Maybe because the word limit was a minimum of 1000 words so I had to pad it out a bit.

The most annoying word is ‘because’
The word that gives nothing away is ‘Indeed’

I’ve heard people here say they hadn’t heard of the word ‘whilst’ and I have to admit I can’t find a good reason to use this word instead of ‘while’. I do use it though because it’s what flows from my mind to my hand. Nobody says Meanwhilst do they?

As for not wanting to summarise what you hope to find at the start of a paper I would simply say that if you had a lot of papers to look through you want to have some way of picking the ones that will interest you. You want some kind of outline at the start so that then you can read more into it. You often find that just because someone says what they hope to prove at the start they often find out something else for themselves entirely. If a paper is written this way you can see how the author changed their thinking as they wrote it. This was obviously truer before word processors came about; now you can add bits and shuffle things around.

Status: offline 		While and whilst mean the same thing. In the UK whilst is still in common use where as in the USA it is thought to be somewhat old fashioned. Other words with -st also seem to be in decline. such as amidst and amongst. One word i like which is hardly seen is spelt, spelled seems to be more common.

Pleads guilty to using "indeed" a lot...

Status: offline 		I have seen non-American doctors write "Thrice weekly" instead of "three times a week" on Rx's.  I suppose "once, twice, thrice" is more acceptable English that sounds funny here, like "whilst".
