No. 1 Abortion -- and please men, chime in; we women love hearing you tell us what to do.

I'm uncomfortable saying simply that I am pro, so I'll qualify it to say that I think it's better for a child to be unborn than to be born and left to suffer.
I am against using it as a form of birth control, but I think no woman should be forced to carry a human being unless/until she's ready to do it since it's much too big a responsibility when taken seriously.

quote:

No. 2 The Death Penalty -- are we killing too fast? Too slow? Or just right?
I would be all for it if the justice system was just, but since it is not, I am against it.

quote:

No. 3 Privatizing Social Security -- why not let Wall Street pick the pockets of the elderly? Why should gang members have all the fun?

I feel it's going to be a disaster even thought the current system feels kind of like robbery too with the low returns for a lifetime of investment to FICA (makes one feel Ficaed).. M

Dusty..the first post i made to begin this thtead was said tongue in cheek...a form of humor. Of course anything may be discussed. btw, the correct answers are

Outside
Tucked in; loosely
On
tomato

Now, what i'd like to know is this:

Do Y/you believe we have been contacted by aliens from outer space? If so, why?

And you have succeeded!
quote:

Do Y/you believe we have been contacted by aliens from outer space? If so, why?

Yes! Why? I think it would be arrogant to assume that we are the only intelligent life in the Universe, and I am sure there are many who are much more intelligent than we are!
Now do I think that all these people have been kidnapped and impregnated? Well, probably not, but for all I know, they are watching Me right now, and they are coming to take Me away! Oh No!

Refusing to assume that we are the only intelligent life in the universe is a far cry from believing that we have been contacted by aliens.

Edited to add: OK, I guess I took this thread too seriously. Now I'm curious to know whether those aliens have BDSM sites on the Alpha Centauri internet.

Well, I actually do believe that we have been contacted. And there is probably alot we don't know. There have been some good documentaries about area 51, and investigations into sightings. But most of the contact we do hear about is the sensasionalistic stuff you see in the Tabloids. Ya know, the headlines you read while waiting in line at the supermarket?
So that's a good question! How many people will admit to buying a trashy tabloid just to read some ridiculous story once in a while.
<raises hand> I will admit it! I love to read trash now and then. And I will even admit I watch more on cable tv than the Discovery and/or History channel. Sometimes I just like to escape into something that gets Me away from everyday life for a while.

Know what I never understand is why everyone thinks there are only aliens (different life forms) out there. I think one day 'aliens' will contact us but they will turn out to be human beings living on another planet in another solar system.

Well, I can't rule out anything that I can't disprove, but it seems awfully suspicious to me that we first started getting reports of alien visitations right around the time we started conceiving of exploring space in our own little rocketships. I mean, like, why didn't Aristotle ever talk about getting whisked away by some alien out for earthling manmeat? It's basically the same problem I have with theism. Ask a Christian, and God looks like Christ. Ask a Chinese, and God is a celestial mandarin. Ask a triangle, and God has three sides.

(Enduring Lam-respect if you can identify the allusion in the final line.)

Throughout history there have been stories and legends of Gods coming down to earth (mythology). Also stories of fairys , leprachauns, elves etc, substitute alien for any of those.

Well, OK, but leprechauns don't come down in a flying saucer. Besides, if aliens are just our version of leprechauns, that doesn't inspire much confidence in their existence. Actually, it kinda proves my point.

Who said they didn't? *shrugs* And who says what the other life forms might look like?
Actually there have been many ideas floating around for a long time about ancient history. Atlantis, advanced civilizations, the Pyramids, Stonehenge, Mythology. One of the original Star Trek episodes had a storyline that the Gods and Goddesses of Mount Olympus were actually beings with advanced powers from another solar system. I don't think it is that far fetched, and I find it all kind of fascinating.

Wow.... I take a five day vacation and miss out on all the lively debate on politics and other controversial subject matter

I'll make these answers fairly short but sweet.

Abortion : Morals and ethics are best left up to individuals themselves, and not for large pressure groups to impose their will upon. Very simple ; it's a Woman's right to choose - Leave her alone.

Death Penalty & Criminality : I think it should be completely abolished. The expense to both implement and defend it is way to costly for the tax payers. The Death penalty only perpetuates the need for more lawyers, judges, bureaucrats and litigation. And in my humble opinion, that's the last thing this country needs.

Regan said to Gorbachev ''Tear down that wall'' I say to Bush and his cronies in congress ''tear down those prisons'' They're wayyyy too much of burden on tax payers.

I put the prison lobby right up there with that of the trial lawyers and insurance industry lobbies - They're all sucking the livlihood out of honest hard-working Americans.

I would be in favor of moving to a system much like Singapore has and bring back corporal punishment for minor crimes and low level offenders.

I say twenty lashes in a public square with a bull whip would be much more of a deterrent than three free meals, a warm bed, and free medical care {all compliments of the tax payers} for repeated middle and small time offenders.

Social security and Privatizing it : Social security is pyramid scheme and should be completely abolished.

With that said, my first step towards fixing current system would be to first make sure that all monies brought into the system, be those that are completely dedicated. In other words, no more Congress robbing Peter to pay Paul.

My second step would be to encourage those that felt comfortable, to invest their money, whether it be the market, municipal bonds, precious metals, treasury notes, etc. - Yes I'm all for making it private. But for those that don't want to, they can rest on their laurels.

My third and most important step, would be to completely skeletonize the federal work force that both administrates it and encumbers it. I'd make the ''skeleton'' more efficient and put and end to the redundancy that encompasses the whole system.

I'd put both upper management and middle management back to work. I'd completely eliminate all ''assistant'' positions. No more sitting around with long lunch breaks and shuffling work off to assistants.

If the public employee unions call for a strike, I'd pull a Regan and fire them all and bring in scab workers.

Under a more privatized and efficient management scheme, the recipients would enjoy greater benefits and everyone wouldn't have to hear about how dogmatic the system is on the nightly news.

OK, let's assume, for the sake of argument, that the gods of Olympus really were aliens. What happened during the long dry spell between ancient Greece and the 1950's? Where did the aliens go?

And which ancient gods were aliens, and which merely human constructions? Were the Hindu gods aliens too? The Chinese gods? The Norse gods? The Mesoamerican gods?

OK - am gonna take a different stand now.

- And I am not even gonna start on the rights of a child -
(I am not anti abortion btw)

It may be the womans body - but it comes down to responsibility. Don't fancy this outcome? Don't do it then and be totally risk aware - what about the fathers 'rights'? What about a woman who gets pregnant - doesn't want the child - wants an abortion, but the man wants a child, and is willing to take the child completely after birth? How comes he gets no say? Surely it takes two to tango?

And this is assuming the pregnancy is not a danger to the woman.

Peace and Love
