ya know, after careful consideration, it dawned on me...other countries don't "have" to invade America. all they have to do is start some crap overseas, then sit back and wait for America to go over there and (as George Carlin is so fond of saying) "swing their dicks". gotta love Carlin, he's got it all figured out.

Dont the english still hunt?

Of course! But they do so only from horseback, wearing bright clothes to give the quarry a sporting chance, and using soggy bisquits as weapons. Guns just aren't cricket!

You have that the wrong way around. The USA starts things (like the war in Afghanistan, most recently) and the rest of the world gets to clean up the mess they make.

actually, that war started with 9-11...unfortunately, America doesn't know how to quit...they seem almost as blood-thirsty as those that caused those planes to crash and kill all those people.

unfortunately, America dropped the ball on that and, in order to hide the fact they didn't get their man (Bin Laden), they took t upon themselves to try to solve Afghanistan and Iraq's problems themselves.

what I find funny is, America can barely take care of it's own internal problems...but we sure know how to take control of other countries problems.

....just out of curiosity.....the OP talked of 90 guns per 100  American citizens. Several posters here have told of their own collections numbering into the tens of guns. And a tank. But that's just a red herring tank...er......what i was aiming at is that the initial stat suggests 90% of Americans are armed, however it is clear that if some people have fifty guns then that stat is skewed. Does anyone know the actual percentage of gun ownership in the US? i suspect tank ownership is just blurring the lines a bit.........

I don't care who started it, it has been left to NATO to finish so that Bush could have his "make mah pappy proud" moment finishing GB Senoir's crap in Iraq...

Canadian soldiers face five to six times more risk of becoming casualties in Afghanistan compared to the risk faced by American troops in Iraq.

You are right about country's fixing their own shit before charging into other places to fix theirs. Same as it ever was....

The mistake being made by many in this thread is in not grasping the quote in the OP.  There are guns in great abundance all over the world.  It is the 'behind every blade of grass' that was worrying the Admiral.

...ok, the trip wires i can see....but a tank behind a blade of grass, no matter how well camoflaged, is going to be a tad obvious......even a red herring tank

Philosophy, when I lived in New Hampshire it was the exception the person who (didn't) own a firearm.
It is probably 95% gun ownership in that state.

...then it'd be a red herring tank disguised as a red herring SUV.....sooner or later you're going to forget where you left the keys.........or which blade of grass you parked it behind........

....then stats suggest that some states must have very low gun ownership in comparison..........does anyone know what the percentage is for the USA as a whole?

I thought that the figure being bandied about was one third to one half of the households in the US?

Well, figure that each side has stretched the number toward their best use, and call it 41%?

Ghita its not very common but hunting does take place here. Mainly its an upperclass sport. If the lower classes do it its called poaching.

Realy? When did they do away with the bunny bops?

It`s still classed as illegal even on Common land, and was debated in a recent bill on hunting.

One punishment used to be deportation.
