I take it that he meant why is the outrage selective?

Keeping animals in cramped cages and poking them with whips should be outrageous as well, if keeping animals from being exploited is the goal, but some forms of exploitation are rationalized away as 'sport' or fashion.

I am probably going to get hammered for saying this, but here goes....What is the difference between dog fighting and rodeos or even horse racing?  I am not an animal rights nut by any means.  I think dog fighting is disgusting.  But I have a hard time seeing why one particular sport that exploits animals is any worse than another.  In my own state, there is a law against bear wrestling.  I have never actually seen a bear wrestling match, but apparently they were quite common at county fairs before I was born.  Rodeos are still common at the county fairs I have attended, and they are basically animal wrestling events.  I am sorry if I see a little hypocracy in that.  I see the same hypocracy when it comes to dog fighting, cock fighting, and bull fights being illegal and considered barbaric, while sports like horse and dog racing, rodeos, etc are considered perfectly acceptable.

I don't support nor attend any of the animal exploitations you have listed above.   It's time to wake up world.

And yet another 'Republican' speaks out.

quote:

As a society, we should aid in his rehabilitation and welcome a new Michael Vick back into the community without a permanent loss of his career in football," said R.L. White, president of the NAACP's Atlanta chapter. "We further ask the NFL, Falcons, and the sponsors not to permanently ban Mr. Vick from his ability to bring hours of enjoyment to fans all over this country."

What Vick did was not:

An Accident
Done under the influence
An act of Passion
The result of poor toilet training (as far as we know)

What he did was the result of arrogance and greed.  (as if $35 million wasn't enough)

Do I think he should spend a second in prison? No.  I want him bathed in gravy and tossed into his dog fighting ring with his remaining pit bulls so that HE has to be forced to fight to survive.  And if he doesn't fight hard enough, we can either hang, drown or electrocute him.  The pit bulls are probably going to be euthanized if not claimed.. so why not give them a fighting chance for a change.

All great points LotusSong. They are perhaps to obvious for some consider.

A good question is: why pick Vick to make this morbid comparison? Why make morbid comparisons at all!?!
I hear right-wing talk shows go into questions like this a lot.

Usually you don`t hear the background details, just "hey that murderer got ten years, and  that rapist got 20,something`s wrong w/ the system!"

Never any context or insight, just the blind leading the blind, down a dark path, into confusion and despair over our legal system.

When it comes to explaining why "Scooter"Libby, isn`t a criminal,right-wingers are fuck`n "experts"on the law.LOL

No doubt you`ve been to the rodeo, and maybe to a dog race(or seen one on TV).

For sure, you haven`t seen a dog fight or the river of cruelty ,that goes along with this barbarism.

You wouldn`t say such a thing if you did.

Hopefully this story enlightens people to what dogs, and many other critters, go through.

I googled  "dog fighting" for ya, take a gander....

http://64.233.167.99/search?hl=en&q=dog+fighting&btnG=Google+Search

BTW,I won`t hammer you.All animal cruelty, whether mild or extreme, should be addressed.Rodeos ,the circus and dog racing have  all vastly improved their "acts".And it was because of public exposure to the conditions, that anything would have ever changed.

No hammer from me.
I do see a difference. The difference I see is that dog fighting is intentionally pitting (no pun intended honest) animals against each other with the end result being maiming or death.

NControlofU -> RE: Another disgusting douche (8/22/2007 7:55:27 PM)

Douche is the French word for shower.  Douche is also an abreviated form of douchebag that is American slang from way back for a low-life, idiot or jerk.  It has nothing to do with female hygiene.  It has to do with the empty rubber bag that in the old days was filled with water and and used to shower off, not with the modern douche products.

Sorry but this really bugs me. Why do you use that particular word?
'Douche'?
Is it supposed to be nasty because it is for feminine hygiene?

Thats an easy one to answer Thompson, in all the human activites the participants give informed consent.  In all of the animal ones, there is no consent given.  People (some of us) enjoy risking thier lives for sport.

Which brings us back to bearwrestling....[:D]

luckydog:
What you propose as an answer is in actuality a false premise.  Animals by their very nature are incapable of giving informed consent.  Humans, while capable of giving informed consent, are not, in the main, informed when they give their consent.

Okay I'm going to make a parallel that will get me flamed, but it's chilly in Seacoast New Hampshire this morning so I can deal with a few flames licking up my backside... here it goes. The story below appeared in my local paper last week.

quote:

John Lounge, 69, is accused of leaving Coco, his 5-year-old male Chihuahua, in his van for a half hour while running errands during the afternoon of Aug. 3 with temperatures hovering around 93 degrees.

Lounge was arrested by police Wednesday after an investigation revealed the dog died from the heat and not from any other ailments or conditions, according to court documents.

After Lounge returned to his van, he found Coco unresponsive, although he claimed he left the windows down and kept ice water in the van for the dog, according to court records. Lounge attempted to cool off the dog by laying him on the ground in the Home Depot parking lot and dumping a gallon of water on him. When that didn't work, he tried using a fan to revive his pet.

Home Depot employees who witnessed Lounge's attempts to revive Coco urged him to bring the dog to a veterinarian, which Lounge did before police arrived.

According to an affidavit filed by Portsmouth police patrolman William Dubois, Lounge brought Coco to VCA Animal Medical Center, where the dog was declared dead on arrival.

"The dog's temperature was determined 'too high' to read according to the thermometer," wrote Dubois. Veterinarian Katherine Bouras told the officer the thermometer does not read anything over 107.5 degrees."

According to a study done by the national nonprofit Animal Protection Institute, a car on a 92-degree day can hover close to 110 degrees even with four cracked windows and can rise 35 degrees within 30 minutes.

"That's because a car acts like a greenhouse, trapping the sun's heat," said the study, published on its Web site. Lounge told witnesses and police he only left the dog inside the van for five to 10 minutes, but surveillance tapes of the Home Depot parking lot showed Lounge left the dog unattended for a half hour, police said.

Lounge was released on $3,000 personal recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Portsmouth District Court Oct. 2 to answer the charge.

Should this man have been arrested?

Ok thompson, so you do not know what the term "false premise" means, and are shouting big words you don't comprehend.....why?
