In my case, Michael, I try to be polite by not pointing out someone else's flaws.  Some people want stuff like that pointed out, and other's don't.  Hard to know what's best, but that's my motivation behind not saying something.

what really gets me is, dispite those that originally create a thread and misspell the topic, so many out there just let the misspelling go on. i've tried to go around and correct the misspellings as best i can, but then others continue to respond to the thread (skipping over my post with the correct spelling) and allow the typoed topic to go on. what does this say about those who pride themselves in spelling or whatever? maybe i care more about others than most.

Dispite = Despite

Typoed = Typo’d

i = I

Most importantly capital letters for beginning of sentences.

Personally I’m joking when I correct peoples spelling as mine is far from perfect in the raw. People have pointed this out to me and I kind of feel why didn’t they read the message I wrote and only wanted to concentrate on the misspelling?

edited because I got i = I the wrong way around. [:D]

Yes, that's certainly a horrible tragedy.

It says that they're not the spelling police.

Maybe you're just a hypocrite or trying to give yourself a little self-esteem boost by pointing out where someone else made an incredibly trivial mistake.  With the number of spelling, grammar and typing errors in your own posts, perhaps you should just focus on your own mistakes for a while.  Then, once you can manage to make it through a day without mangling the English language, you can direct your newfound spelling prowess upon the teeming illiterate masses.

IcySub -> RE: Spelling and online... (8/17/2007 2:36:59 PM)

I point out a person's spelling errors regardless if they don't mind it. A spell checker isn't hard to obtain online so there's no excuse for incorrect spelling. If I come across a dom's (where english is their first language) profile that has atrocious misspellings, I pass them up. If they can't spell, what good are they to me?

I suppose they would only have caring and imagination in their favour oh well maybe your perfect Dom can be found at your local high school.

I have to admit, this is a pet peeve of mine as well.  I think it stems from the fact that in the 5th grade I lost the countywide spelling bee (and a chance to go to the state spelling championship)  by ONE WORD!!!
*sniff sniff*  It's haunted me ever since[image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m17.gif[/image].. (for real though)

It just freaking BUGS me when intelligent people misspell words!!
I truly wish they had a spell check directly on the post editor..
SM chooses to indulge my 'quirk' by allowing me to correct  misspelled words in his posts from time to time..  (He is so good to me!!)

Trust me, there're much better things to be learning out there than memorizing spelling.

I agree. Also, I don't particularily care if my spelling is wrong/odd. Ditto for others, unless it is horrible or constant netspeak [sm=rage.gif].

seeksfemslave -> RE: Spelling and online... (8/17/2007 3:02:17 PM)

I agree with the OP. While it is true that every body makes spelling mistakes at some time or another I do think that some of the examples we see in the posts are really bad. I dont recall having censured anybody tho'.
To those who say "so what" ...well I think its better to strive for quality rather than accept that which could be improved. For those who simply cant spell, dont worry and keep posting.

What I did do is ban bad language  and as of this moment the usual suspects are not obeying my law lol

FullCircle -> RE: Spelling and online... (8/17/2007 3:09:39 PM)

If people didn’t misspell words and make their own up English would become as limited as French and not evolve. Shakespeare couldn’t spell either by our standards.

FullCircle -> RE: Spelling and online... (8/17/2007 3:11:51 PM)

The limitedness of French I am solely basing on the number of words in each language. We have more words for the same things than they do because we allow people the freedom to bring more words into popular usage.

Complete and utter bollocks.

Aneirin -> RE: Spelling and online... (8/17/2007 5:16:42 PM)

Reading a post before submission usually picks up typos,that or the preview post option,two chances before the edit.

Uh huh. Sorry's good, but I would like to see it improve nonetheless. While nothing stops you from using 'sub speech', I think it would be good if you were as adamant about correct usage of capitalisation as you are about spelling.

Did I make myself clear? STOMP!

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Spelling and online... (8/17/2007 5:19:05 PM)

*I* personally dont care if my spelling is bad.  I am a lousy typist, and I admit to it. If someone else has isues with my typing abilities, let them pass me over.  There is so much far ore important than someone's ability to type.  I have met amazingly brilliant people who type so quickly because they think faster than the words come out that their writing is aweful. However, they speak beautifully.
Anyone who needs me to clarify something, I will do so.  But I am not going to drive myself insane for a few switched letters and whatnot.
Especially *ahem* Mikey when your OP bitching about it is riddled with spelling mistakes.
Love me, accept my typing.

I am sure that if Shakespeare were alive today, he would have a high standard when it comes to spelling. Your problem is you have no standards. Using your logic, Ebonics is the epitome of communication.

[:D].....I was going to ask BSB if she remembered the word she misspelled.  I lost the county-wide spelling bee in 3rd grade.  The word was "pastor."  Then, I won first place every year through 7th grade.  That year I went to the state level where it was televised.  Out of nearly 40 competitors, I made it to 8th and then missed the word "myriad."  I've never forgotten the correct spelling of either word.  Nice to know I'm not the only one........luci

i know this will probably be pulled by the MODs, but i thought i would try it anyway.

i know alot of us (myself included) are hit by the typo-bug from time to time. what bothers me most is, even when people realize something is misspelled (like in a topic), they just let it go. it's a bit of a pet peeve of mine and i, myself, try to catch my own typos (provided the *edit* option is still available).

to me, this kinda promotes illiteracy and mistakes. maybe i'm wrong for pointing it out, but i'm a brat, so i tend to say what others won't.

how can we learn if nobody lets us know what mistake we've made and are given the chance to correct those mistakes?

just my 2 cents worth.

<Edited to correct my own misspelling in the topic>

<Edited again for yet another typo...thanks Katy for setting me straight...*smiles*>

Aside from the blue adjustment above...Capitals at each sentence heading?

Both spellings are acceptable: I write from an Anglo-English perspective [:D].

How many words in the English language taken from the French language vs the amount of words in the French language taken from the English language? The French are purists and they control how their language develops to the point that barely any development takes place at all. That is a well known fact. Your point of dispute may be that controlling a language in such a way is a good thing I don’t know.

Number of words in the English Language around 800,000 but in French around 100,000. How many ways can you say ‘cat’ and mistake it with something else?
