Thank you e01n. I obviously missed the reference in the first site. I didn't know about the second site, so it's been bookmarked.

Unfortunately, because of the sodium nitrite, SPAM is officially on my hard limit list for foods.

BTW - any foodie worth their salt (or sodium nitrite) needs to get the new USDA NUT database - just up on their server this week... I like how they break out the fats by relative mass in addition to saturation levels. Way cool from a food chemistry/ultra geek standpoint.

The nutritiondata site is a webapp version of it with some other features - very cool if you don't need all of the NUT.

Look, someone is ignorant enough to say that there's no way to know what's in SPAM in my presence - I'm going to post in excruciating detail *exactly* what's in it as proven through the efforts paid for by our American tax dollars. If you're ignorant around me in *anything*, I will do my best to cure you of said ignorance.

If you choose to remain ignorant, I'll start by saying "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness..." with the requisite following actions... in my mind.

Look, it's simple: SPAM is good food. And it's perfectly fine if you don't like it. But don't malign it from a position of ignorance and then expect *not* to be called on it.

The thread is titled "I love Spam!" What part of that isn't clear to you?

And no, KMsAngel - this isn't personal and it isn't about you. It's more a general corporate bitching out...

Don't be - ignorance is simply a temporary state and one that's easily left. Often with great benefit.

Deliberately remaining ignorant... that's another story.

See, Sappa... you now know that SPAM and you aren't a good combo. Which is better than before, no? Someone handed you a SPAMwich a couple of days ago and you'd be wondering "Who are these nice people and why are they looking at me in surgical masks?" without knowing why... And now you do.

Simply by way of illustration, mind.

ah, ok. didn't actually see it as an attack on me til u brought it up! for a fraction of a second there i thought i might have to find some devon (equivalent to bologna) and beat u with it. you're safe now, though. my dislike of it probably springs from the fact that being one of 8 children in a one income family, we got all sorts of lovely things. government orange cheese, squicky margarine, spam, powdered milk, salmon loaf (we were brought up ctholic). none of which i really touch anymore.

Which goes back to my point in discussing the history of SPAM - it's a useful food, it's pretty good (to some people) and it's very affordable. Do I eat SPAM daily? Hell no. Do I want to? Again, Fuck no. But is it something I'll have in my house? Definitely. Will I eat it willingly? Yes.

YMMV. That's the beauty of being alive...

Saw the newest ad campaign from Hebrew National about what makes their hot dogs different. And it was good... I'm going to rip it off mercilessly when explaining cuts of meat to people.

Why it's relevant to SPAM: SPAM is made from *exactly* 2 parts of the pig - the shoulder (aka Boston Butt or "pork pot roast") and the ham. Equivalent in humans to the muscles in the shoulder joint area and in the thigh. Hot dogs and luncheon meats (bologna, mass market salami, etc.), on the other hand, tend to come from bits and pieces from all over the pig but rarely from the ham, shoulder, loin, rib or belly. These trimmings are mixed with other animal meats that aren't from "marketable" parts.

Thus, I'll eat a SPAM sandwich or a kosher hot dog well before I'll eat most lunch meat. It's the main reason I avoid Subway & Quiznos...

Sorry luv - this isn't a Python bit...

This is a Python bit:
Hungarian: [reading from a English-Hungarian dictionary] I vill not buy this record, it is scratched.
Tobacconist: Sorry?
Hungarian: I vill not buy this record, it is scratched.
Tobacconist: Uh, no, no, this... uh... tobacconist.
Hungarian: Ah! I vill not buy this *tobacconist*, it is sratched.
Tobacconist: Uh, no, no, tobacco... um... cigarettes.
Hungarian: Ja! "Ci-ga-ret-ta"! Uh... My hovercraft if full of eels.
[pause]
Hungarian: My hovercraft
[motions "cigarettes"]
Hungarian: is full of eels.
[motions "matches"]
Tobacconist: Oh! Matches! Matches.
Hungarian: Ja! Ja, ja. Uh... do you *WA*nt... do you *WA*nt to come back to my place? Bouncy, bouncy!
Tobacconist: I don't think you're using that right.
Hungarian: You great poohft.
Tobacconist: Uh, that will be 66 please.
Hungarian: If I said you had beautiful body, vould you hold it against me? I... I am no longer infected.
Tobacconist: M-may I?
Hungarian: Ja! Ja!
[gives book to Tobacconist]
Tobacconist: Costs 6 and 6... costs 6 and... ah, here we are!
[Tobacconist says something in Hungarian, causing the Hungarian to punch him in the face. A police officer comes rushing into the store]
Police Officer: What's going on here then?
Hungarian: [to police officer] You have beautiful thighs.
Police Officer: What?
Tobacconist: He hit me!
Hungarian: Drop your panties, Sir William, I cannot wait till lunch time.
Police Officer: [angry] RIGHT!
[Hungarian dragged away by police officer]
Hungarian: My nipples explode with delight!

Another one, offered as shameless bump - but with appropriate content:
Kenny Lust: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the refreshment room here at Bletchley. My name is Kenny Lust and I'm your compère for tonight. You know, once in a while it is my pleasure, and my privilege, to welcome here at the refreshment room, some of the truly great international artists of our time. And tonight we have one such artist. Ladies and gentlemen, someone whom I've always personally admired, perhaps more deeply, more strongly, more abjectly than ever before. A man... well, more than a man, a god, a great god, whose personality is so totally and utterly wonderful my feeble words of welcome sound wretchedly and pathetically inadequate. Someone whose boots I would gladly lick clean until holes wore through my tongue, a man who is so totally and utterly wonderful, that I would rather be sealed in a pit of my own filth than dare tread on the same stage with him! Ladies and gentlemen... the incomparably superior human being, Harry Fink!
Man: [offstage] He can't come!
Kenny Lust: Never mind, he's not all he's cracked up to be.

Spam just makes me wanna barf....but then, there is no way it would make it inside my house anyway. We tend to stay away from processed anything, If it comes in a can, bottle, or box, Sir refuses to buy it. 90% of the edibles in our house come from the local butcher or the produce stand or our own garden. I mean sure, we occasioanlly spoil ourselves and eat out, but normally if we do that its sushi or a steakkhouse and it doesnt happen often. We tend to stay away from chain resteraunts too.....the stand alone places are normally better. Although we did go to the Melting Pot last weekend, but only because some friends from out of town wanted to try it.

Despite SPAM being on my food hard limit list, I have enjoyed it in the past. I don't think it's as awful as most people make it out to be. My problem is with the additives (nitrates) that go into it, but then again, that's the reason why a lot of foods are on my hard limit list. *sighs*

Oh, nifty feature of http://www.nutritiondata.com/ - you can throw a component at the database and get a list of hits.

So, if you're in the unenviable situation of needing to avoid nitrates/nitrites, you can put that in and get a full list of "hard-limit" foods courtesy of the USDA. And yes, SPAM is there...

SPAM - always a gluten-free food...
