Hi all-- Uncontrolled nuclear reactions can happen without big booms; they result in Xray and neutron flux that would be pretty local, in this case, though very difficult to deal with from a health point of view. (For instance, workers may only be allowed 10 minutes in the area; the time depends on the strength of the radioactivity). The thing that can really make it dangerous is if there are other fissionable materials in range of that neutron flux. Sometimes enough mass results for an explosion; that can happen with a change of volume (differently shaped containers, for instance). Now, in the semiconductor industry, a "spill" was only a spill if the chemicals made it to the outside plumbing or outside the facility into the ground. thornhappy
