I have an Akita. Used to have two, but my furry girl passed away last year at almost 12.

I could fill pages with what I love about the Akita, but I do not recommend them for most people. They are way too much dog for the average dog person and not even appropriate for many above average dog people.

I can't imagine my life without an Akita in it. [:)]

i had an akita as well. i bought him after a HUGE amount of research. they are very good with children (although they're brilliant with baby's - mine would watch over a friends handicapped baby for hours) i'd never leave them alone with a young one, and i trained ours so my pre-teen girls could walk him. young children would call out 'bear' and want to cuddle him - he loved that, and teens would say 'wolf' and walk on the other side of the street. they are very loyal to a family and very gentle, but look fearsome. he ate less than my 3 cats when he hit maturity, and slept most of the day. great foot warmer in winter! BUT they need a lot of training as to where they stand in the pack. he was my first dog and i had to leave him with ex [:(] although i'd love another, i think i'll get a shiba-inu next time due to space considerations

i have a jack russell that was rescued from the Houston aspca after hurricane katrina.  i could not ask for a better dog.  From the first day here, he has been loving, gentle and has this look in his eyes that seems to let me know that he understands what is going on.

we just adopted a min. pin/toy fox terrier puppy from a local shelter and so far, he seems like he'll grow to be another great dog.  He brought back some spunk into the jack, and for that reason alone, i will always be grateful.

The last dog I had I saved from making it to the pound, but he started out as a pound puppy....he had been so abused that the staff thought they might have to put him down, but he healed, and was adopted.  He was part chow and part lab, one of he happiest dogs I ever knew...he'd actually smile when you came home.  He was too smart for my own good, learned commands such as "wait for me", "this way", "that way", "over here", "over there".....he loved his kitties.....he'd get depressed when he was left alone, and it broke my heart.  That and he'd stress when I packed a suitcase.....didn't matter that he always went with me.  He was so afraid of being abandoned again. He played my mom like a fiddle, she spoiled him worse than her grandkids!  He had the greatest disposition.  He ended up with Cushing's disease, and I was forced to put him down 3 years ago.......it devastated me!

Don't discount an older dog.....as much as I wanted a puppy, with my work schedule, it would have been just too much to have to housetrain one.  Head to the shelter.....if you're looking for a particular tpe of dog, let them know...that's how my mom saved their puppy from the pound...Jade never made it that far....they sent the kid to her, she took one look at her, and it was love at first sight!  And, as it was mentioned, research different types of breeds, and make sure the dog you choose is compatible with your living situation.  That way, everyone will come out happy.

Good luck!

I have a Shiba Inu.  The breed originated in Japan.  They resemble the Spitz somewhat.  They are considered to be at the high end of the small breed category.  The breed is known for its cleanliness and good grooming capabilities.  They tend to be much cleaner and more odor free than other dogs.  They do shed about twice a year.  They're uncannily smart as a breed in general and mine (her name is Hashbrown) is no exception.  They are said to be "escape artists" which may have more than a thread of truth as Hashbrown was found wandering the streets of Hershey and ended up in the local pound where I found her.  Since she's been with me she has not exhibited any "escape artist" behavior however.  I think it's because that famous Shiba Inu intelligence tells her there's nothing here she wishes to escape from. She is also the most pleasant, friendly, good natured and loving dog I have ever had the opportunity to love and I have had a few.  You can probably tell I cherish her and should I ever have reason to get another dog my heart and head would both suggest this breed.
