Please please please adopt from the Humane Society or a shelter!
The situation these days at the Humane Society is dire at the moment.  I even heard a rumor that they actually may have to begin euthanizing animals (they are known as a No Kill shelter) because of the overcrowding.
I have a 12 year old border collie mix named Loki who is the sweetest thing.  She trained up sooo well.   I got her in 1995 as a companion to my "first born", a Carolina Dog (www.carolinadogs.com) or American Dingo) named Shogun who I got in 1990.  Sadly we had to put Shogun to sleep 2 years ago and I miss him terribly.  He was, bar none, the coolest dog I ever met.  Shogun was just like Garfield and Loki is like Odie.. Pretty funny!
I got them both from the Humane Society.

I have a St. Bernard.  Well, Mom has it, Bailey lives in Vegas. She was a rescue from people who got the dog as a puppy thinking AWW how cute and then realized how much work goes into a pet. Bailey is an amazingly affectionate, lovabe dog who hasnt a clue shes a big animal.  I have a picture of her in my profile, she thinks shes a lapdog, all 115 lbs of her. Shes amazing with kids, they are about snout high and perfect licking height. She is fairly good with other dogs, but since she doesnt realize that shes so much bigger than they are she tends to play a little rough with other animals. If you like big dogs, have a decent amount of room, and access to a dog run or somewhere else for them to get out and play, Id say a St Bernard is great.  They are, however, messy.  They drool. Alot.

I always got my animals from rescue shelters, and had always wanted to 'adopt a greyhound'...however 10 yrs ago my spoiled 'princess' daughter talked my then husband into an AKC dalmation...named her 'lou dog' after the Sublime song...and she is a great dog...smart...she 'waves'...speaks,wispers...wouldn't trade her for anything

For the last 5 years I've had whippets and greyhounds. I can't be a bigger proponent of either breed. They are sweet gentle loving companions with personality and intelligence to boot. They are the cats of the dog world and sleep an amazing amount of the day away. Then they'll get the zoomies and tear around the house at full speed before laying down for another long nap. They are truly grace and beauty in motion when running full out.

Absolutely go to a shelter or rescue. There are so many wonderful loving dogs out there that are in need of a loving home. When my heart finally heals after having to put down Sammy Dean the greyhound I'll perhaps look for another companion for Chloe (The Whippet Bitch). Try www.petfinders.com and check out the rescues and shelters dogs in your area. You can search by breed, gender and even age.

I agree with Bossy...adopt from a shelter.  I have been, in the last year, to two no kill shelters in our area and some of those dogs and cats there have lived in those shelters for upwards of 10 or 12 years.  Awww.....I really can't grasp the idea of $700 dogs from breeders or pet stores.  Give me a mutt anyday.  Having said that:

I have a cocker spaniel I got from a human society.  Beautiful dog.  Owner couldnt' keep her due to a move.  Got her about age 9...had her about 5 years now.  She's old and showing her age...but great dog.

Every dog prior to her has been a mutt of some sort and I can't really think of anything better than a cute little mix of this and that.

I have a Beagle and a Golden Retreiver mix.

Beagles are great because they are - Tranquil (not a lot of yapping and running around like a crazed pup). They are also fairly intelligent, sweet-natured, and handsome. They don't shed much, either, and don't require a lot of grooming. I give mine a bath maybe 2-3 times a year, and brush him a few times a week - that's it. They are not a dangerous breed, and make perfect family pets for families with UMs (even though I don't have any UMs, they do). They can bay (a long wounded-sounding bark) at squirrels, etc., but can be trained not to do it very often, if it becomes a problem.

Golden Retrievers - are great for the same reasons but - they are more active, can bark more, and they do shed (a lot). They may require more brushing, to keep things like burrs, etc. out of their fur. But they are great with people (especially UMs) and, they are beautiful animals- their sweet dispostions make the shedding part worthwhile.

If I hadn't already settled on these two dogs, and-or wanted another one, it would probably be a Welsh Corgi, or a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Welsh Corgis can be pretty "high-energy"(and that is the reason I didn't get one the first time, I don't particularly appreciate "yappy", jumpy dogs.) But otherwise, they are oh so cute, and great, IMO. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are just sweet and tranquil, and adorable. But they do shed, and quite a bit, too.

I love my doggies! I got them both at the Humane Society. Neither of them cost more than $75. Mine both eat Beneful brand dog food, and I'd put the cost of owning a dog at around $300 (each) a year (with Vet visits, food, snacks, toys, leashes, etc). That's actually not a lot, compared to the love and companionship they offer in return.

Have fun and good luck with your new pet(s)!

- Susan

Carrin Terriors (sp?).  They're.. ..fiesty..   If you want a dog that will never lose its energy, and go nuts constantly, they're a safe bet.  Heh.  Loving things, and they love to sniff down things outside.

We've had trouble for finding them for under 400 USD, though, so they might be a little more pricey to acquire- then again, I'm not sure what other breeds might cost.

I'm glad.  A lot of those animals really need a home.  They'll truly have something to love you for.

We just got a Jack Russel Terrior at the pound Friday, and couldn't be happier.  He's a year old and the best thing that's ever happened to my 15 y/o.  A total joy...calm and quiet...fetches like there's no tomorrow, walks through the creek with him, and sleeps curled up next to him at night.  I'm so happy about it.

I have a basset hound and a lab/springer spaniel cross. Both are great dogs - the basset is so funny - and lazy - loves her food and doesn't actually realise how big she really is!! She thinks she can curl up on the sofa beside you - but she actually takes it over!! The lab/springer cross has the gentlest, and sweetest personality - she will do anything you ask for a pat on the head (like her mommy!!).
I agree that you should go to a shelter for a dog - there are so many great dogs abandoned because they don't have a certain look or they take time to train or simply because people got them expecting to have no work to put into them! Dogs take time and energy - but the payback is great - theres nothing better than seeing a wagging tail and getting a big welcome when you come home from work - well, maybe two wagging tails! And i really believe that every dog can make a great companion if they are shown love and trained properly.
As for cats - i have never been a cat person, and will never get a cat at this stage because my basset is afraid of them!! If she sees one she will sit as far away as possible and howl til i get rid of it!!

I've got a black lab/doberman mix... fortunately, he got all the temperment labs are known for, since they're my weakness.

His name is Seuss, and I adopted him from the Humane Society when he was already seven years old, and he'd spent most of a year there... thanks to a few health issues he picked up, etcetera. I think what makes me really like labs, and Seuss in particular, is the way you have to earn their respect/love. Seuss, when he first moved in, would let me pet him, walk him, whatever... but he was stand-offish. He'd sleep NEAR me, but not by me. He wouldn't really hang out with me that much, etcetera.

About a month after I got him, he got hurt- no idea how, still. I took him to the emergency clinic, had him stitched up, carried him home (because he was still groggy), held him steady so he could go to the bathroom, lifted him up the stairs, and in general did the stuff you do for someone that's hurt.

After that, there's nothing the dog wouldn't do for me. God help anyone who even looks remotely threatening around me or anyone I obviously like... Seuss doesn't tolerate that.

My only suggestion is to not rule out an older dog... the adjustment might be difficult, but they're statistically less likely to be adopted, and that's just a damned shame.

Scared of black dogs? Dang I've never heard of that..weird.

I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback mixed with unknown hound and I love her. She is the most empathic dog I have ever known & she was a shelter dog. As much as I love her I wish someone had noticed her and used her as an assistance dog. But I got her instead  .
She has gotten a wee bit neurotic in her older years and she sheds like nothing I've ever seen lol but she is beautiful and loving.
When I was bedridden for a year from surgery she very rarely left my side. Yay for dogs!
I think I have a pic of her on my profile.

I have 2 German Shepherds and a foster boy. One shepherd is black. All of my dogs are rescues, and I couldn't ask for better dogs. Probably the biggest issue is shedding. This breed sheds year round, and so a really good vacuum cleaner is mandatory. But they are SMART and they are characters!!! Never a dull moment in this house.

Do yourself and your dog to-be, a favor and really research what kind of dog fits you best. The number one reason dogs go to shelters is incompatability. Dont buy a dog based on cuteness, or a movie dog or a dog that does tricks on TV.

There are sites available that let you put in what traits you like, IE size, companion, sporting, shedding non shedding, long , short hair, high/low energy etc. Then, based on the factors you listed including your housing and lifestyle, the type dogs the come closest will be at the end of the questionarre. Heres a site I found that looks good. Its got a take a quiz link on the page. I did it to make sure it worked. It came back with 19 breeds that would fit my criteria. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/searchcategories.htm

I highly recomend to anyone, that they give the idea to adopt tons and tons of thought. After youre set on the breed type, I then suggest petfinder as the site to look through. I wish you all the best. A dog is a great animal to have and love as are cats.
