to answer the OPs original question...

the gels/creams will leak in the same manner that cream treatments for yeast infections do.  it's pretty much Newton's law, "what goes up, must come down" [:D].  it's not going to be major, but it will occur.  for me, the bigger hassle was the irritation.  all that sperm-killing goodness was a little rough on my tender bits.

honestly, I would vote for the sponge as a better alternative to spermicide alone.  you get the double protection of a barrier and a spermicide.

To me it sounds like you know your body very well and are trying everything, I would be careful about IUDs because of some scarring inside and a few have got prego with it. I was on the pill and switched to Norplants, had 2 sets each lasting 5 years with little problems. They are come back with a 3 year norplant . When I can I will go for them again. Good luck and have Fun!!!

Jenwantskittysla -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/17/2007 10:42:18 AM)

I have had first-hand experience of an IUD not working. Although the first one was not put in correctly and I have had no side affects from the Mirena IUD, and it does not have the weight gain affect either.  Athough there may be scarring from it bumping around for 5 years, it is minimal and hasn't affected me or anyone I know that have had it.  For my sub, I prefer either the Norplant or IUD. Long term, miminial side affects and then we can use her spontaneously.

Best protection for such situations remains the condom.  Just as the old military training films advised:  "Put it on before you put it in!" (which is the same advice I gave My ex's sons when they reached that magical time known as puberty!)

Either that or start buying baby clothes.

InsAndOutsFL -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/17/2007 1:07:26 PM)

I got pregnant once while on the pill, and once while using the gel/creme method.  SOOoo...two kids later I tried the Mirena IUD and its been around a year now with no side effects and no kids.  It takes a moment to put in, but dont believe the whole "It wont hurt more than a PAP smear" lecture, because it hurts like hell.  But, after 3 months of spotting all bleeding has stopped and no monthly bleeding either.  Though I still have the once a month "bitchies".

When I go out to play with folks other than my husband I use condoms, but for safe sex purposes since I take care of the pregnancy issue in other ways.

Good luck with which ever method you decide to use.

Jennifer

I had the Norplant in the mid 1990's, and I don't think the actual Norplant is available anymore. There is a new "version" called Implanon that was recently approved by the FDA that is one capsule inserted into the upper arm that is effective for three years.

desertdancer -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/19/2007 8:27:38 PM)

I had an IUD, at first I loved it then it became a NIGHTMARE! A nightmare of pure hell.  First of all, no one told me that the IUD can cause pimples and a bit of weight gain, not much weight gain but a little.  My skin has always been so very clear but after a year with the IUD I got pimples, big cystic ones only one or two a month but still not something you want.

Then the damn thing became implanted into me, my skin grew around it, I had no idea why I was having such horrible pain out of no where, pains so bad I'd double over, could not walk or even sit up, those pains dropped me to my knees so fast, could even make me vomit.  It started out only a few pains once and a while to full on pain every single day, it was crippling.

I went to the doctor to have it removed, but since it was still "Good" for a year the doctor wanted to wait, so I had that thing inside me pain, pimple and all for another year, when I finially got it out, puss poured, flowed rather from me for about two days thick whiteish green puss, I bled very heavily for about two weeks and ended up in the emergency room with my legs open for two differnt doctors it was just a mess, I was just a mess.

I've been pain free for a year now, thank god, no more huge pimples ,it took me months to heal up and since it has been removed I now have pain during sex.

I know the IUD is great for some, I just suggest any woman who wants one gets ALL the info the good and the bad from her doctor, because I didn't and paid for it.

Man, I wish the PP here would do IUD's for women who haven't given birth, but the last time I talked to them, they wouldn't.  I'd go back on the bc patch, since last time I was on it I lost weight and gained bigger boobs, but with all the things I've heared about them causing strokes and such, even in women around my age, I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole.

PP will do depo-provera (the shot) for women who have born children.

patwi -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/19/2007 10:15:59 PM)

If you're looking for permanant birth control, this is what I have been considering. www.essure.com , though I am not sure what the restrictions are as far as age and birth status. I know many docs won't do permanant BC for women with no kids ....as if I don't know myself well enough to make that choice....but that's an entirely different topic. :)

TankII7871 -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/20/2007 1:21:11 AM)

OK we have rings, creams, shots, IUD's IED's Greyhounds, rhythm, female condoms, male condoms, midget condoms, pills, mini pills, the morning after pill, the blue pill, menopause, and Voodoo, and not having sex at all (added only after my girl said it like 400 times)

The question is how do you feel about anal sex?

Eric

I am simply looking for reccomendations.

After some hot foreplay, look him in the eye while grabbing his penis and say, "Hurt me with that thing baby.", and then roll over on your tummy.

That'll carry you over for a while. [;)]

GhitaAmati -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/20/2007 10:17:17 AM)

LMAO Eric!!

Ive got the Mirena thingy, and I might be a self proclaimed pain slut, but damn it hurt going in, and the sound they do before hand caused some major cramping, from my doc "oh you may feel something like a mild mentrul cramp"..the hell with menstrual cramp, I thought I was having contractions and back in labor!!  Also, I know alot of people love the Mirena because apparently you arent supposed to have periods while its in, but Ive had mine in for over a year and I still bleed for a week and a half every month. I know for a fact that I never want any more children, I have 4 and for medical reasons my body wont handle another pregnancy, even if my mental state could handle another kid running around the house.....I picked the IUD because of it lasting for 5 years with no other worry...Sir wont allow me to have my tubes tied, and he refuses to let anyone near his balls with a scalpel. I still use a condom everytime I have sex with anyone other than Sir though....

ThunderRoad -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/20/2007 1:13:44 PM)

We have always liked using "VCF" which is a dissolving contraceptive film.  You insert it and it dissolves instantly and is good for a few hours or one "session".

If condoms aren't an option or desire, this is very unobtrusive and  effective.

You can find it in the birthcontrol section of any drugstore / walmart.

I have the IUD too.  hurt like a bitch to put in, was a bloody mess after and bled off and on for 3 months.  I still have horrible cramps, but no bleeding. U have to be on a period to get it. They wil sound your uterus first to make sure it will stay in.  that hurt like hell too.  but i do love it.

This is pretty much what I've heard from my friends with IUDs.  I'm currently on the pill (old faithful lol) but I've done the ring (Uh, I could feel it and so could my partner) and the patch (You'd think they'd use better glue on that thing it sucked).  The only non-barrier insertable I've liked is VCF but I haven't tried the sponge yet.

Someone mentioned Instead was "like" a diaphram.  It is not intended for family planning AT ALL.  The only thing Instead protects is the sheets from stains.

TankII7871 -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/20/2007 8:16:43 PM)

My Grandfather always told me to never trust anything that bleeds for 7 days and doesn't die.

Think about it if a man bled that long he would be dead.

cuffnspankme -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/21/2007 2:00:51 PM)

I myself use the NuvaRing. I love it and have never had it slip out, I tuck it behind my pubic bone. My gyno told me that it can be out for up to 3 hours and the hormones are still working in your system. It also contains enough hormones for you to be able to go 4 weeks between changing if you want. I am allergic to quite a few of the pills out there and have not had an issue with the ring. I love it. And I have never been told that my partner has felt it and I know I don't feel it.

phoenixxy -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/22/2007 5:15:29 AM)

I had the new implanon implant, it didnt work for me - after nonstop bleeding for 3 months, and i mean bleeding not spotting, i had it taken out
have a scar about half an inch from having it out on my arm, and would just recomend people thinking of it bear in mind possible side effects - as that length of bleeding caused lots of problems - with use of tampons etc, just not very pleasent!

MaDomAura -> RE: Birth control question for the ladies (8/22/2007 3:30:03 PM)

Here is some info. There is a contraceptive film that works upon application. My experience is that it was almost impossible to insert this "film" which is like a thin fruit roll up, properly! The instructions say to apply it to the cervix, which is in the back of the vagina. So, you grasp the film, it starts sticking to your fingers, and push it into the vagina aiming for the cervix. Depending on where you are in your cycle and how aroused you are the cervix can move up, making it harder to reach. I tried to leave it, and it just melted and held more to my fingers than anything. Sure, no drips but I never figured out how to insert it properly.

Now, I am a reproductive specialist, so I know my body well and I have tried nearly every method of birth control. I liked the cervical cap, it's like a mini diaphragm which is sized to fit over the cervix. It reminds me of a rubber thimble. You squeeze it and push it onto your cervix, and suction along with proper fit keeps it in place. Cons, requires fitting, not all clinics offer the device, some women can't be fitted, and it requires what some might call invasive insertion! Can be left in for 24 hours, and there are suggestions for use with spermicides.

The sponge is a simple spermicide solution. Just be sure to use lots of lube (I like silicon lubes), as abraded/irritated tissue is more apt to react to nonoxenol 9, which is the main ingredient in spermicides. It is good for repeated sexual encounters.

As for the IUD. If you use an IUD, fisting is possible BUT you may find that pressure on the uterus is uncomfortable or just painful as there will be this plastic object inside! My partner would often feel the string, which isn't string but a non reactive nylon fiber that protrudes from the opening or os, in the cervix. Cutting this to length can be tricky. Too long at it could be pulled on, or felt with fingers or a penis in the vagina. Too short and it can really poke the head of the penis, ouch! There is the risk that the string will be too short, causing removal to be difficult. I suggest letting the practitioner judge, and you can always go back for a "trim".

This is a little off topic, but watch out for Depo (the shot), and the patch. In spite of my education, I tried depo and once I had problems I found out some disturbing facts. European studies indicated much larger wight gain than the package insert. I gained 40 pounds, and this was within the indicated range of 25-50 pounds! Also, depo is a drug used to "chemically castrate" male sex offenders! Yes, it suppresses libido. Hard to get pregnant when you have zero interest in sex, oh and if you feel fat/unattractive. In my case I was asexual for 2 years, no desire no matter how I tried. Depo literally caused physical sexual dysfunction in my case. I couldn't orgasm, produced no lubrication, and sex was uncomfortable.

There have been times that IUDs were not available in the US due to complications from one version, the Copper 7 if I recall. It's not uncommon to have heavy periods, with increased cramping that in my case required medication to relieve. I had to remove my IUD under emergency care, when I collapsed in pain. I had that IUD for 18 months then I was suddenly overcome with pain. As it turned out, I have a septum, or wall in my uterus. The IUD was kind of "bent" to fit, and one day it expanded suddenly, which I can say was frightening.I had 2 normal pregnancies and births, both 9 pound babies no drugs, and still didn't know that my uterus was not "normal".

Normally the internal depth of the uterus will be determined with a sound, but that would not detect the septum. Only a hi-res ultra sound or laparscopic procedure would catch this anomaly. Actually I found out 4 years later when I had my tubal ligation! (On my birthday, yeah!) So, get a thorough exam, allow time to adjust to the IUD, read up on the specific brand you will get, and don't hesitate to call if you are in pain! NOTE, I think an IUD works great as long as the right product is selected and the "patient" is fully informed.

Sadly there is no perfect form of birth control, but I am thrilled to this day with having my tubes tied!

Moral of my story? DO YOUR RESEARCH!

Regards

MaDom Aura

Alright...so, I just got a new lady doctor, and it will be the end of the year before I have an appointment to get the birth control method that I want. There are any number of alternatives to condoms at the drug store...not that we don't use condoms, sometimes we just like to play without them, while still being safe. We've used the patch you insert fifteen minutes before with good results, but it's the fifteen minute thing that He doesn't like. He has suggested that we use one of those creams or gels that you inject inside just before, but I am a bit worried about it dripping and making a mess, especially before we even get to the sex. Any first hand experience or advice would be great!

Learn some foreplay that you both enjoy or get a towel. Dunno how much that helps....

Then again....I'm not a lady.
