Status: offline 		To a degree i agree with you Krissi, they should be able to do business in the native language (american) but saying that if it is a predominantly mexican area then the native tongue would be Spanish, no?
I wouldnt dream of going somewhere foriegn and expecting them to speak english.

Status: offline 		I used to have a friend from Turkey who tried to explain the language to me ... he admitted that it is nearly impossible to learn. That's true sadism there.

I notice that the Middle Eastern and/ Chinese people who run businesses here speak very good English and I must say, that means alot to me because I cannot imagine how difficult it must be for them. One Chinese restaurant in town, the waitress there can speak English, Chinese and Spanish fluently and is learning Italian!!! amazing.

Good for you!  This reminds me of a friend who is a blond, blue-eyed Spaniard.  She had gotten into an accident with a car of Mexican girls.  While waiting for the police, they were chattering about what they are going to say to get out of a ticket..my friend just listened silently and when they , too, were planning on how they were going to mess with the "white bitch"- she just smiled and said "try it and loose".  Same reaction.  So folks, NEVER judge a book by it's cover!

Status: offline 		I went back in there today and told the boss "who just happens to speak English" lol what happened and she was so appologetic...seems that it's a case of the youth today more than it is a racial thing..alot of the youth of today have no respect..she gave me a free home made ice cream..it's coconut icecream put inside a coconut shell and it's DELICIOUS along with a coupon for $20 in groceries....now, she didn't have to do that but she won a customer

I can not believe that a person who can not read, write or speak english can get a drivers license in this country! You can have an interpreter with you to take the test!
Well FUCK ME! I guess that interpreter stays with them all the time to read them road signs and to help communicate with the cop that pulls them over for doing something stupid because the interpreter read the sign wrong.
That has always just roasted My grapes!

Granted, some of the comments and reactions would just fuel the fire rather than end it. And my own response is factual - the common reaction here in THc is to call the Health Department or the Fire Inspector - "'cause sumthin's gotta be wrong wit' dem fur-in-ersss..."

In my case, I've been lucky enough to have episodes (and there have been quite a few) like Krissi's end with mutual respect, mostly because I can tie everyone back together using a shared passion expressed in the same language... Most of the time it's food, but it's been things as simple as living in the same neighborhood or football. Everyone comes away liking each other more. And they have my business and I often get great deals on products.

Why else do you think I know how to order a pound of ground beef in 10 different languages? ;)

Status: offline 		I don't mind if someone cannot speak proper English when they first come to this country- I admire those who come here and are attempting to learn the language and I will do my best to talk to them..it's the ones who have lived here for so long with no desire to learn the language that bothers me!

I've tried to learn spanish, just cause Pa said I should since he thinks it'd be useful. But I never got a grip on it.

Status: offline 		i may not speak spanish.. but i can usually figure out what's being said and i just cuss them out in spanish.. or have a friend or Master speak to them.. i am very well protected by family and friends

Status: offline 		miss satan (my grown UM) is a kitchen manager at a buffet place.  she has 4 guys that work back there who are hispanic.  she's also very pretty, and has generous curves.  apparently the guys were talking about her butt one day....and she understands a LOT more than she speaks.... turned around and told them "you know, i CAN understand what you're saying, and if i hear it again, there WILL be writeups.  stick to work, please."

each of them came up to her during the rest of her shift and apologised....and have watched themselves since then.  never assume!

kitten, who is proud of her kiddo...and cant believe she's gonna be 25!
