My sister just got a German Shorthair Pointer from the pound last month.  Sadie was emaciated when found, hips and ribs totally jutting out.  Very sad.  She is the sweeeeeetest dog.  She loves my little nephews and follows my sister around everywhere.  When I come to visit she sits at my feet and puts her chin on my knee and just wags her tail happily.  It's nice to see her filling out as she gains much needed weight.   She is about six years old and a dear.

I agree about adopting pets from the shelter.  Every shelter dog I've met just seems so grateful to have a home!

I cast another vote for mutt dogs/shelter dogs.  My life has been a series of (to paraphrase George Carlin) orphans and shelter dogs, and every one of them has been an awesome pet.

As far as "black dogs", yes, large black dogs are the hardest ones for shelters to find homes for, the hardest to adopt out.

Different breeds have different personalities and needs and activity levels, but for the most part, aggression isn't inborn, it results from unknowing, abusive, or negligent owners.  I have become a huge fan of pit bulls and pit bull mixes because the three that are owned by friends and relatives of mine are some of the best-natured, loving and smartest dogs I know.  It's all about the "parenting" :)

To Jo....you had to put Sammy Two-toes down???   I wrote to you on the other side, did you get it?

We show and breed German shepherd dogs but they all live with co-owners and handlers, my days of running a kennel are over :). We recently lost our Cane Corso, spanish mastiff, he was R's before I came here, and we just lost our siamese cat to cancer. We are awaiting the arrival of our new puppy...a yuppie puppy, we are getting a golden retriever, to go along with the white picket fence :). She'll be ready to come home the end of the month.

I have a White Husky/Yellow Lab mix.
I have owned quite a few dogs in my life but this
dog out-smarts them all. He is very intelligent, loyal
and protective. Although is is a mellow dog when the
situation is relaxed, if it were to change  to threatening
he would not hesitate to respond, especially when it
comes to me.

He is 11 yrs. old and when he goes it is going to be Hell
for me[:o].
I will again get another dog and it would most likely be a
Shepard/ Lab or Husky/Lab mix as I have found this combination
to be very complimentary to my personality.

Missy.

edited to add; I usually always go the Pound, shelter, or Humane Soc. route when getting a new pet.

I have German Shepherds aswell, one female at 4 and a male at 2.  He has just been diagnosed with EPI which means he has to have liquidised pigs pancreas mixed into everything he eats for the rest of his life and she has just had her ear operated on and is trashing my house with the large bucket collar she has on - JOY!  Wouldn't swap them for the world though, ive had them both since they were 7 weeks old, they are wonderful family dogs, very intelligent, I can trust them with the youngsters and apart from the constant battle with the fur, they are just fabulous.

i also have a yellow lab/husky mix. she is alittle over 3 years old. the biggest fault she has is that if she gets loose she takes off running, she'll come home but she wont come when i call. so i can't just let her loose around me.she also plays alittle rough witht he cats on occasion, she likes to pounce at them and shes 65 lbs so it often worrys me and she recently injured my sickly simease.
However she is Very good with children and usually great with all animals.. she would never hurt one on purpose. we just bought a female chocolate toy poodle, we had looked into chelters but poodles are very rare in shelters in my area so finally i settled on buying one as my mother needed a companion. poodles are great dogs, as are much of the poodle mixes. we had thought for a while of getting a goldendoodle as they have calm temperments and have that great poodle trait of not shedding. Big bonus. Artemis ( my lab/husky mix) plays with Mya ( the poodle) All the time.. at first i was alittle uneasy as artemis is soo big and mya just a lil baby at only currently 4 lbs but only once in a while does she make her cry ( and poodles are big babys) and right away mya goes back for more.
i'm writing a book here lol haha
anyway lab/huskys are great dogs and so are poodles! eventually i am thinking of perhaps breeding my artemis with a miniture poodle :)

acissej -> RE: what kind of dog do u have and what is great about the breed? (8/12/2007 4:29:38 PM)

I have a wheaten terrier and a wheaten terrier/american eskimo mix that I got through a wheaten terrier rescue group.  Wheatens are very energetic dogs and often retain puppy-like qualities into their teens.  They're generally sweet-natured and love kids (though they can sometimes be too crazy for little kids).  On the negative side, they're stubborn, difficult to train (especially when it comes to jumping on people) and not all that smart.

My wheaten/eskie mutt, however, is brilliant and has learned all kinds of cool tricks and useful skills (like how to unlock and open the door for me--and only me--when I've got an armful of groceries).  He's a tremendous jumper and very agile.  He takes after his eskie side and is a good watch dog.

Edited because I forgot to add that the other good thing about wheatens is that they don't shed and, because they produce less dander than dogs that shed, most people with dog allergies can tolerate them.

You were probably just kidding :), but in case you were serious, that's really not a good idea in practice.  The puppies would most likely be way too large for her to carry to term and she'd most likely have to have a c-section, which would be hard on her and expensive for you!

MissIsis -> RE: what kind of dog do u have and what is great about the breed? (8/12/2007 4:36:16 PM)

I have had various dogs all my life.  I have had 2 rescues that were terriers, both very loyal, loving & great companions, & very protective of me.  The dog I have now, is a White West Highland Terrier.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: what kind of dog do u have and what is great about the breed? (8/12/2007 4:40:52 PM)

We had a doberman/german shephard mix at one point.  He lived to be 17 years old, and he was the most amazing dog we had ever gotten.  We got him at a shelter, and when we got him we were warned about his "agressive tendancies" becasue of his breed mix.  This was the same dog that my baby cousin would sleep on, and when she was about 2, shed sit with his food bowl in her lap while he ate, and pry his mouth open to look at the food he was chewing.  Hed wait patiently until she was finished, and resume chewing as if nothing had happened.
We left him long earred and long tailed, and he was blind in one eye due to glaucoma. He looked like he was wearing a monicle all the time.

TheHeretic -> RE: what kind of dog do u have and what is great about the breed? (8/12/2007 5:28:48 PM)

I keep a wolf hybrid (Akita/Arctic wolf) I took from the litter at 8 weeks.  He has been the most amazing furry friend ever.  The challenges of raising and training such a breed have been completely worthwhile.  It isn't something I would reccommend for everyone.

They have opened a nice little dog park here in town.  I love watching him strut around like he owns the place, but is completely willing to share with the others.

We also have an old cat we took in when her old lady owner passed and a kitten that was raised by the wolf.  The kitten isn't nice.

The next dog will probably come from the pound.  I have a friend out there keeping an eye open for something appropriate to my house.

BRNaughtyAngel -> RE: what kind of dog do u have and what is great about the breed? (8/12/2007 5:37:07 PM)

I have an Akita.  Used to have two, but my furry girl passed away last year at almost 12.

I could fill pages with what I love about the Akita, but I do not recommend them for most people.  They are way too much dog for the average dog person and not even appropriate for many above average dog people.

I can't imagine my life without an Akita in it.  [:)]

nyrisa -> RE: what kind of dog do u have and what is great about the breed? (8/12/2007 10:01:29 PM)

We were given a puppy some years back; we took her to keep her from going to the pound. Although she was the sweetest dog I ever knew, it turned out to be disastrous. She grew into what looked like a full blooded spitz.......she was HUGE, and her head was massive. Folks in the neighborhood were frightened by her size and big jaws, and since she was a Houdini, and managed to get out of the fenced yard too often, neighbors kept threatening to call the pound. We ended up having to chain her when she was outside, and I just hate chaining a dog. Plus, she killed every cat that wandered through the yard. She didn't act mean to them, just acted like she was playing and having a great time, but she ended up killing 5 cats before we ended up having her put down. It broke our hearts to do this to such a sweet natured dog, but no one would take her.

We made a vow then to only have small dogs. Since then we have had two shih tzus, and loved them both. Very intelligent dogs, very laid back, good for petting and relaxing on the couch with. My daughter later had two pomeranians, who turned out to be neurotic little barkers. She also had a rat terrier, who was a good dog.

My vote for easy temperament would be for the shih tzu, especially if you don't have lots of space for a big dog. Our new puppy is a chihuahua/yorkie mix, and he is doing great so far. All our dogs and cats get along well, and like to curl up on the porch together.

I no long have a dog, but in the past I've had the good ol' american mutt, a couple of dalmatians, a couple of labradors and a miniature dachshund.  All of them were great dogs to own.  My favorite had to be the dachshund.  He truly just wanted to please and to be loved.  I miss him.

Yes, unfortunately I did. The gardner left the gate open and he escaped from the yard. There's a major roadway not far away and he was hit by an SUV. The injuries were too many to truly look at being healed ever. It was a difficult decision but in the end, his suffering was simply to much.

Other side as in IM? I replied to your IM and hadn't heard back. Other side CM? no.
