military forces ?

Wait a second, I thought global warming was a hoax.

Canada has been gearing up for this for quite some time now.  With the warming planet they estimate in about 20 years there will be a functioning North West passage, and huge amounts of shipping is going to start passing through.

According to FirmHandKY's computer modelling studies, it is.

Somebody should tell the Canadians.

Cute.

And cigarette smoking doesn't really cause cancer.

Sorry you are confused LAM.  That the planet warms and cools, and has been in a long term warming, with a few dips since the trough of the last Ice Age, is not disputed by anyone, except a few "Flat Earth" types.  The Geologic record sugests it will get quite a bit hotter before it cools off again.  There is debate over whether there is Man caused Catastrophic Global warming, and if it is man caused what to do about it.....which is a different thread and has been beaten to death.

You do know that the Canadian Dollar is over $0.95 US and rising, right?  I pretty sure you're thinking of a time back in the 90s when the dollar was hovering around 70-80 cents.

Yep - the weak dollar is one of the reasons for the decrease in traffic at Windsor's casinos.  It's not such a bargain anymore, compared to the ones in Detroit.

...just wait 'til folks need passports to cross, that'll put another whammy on 'em.

Anyone that knows anything never trusted those damned Canadians.

Their eyes are too close together.

A sure sign of criminal intent if you ask me.

Wha'da'ya mean? We got the Arctic fair and square, in the time honoured and globally approved method of taking it from the people who lived there, the Inuit.

No robot sub or silly Ruski flag can trump that.

Now get off our snow heap!

Excuse me?!? I am thoroughly offended! I can't believe you said our eyes are too close together and therefore show criminal intent!

Effin' Americans! Always having to insult somebody!

Don't you know we have BEADY eyes and floppy heads??[;)]

luckydog1 -> RE: Land grab in the Artic (8/11/2007 11:29:02 AM)

LAM, I don't think it was cute, it is truth.  That is why you could only respond with a flippiant response, instead of logic or reasoning.  Most people who smoke a cigarette do not get cancer(lung cancer), and not all lung cancer victims were smokers....So smoking does not "cause" cancer, but increases the chances.

I do understand why you do not want to get into a "what to do about it " discussion on Global Climate variation.  If Carbon Offsets, had been allowed as part of Kyoto it would have been law a decade ago

Lordandmaster -> RE: Land grab in the Artic (8/11/2007 11:48:55 AM)

Please, I've written at length about global warming and "what to do about it" right here in these forums.  I'm just not in the mood to go over it all AGAIN, especially not for someone who's proved in the past that he disregards inconvenient facts.

Let's just say that the overwhelming majority of climate scientists are on my side, and leave it at that.  Yes, they could all be wrong...and the pyramids could have been built by extraterrestrials, too.

luckydog1 -> RE: Land grab in the Artic (8/11/2007 12:43:49 PM)

LAM, but your what to do about it was join Kyoto.  If the Goal of Kyoto was to lower Global Net Co2 emmisions, it could have included offsets and been implemented over 10 years ago.  So obvioulsy the goal is something other than lowering Global Net CO2 emmissions.  Simply look at how Kyoto was put together and you can easily see the purpose. and it has nothing to do with the enviroment... And you are not dumb enough to pretend you don't know it.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Land grab in the Artic (8/11/2007 12:48:22 PM)

It wasn't implemented ten years ago because the United States refused to accept it.  Other than that, I don't know what you're talking about.

Besides, when have I ever mentioned the Kyoto Protocol?  It's already out of date.

Emperor1956 -> RE: Land grab in the Artic (8/11/2007 12:57:59 PM)

FR:   Notwithstanding the masturbatory arguments above, cigarette smoke DOES in fact cause cancer.  Or things contained in that smoke do.  That's why we call certain things a "carcinogen".  Not all people who smoke get cancer.  Not all cancers are caused by cigarette smoke.  But it is pretty well accepted by anyone with 3/4 of a brain that several of the components of cigarette smoke cause cancer.

Portugal once was one of the most powerful countries in the world.  How the mighty have fallen, eh?

and the only reason to comment on this thread at all is it allowed Ron to say "usufruct"   Hee heeeeee.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Land grab in the Artic (8/11/2007 1:11:18 PM)

You're right, of course, but I didn't bother to take him up on that because he was using a right-wing conception of "causality" that serves no purpose other than to relieve cigarette companies of their legal and moral obligations.  He is saying that, since not everyone who smokes a cigarette will come down with cancer, smoking can't CAUSE cancer; at best it CONTRIBUTES to it.  I didn't want to get into a whole discussion of sufficient causes, efficient causes, etc., with someone whose sole purpose seems to be try to convert the Collarme forums to Fox News Web Edition.

Even tho' the land grab of the Golden West in the USA was undoubtedly "right" I'll bet this one isn't. he he he he he
Dont do as I did whatever you do.

I wouldn't be absolutely sure that this "grab" is not right.
I personally don't think it is as i am in favor to the old british idea of "the freedom of sea doctrine" limiting national rights and juristiction over the oceans to a tiny strip of land surrounding a nation's coastline ( cannon range initially then fixed to 3 nautical miles).
The modern international law however is quite different and this principle is unfortunately completely unattended.
It was first Truman who, in a declaration the 28th september 1945 extended the united states jurisdiction over all natural resources on the nation's continental shelf and other nations followed right away.
The principle was at the end established in a UN conference in montego bay in 1982 , the works of this conference are the the foundation of the modern Sea Law ( ironically the convention is not yet ratified by the US).
The convention establishes that the sea up to 200 nautical miles and more if there is a continental shelf continuity as it claims Russia for the north pole.
If the north pole lies on the same continental shelf of Russia, the russian would be just respecting the current international law.
Of course that is not yet proved and the claims of Canada, Denmark, Norway ( the US who have not signed the convention can't claim anything according to the convention of Montego Bay) are still valid.
The russians claims however cannot easily dismissed as a joke but they must be taken into consideration. these claims don't come from nowhere but on the contrary they are inspired from the precedents of the US (and other countries) and find a support even in the international law.

have a good day you all!
