I get My website hosted on multiple OC3s for $35/year including My domain renewal. I do not use My ftp server very much, just to grab files off it when I am on site doing a service call. I do not need more bandwidth than what I have. The other functions that I use My server for really do not require much in the way of bandwidth. I would like to download faster than 310k/sec but it really is no big deal to Me if I do not.

An OC3 is a 155 mbps fiber or dark fiber line for enterprise applications. An OC3 connection can also be used for point to point access and is a viable solution for companies looking to resell bandwidth. Depending on location and OC3 provider availability, your full OC3 service will normally be priced between $15,000 and $100,000 monthly. gets wet and moans I could come up with tons of things to do with that much bandwidth....... ;) would you be interested in hosting a bdsm shoutcast server gratis ? )

One of My suppliers is selling off used dual and quad Xeon servers really cheap. I plan on buying one and upgrading the RAM to 8 GB or so and adding in a RAID 5 array. I thought of going SCSI, but with the advent of SATA2 and 10,000 RPM drives there does not seem to be a lot of point to it when you consider the price/performance ratio. My WD Raptor 74GB 10,000 RPM will smoke most SCSI drives that are available and offers a decent duty cycle to boot. Put four of those in a RAID 5 array and I should be laughing for a fraction of the cost of comparable performance in SCSI. The only problem I can see with that is if I am getting too many concurrent requests and saturate the SATA bus. The SCSI such as the Maxtor Atlas 10k V should offer Me more bandwidth in that scenario. After that My current server will be demoted to a print or file server or something like that. I have not decided for sure yet.

grins and I remember thinking my system was smokin.. when I had an amd k6-300 and could burn a backup to cd (granted this was for home/desktop use) I hope you seriously consider the shoutcast server , that would be great, you could even dj and show off that cute .ca accent ~eh~

What you say? Everything in due time, eh. [:D] I do plan on getting to it sooner or later, and certainly a shoutcast server could be considered, but others would have to DJ it. I just do not have the time to look after it. I ended up giving up My chatroom and community because I just do not have the time to sit down and babysit everybody. Well, let Me see how it goes and W/we can go from there. I know it will not be tomorrow or anything, but when I have some time I will look into upgrading the server.

Alrighty then...the computer has been assembled and initial software installed. I'm still using the old beast right now but tomorrow hope to have "My Precious' connected online. So far, a very educational experience with a few frustrating moments. I have the CPU and RAM clock speeds at something stable for now. The folks at OCZ (who make the RAM) have suggested I let the sticks burn in for a couple weeks before tightening them up. I also need to ramp up my CPU to its full 2.6 Mhz capacity at that time. Overclocking is an art it seems. So far, so good! anthrosub

Finally up and running on the net! So far...a very fast PC (and I haven't even tuned it yet!). I suspect once I start setting the RAM to higher clock speeds and increase the frequency of my CPU, there may be some instability to deal with. Anyway, it's been a lot of fun so far and a great feeling to know I built it myself. anthrosub
