Owner59 -> Another disgusting douche (8/21/2007 9:24:12 PM)

Only a republican would say something like this.

Long Sentence Not Justified for Michael Vick
Tuesday August 21 2007 @ 7:48 pm by Optimistic Patriot
I love animals.  I’d have more if I thought my wife wouldn’t decapitate me; however, the Michael Vick case is baffling to me.  Yes, why a man with so much to lose would get involved with something so seedy and dangerous is beyond me.  I don’t pretend to understand what motivates or makes him tick.  He’s an adult and should face the consequences of his actions.  And no, I don’t believe the prosecution is racially motivated.  Even camera hogs Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton haven’t jumped in to defend him.
What has me baffled is the disproportionate nature of his punishment.  The man is facing 5 years in jail and the loss of millions of dollars.  But when you look at other, far more serious cases, you really have to wonder if the punishment fits the crime.
NFL defensive end Leonard Little only got 90 days for killing a woman while he was driving under the influence.  Ray Lewis was involved in a homicide, but didn’t get much of a sentence.  Mary Winkler, who was convicted of manslaughter in the death of her husband, spent about 60 days in custody with the vast majority of those in a mental-health facility.  The judge and jury bought her post traumatic stress disorder argument, but if it was so serious she killed her husband because of it, is 60 days long enough to cure it?
Does this really seem like justice?  If you aren’t a PETA member, doesn’t it bother you just a bit that these people were involved in far more serious crimes but got what amounted to a slap on the wrist?  Personally, I’m pulling for Vick to get the minimum.  What he did was wrong, but there’s a real problem when he’s going to do much more time than killers.

He killed cute wittle puppy-wuppy dogs!

Seriously, I think most of us – even if we are not particularly religious – consider humans to be somehow tainted, as if original sin (or perhaps the sin of being human) still clings to us. We may feel some emotion when we hear about strangers who are victims of deliberate cruelty but we tend to feel more outrage when it is animals who are victims of our cruelty – they are seen as more innocent than humans. Our sense of outrage calls not just for punishment, but revenge.

If Vic did kill people instead of dogs, I’m willing to bet that more people would be apologists for him.

Still, the article does pose a good question. Looked at objectively, should killing dogs get you more time in prison that killing people can get you?

luckydog1 -> RE: Another disgusting douche (8/21/2007 11:17:28 PM)

In America there were laws against animal abuse before there were laws against child abuse.  The first legal rescue of an abused child was under animal welfare laws....or maybe that is just an urban myth.

I bet the vast majority of Vick's defenders (as well as those most wanting him punished to the full extent of the law, which illustrates yet another of those huge splits in your party) are going to be Democrats/left leaning, regardless of what some blog trying to be outrageous for hits says.

"Only a republican would say something like this".

And the problem is?

I guess I'm a douche, then, and need to change my voters registration from Democrat to Republican. I don't necessarily agree with what the guy said, in total, but I don't see it as some wierd, heartless opinion, either.

vegas0623 -> RE: Another disgusting douche (8/22/2007 4:24:01 AM)

He is an intelligent educated man that knew what he was doing was WRONG and yet he had no conscience or empathy towards those defenseless creatures...he did what he did for amusement, as a sport...it certainly wasn't because he needed the money. I don't think his punishment is too harsh, I just think the other people that was mentioned got off too easy. I have zero tolerance for animal or child cruelty.

Now, you might be on to something, there.

I hate cruelty like that, too, but the one that makes me angriest, is when someone elderly is hurt. That's the button-pusher.

Archer -> RE: Another disgusting douche (8/22/2007 6:07:06 AM)

Thje first thing is you have to eliminate the false premise.
Vic's punishment is more than a murderers, means his crime was worse.

The falseness is simply in the idea that the discrepancy has anything at all to do with Vic's crime.
Which way would you think Republicans would have moved the sentances if it were up to them?
Would they
A. Lessen Vic's sentance to reflect it's less serious nature?
B. Would they increase the murderer's/ manslaughterer's sentances to reflect something more serious than 60 to 90 days?
C. would they sentance them all to Death, LOL

Yup. That’s what it really comes down to. Still, he isn’t getting off scot free. He has effectively destroyed his career and while some celebrities can bounce back from some "gaffs" I don’t see that happening here. He’ll probably end up playing golf with O.J.

luckydog1 -> RE: Another disgusting douche (8/22/2007 10:14:48 AM)

Marc, that was in reference to owner59 and his party, not yours

camille65 -> RE: Another disgusting douche (8/22/2007 10:45:49 AM)

Sorry but this really bugs me. Why do you use that particular word?
'Douche'?
Is it supposed to be nasty because it is for feminine hygiene?

kittinSol -> RE: Another disgusting douche (8/22/2007 10:48:39 AM)

Yep. That's why. But nothing stops us from creating a whole new range of insults based on male hygiene products.

Suggestion box is now open [:D].

I'm sorry, but just because the author is a self-described Republican, doesn't mean that this article has anything to do with politics in any way.  It's just an opinion and I am certain there are probably Democrats and Independents and Libertarians and whomever else we got out there that will agree with the author, just as there are those of all persuasions and will disagree.

LotusSong -> RE: Another disgusting douche (8/22/2007 12:28:56 PM)

What Vick did was not:

An Accident
Done under the influence
An act of Passion
The result of poor toilet training (as far as we know)

What he did was the result of arrogance and greed.  (as if $35 million wasn't enough)

Do I think he should spend a second in prison? No.  I want him bathed in gravy and tossed into his dog fighting ring with his remaining pit bulls so that HE has to be forced to fight to survive.  And if he doesn't fight hard enough, we can either hang, drown or electrocute him.  The pit bulls are probably going to be euthanized if not claimed.. so why not give them a fighting chance for a change.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Another disgusting douche (8/22/2007 12:57:43 PM)

I am probably going to get hammered for saying this, but here goes....What is the difference between dog fighting and rodeos or even horse racing?  I am not an animal rights nut by any means.  I think dog fighting is disgusting.  But I have a hard time seeing why one particular sport that exploits animals is any worse than another.  In my own state, there is a law against bear wrestling.  I have never actually seen a bear wrestling match, but apparently they were quite common at county fairs before I was born.  Rodeos are still common at the county fairs I have attended, and they are basically animal wrestling events.  I am sorry if I see a little hypocracy in that.  I see the same hypocracy when it comes to dog fighting, cock fighting, and bull fights being illegal and considered barbaric, while sports like horse and dog racing, rodeos, etc are considered perfectly acceptable.

camille65 -> RE: Another disgusting douche (8/22/2007 1:01:28 PM)

No hammer from me.
I do see a difference. The difference I see is that dog fighting is intentionally pitting (no pun intended honest) animals against each other with the end result being maiming or death.
