MissAidan -> Birth control question for the ladies (8/15/2007 7:41:30 PM)

Alright...so, I just got a new lady doctor, and it will be the end of the year before I have an appointment to get the birth control method that I want.  There are any number of alternatives to condoms at the drug store...not that we don't use condoms, sometimes we just like to play without them, while still being safe.  We've used the patch you insert fifteen minutes before with good results, but it's the fifteen minute thing that He doesn't like.  He has suggested that we use one of those creams or gels that you inject inside just before, but I am a bit worried about it dripping and making a mess, especially before we even get to the sex.  Any first hand experience or advice would be great!

Try the sponge, it's good for more than one round, and only a bit messy. Can be inserted in advance, or at the last minute. I would say the disadvantage is the same as for creams/gels, etc...taking oral out of the picture. The other thing to think about is going to your local planned parenthood/health department and getting started on the pill (or whatever form you prefer) through them, it's a lot more effective...

Thats the thing, I'm not interested in the pill or patch (been on that one) or the shot, which is all I can get through my local PP.  Since they approved the IUD for women who have not had children, thats what I am planning on.  The drug store alternatives are just for the time being until my apointment.  So, the gels and stuff don't drip on their own?

windchymes -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/15/2007 8:14:13 PM)

I always liked those little bullet-like inserts, too.  Fifteen minutes is nothing....just go down on him while it melts/  I've never yet met a guy who would complain about 15 minutes of oral sex. [:D]

Can you insert them sooner, rather than wait till he's "ready" to close the deal?  Hopefully, you're doing something for fifteen minutes before that.  Save the "Grab Me And Bend Me Over The Couch" for the "safe" times of the month....although that's a risky form of birth control.

sublimelysensual -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/15/2007 8:18:52 PM)

Ahh gotcha..I don't like the gels/creams because of the hassle of inserting them, that's why I've used the sponge..well, that and the fact it can be used for more than one session..I want to say it's good for 24 hrs, but check the package, it's been a while...

Not very well. Your best bet, if you really don't want to make a baby, is still a male condom.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/15/2007 8:34:53 PM)

Not using condoms all the time is about as bad as just not using condoms.

If the poor male is just so darn turned on that he can't wait 15 minutes- put on the condom.

What about a female condom?  You can insert it anytime beforehand and its just sitting there inside you whenever he's ready.

Ummm... it's not a pleasant experience. Reminds me of masturbating into a sandwich bag both in feel and sound... nasty.

Just use condoms - useful for more than just contraception. For example, balloon animals...

Is the IUD safe if you practice fisting with your Dom?

What this basically boils down to is what risk of making an UM you are willing to accept. Risk varies from product to product. I highly suggest stopping by Planned Parenthood and asking for literature on various forms of over the counter birth control. Female condoms are good but aren't as good as male. Gels and creams are better than nothing but not as good as paired with a condom.

I'm not saying I know for sure, but I would think so considering it's implanted in the uterus and fisting wouldn't go that far.  An IUD has to withstand monthly cramping and muscular contractions directly in the area, so I'd think fisting wouldn't matter.

Oh and almost all of the creams/gels suggest that you wait a few minutes before going at it to be most effective.  ALthough I have heard of a spermicidal film that is almost immediate.

But again, most of the reason people get unwantedly pregnant when on BC is because they don't use it correctly EVERY time.

They are really really tiny. As long as the fist doesn't actually get to the fallopian tubes (and why would it?), I don't think it would be a problem. He just has to make sure not to tug on the string.

An IUD is insterted with something that looks like a straw. Its very small.

One of my girl friends has it, she doesn't have little ones at the moment and wants to wait, adn she loves it. She said it took less than 15 min at her doctor's office. She got it done at PP.

Personally, I'm with everyone else, use the condoms, they are cheap, they work and since you have to wait so long to see your new doctor, they are your best bet if you can't wait the 15min for the gels, insertibles, etc.

MissAidan -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/15/2007 9:21:50 PM)

While I appreciate the safe sex lecture this thread has turned in to, I am aware that the male condom is my safest bet, and I am careful to always have ost of a box in my nightstand drawer when He comes down.  The spermacide option is just a once in a while thing.  I have done more research than I care to admit on the effectiveness of different methods, and we have talked about it at length.  I am simply looking for reccomendations.  I don't want to end up with a drippy or gooey mess, or with something that will stain my sheets or clothing if it does drip.  Just counting the days till my appointment...yikes, never thought I'd look forward to that!

Man, I wish the PP here would do IUD's for women who haven't given birth, but the last time I talked to them, they wouldn't.  I'd go back on the bc patch, since last time I was on it I lost weight and gained bigger boobs, but with all the things I've heared about them causing strokes and such, even in women around my age, I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole.

fungasm -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/15/2007 9:37:10 PM)

Since your need is temporary- and since you have been on the patch before- here is a solution.

Plan B.  (The morning after pill.)  Do not wait until the morning after.  Go to your pharmacist to make certain you have one who will sell it to you (or PP).  Then, if your fluid bonded and preventing pregnancy is your only concern- go at it.  The next day or the one after that, take the Plan B.  One of the side affects of this is that it's leaves you unable to conceive for up to 4 weeks.  (It's like getting a mondo shot of hormones.)  This is not what it is supposed to be used for. But if it works (and 96% of the time it does), it means no waiting, and no chemicals ingested during play.

Do some research first, and talk to your gyno.

Ick, I've taken plan b before after a really bad night when the condom broke in a previous relationship, and it was not a pleasent experience.  I have the luck of almost always getting the side effects of medication that according to the studies only 2% of people get.  Besides, that high a dose of hormones on even a semi-regular basis isn't such a great idea.  And it's been a couple of years since I was on the patch.
Edited to say: It's not that we absolutely can not wait fifteen minutes...well, sometimes we can't, but yes, then we use a condom.  I'll say it again...I just want to know peoples experiences with different gels/creams/insertables so that I can make an informed choice based on something besides just effectiveness.  Thanks.

feastie -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/15/2007 10:05:58 PM)

It's a risk that I would be unwilling to take.  I'd stick with the condoms and alternatives to vaginal sex.  Btw, the nuvaring is great.
