Why are people so offended by people who legally own firearms?

Why are people so offended by people who disagree with the legality of firearms? I'm not offended by people who own firearms: I think it's sad, but I'm not personally offended by it. Until the next cunt shoots me or my family.

It's not because it's legal that it's right.

Are you rattling everyone's chain again kSol? [8|]

Because, alot of people believe if they are against something everyone should be. And no one should be allowed to do so. However while I am a proud gun owner I don't tell people they should own guns, so stop telling me because you don't do so to not own guns. Gun control is about control. In a country where people are not allowed to own guns, how would they prevent a government from completely taking over their lifes and becoming a dictatorship? Oh, I forgot most people like the government to think for them...it's easier.

It's not because they're out there to get me that I'm paranoid [X(].

"Hunting: the unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable." (Oscar Wilde - I'm on an Oscar roll, ROFL).

People who own guns aren't ready for a revolution: they're too busy having fun at target shooting barbecues for that.

Oh forgot to add, I don't hunt but my husband does, and we eat what he kills. It not just for the sport. I would much rather eat meat my husband kills and butchers than animals that have been injected with hormones.

I own a P229 and have a carry permit, so I'm one of the paranoids. The foster dad here must be highly paranoid. He has his own fucking army ... including his own working WW2 tank (something called an M8). Wealthy people do strange things ... I would rather have a Ferrari.

Won't happen either. Missile defense will drop them as they fly over Canada, making them our problem... again.

Sighing... because if you ask for evidence, it means you are blind to it: it's all around you. That little thread alone will tell you more than I am able to at this point. Evidence about America being violent? It's all over the news. The statistics abound.

As for finding evidence America is paranoid... well, I'm not a sociologist: but I think it's pretty obvious when people feel they need to be armed against their own government that something is seriously wrong here.

Every study I have ever seen doesn't show America as being the most violent country or Americans being the most violent people. Excluding urban areas (usually with strict gun control laws) Americas rural population (with a higher population of gun owners) is less violent then many european countries.

Governments have killed more then 170million of thier own citizens in the 20th century. Sometimes being cautious is the smart thing to do. Governments attract people that lust for power and eventually that person will tell enough lies to get elected. How do you plan on getting rid of that person if she decides to not give up office?

Well if he had a conceled carry licence I don't think he would have that problem. He has the right to protect his gift of life he choices to use a firearm to do so, you may not.

Exactly...

"Dude, know what time it is?"

Dude looks at his watch and gets his face smashed by a well placed punch that the person asking the time knocked him out with.

Yep.  Concealed weapon permit is the way to keep oneself safe.

p.s.  I am mainly pointing out that simply owning a gun is only a small fraction of what goes in to defending one's life.

Isn't the majority of our population urban? If so, excluding them would seem to yield a fairly meaningless statistic.

Are you also excluding Europe's urban areas? If not, you're comparing apples and oranges.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Why no nation can invade America.... (8/28/2007 8:37:43 PM)

That'll be really useful in the event of an invasion.

That's true, but owning one does increase my chances of defending myself by giving me one more means of defending myself beyond using my mind, my body and my surroundings.  I'm more comfortable having one.  My home is isolated and I rely on state police that have a response rate here of over fifteen minutes.  That's a very long time if the shit is hitting the fan...whether it's from an animal or a person.

A gun also makes a woman equal to a man or men,who are up to no good.

Actually, he belongs to a group that restores WW2 vehicles. But, you never know, he may go nuts some day in a fit of random American violence, and start blowing up people's pickups.

SimplyMichael -> RE: Why no nation can invade America.... (8/28/2007 9:32:04 PM)

An M8 isn't a tank if I recall correctly, it is a six wheeled APC with a turret although I can't recall the gun but my guess would be a 37mm.   If your dad is really into restoring WWII vehicles, ask him if he knows Roy Hamilton, an old buddy of mine who has restored a lot of M20s which is the open top version of the M8, it had a ring mounted M2 .50 cal.  Great vehicles!

Owner59 -> RE: Why no nation can invade America.... (8/28/2007 9:58:20 PM)

This a vehicle I would love to own. There was a much smaller one, that held four fully equipped men.

Yes... the most armed society on the planet... the most violent society in the world... the most paranoid society ever.

Is this just a angry statement or do you have any evidence that we are the most violent or most paranoid society?

Something seems MORE wrong to me when someone would put more trust in a government than in the people the government is supposed to work for. I thought so many people disliked/distrusted our government and not our people? Not when it comes to guns, though?

Our founding documents were written to protect us from our own government more than anything else. Maybe it's because they knew what the rest of the world had and wanted something different here. Yeah, those nasty individual freedoms of ours. Where do people go when they have nothing and want to make something of themselves?

I would say that our government has still managed to evolve more into controlling it's people than our founders ever intended. If it tries to take too much freedom at once, there's outrage. If they chip away at it little by little? They got income tax passed by promising that it would never go over 2%, because that would be sinful. The founders had an idea of what our government would try to do based on what other governments have done. Many in it seem to have an elitist "We know what's better for you than you do" attitude.

Criminals don't need to break into homes to acquire guns. Steel is one of the cheapest metals on the planet due to the volume it's produced in, and CNC machining is more than readily available pretty much everywhere.

Maybe we're paranoid because we still have freedoms left TO lose!

Are you sugesting that thugs can and/or do make guns, in a machine shop(no less)?

Could you go into that a little deeper?

Where to thugs learn gun-smithing,machining,ballistics,etc.?

meatcleaver -> RE: Why no nation can invade America.... (8/28/2007 11:15:40 PM)

Er...who wants to invade the US apart from illegal immigrants from Mexico? I read somewhere that the US will be bi-lingual by the middle of the century. Nations are in a constant state of flux, they mutate through time and their fortunes rise and fall. With the rise of China, Russia and India, the US will have to learn to compromise and co-exist with other nations but why invade when the US holds nothing any other country wants? The days are gone when soldiers on the ground mean power. Look at the US's military adventures, they have only served to weaken it.
The number of guns in a country are meaningless unless their is a threat of invasion and the US is too big a land mass to hold and why would anyone want to hold it?

The biggest danger to the US is sat in the Oval office in Washington.

Thinking about it, if law breaks down in the US, the biggest danger to the US authorities will be US criminals with guns.

They are hardly safe or reliable, but it's amazing what you can accomplish with a round, a nail, a hunk of pipe and a bit of imagination.

(Don't try this at home kids)

I was watching a documentary on the tribal region in Pakistan.  Little tiny machine shops can turn out guns all day long.
