President Bush and the Transportation dept plan to open the border next week to Mexican trucks in order to streamline shipments and make it easier to move goods across the border...a requirement of NAFTA.

And this is the president that supposed to care so much about homeland security?

They are not going to get out of NAFTA. There is too much money at stake.

It isn't the truck drivers you need to worry about, it's the trucks. No brakes, lights, horns don't work, steering etc. Not a one of them would pass inspection here.

That can be dealt with at the scales, by the states.  They aren't called chicken-coops for nothing.  The truck sits there until it passes.  It IS the drivers we need to worry about.  Shit for training, drunk/stoned/amped driving, no regard for hours of operation...

On the upside though, this will be a tremendous boon to American companies that pull trucks out of the ditches in the winter...

Heretic,

The way the NAFTA treaty is written if the truck is legally licensed in Mexico the DOT cannot inspect it as they can with US licensed vehicles. Even if they could they have already stated that they have insufficient manpower for that and would not even try with current staffing levels.

The upside is that the whole program is back under congressional review and has been postponed pending the outcome.

Cyber, that doesn't matter.
Big business wanted Bush's "Amnesty" a few months ago too didn't they?
The American People blew that right out of the water decisively.
A CEO like Bill Gates gets,.. *one vote.*
You and me get,... *two votes.*

The drivers sit with the trucks and I imagine local cops will be pulling them all over for inspection immediately. Major boon in fine revenue for the towns that stop them.

Are you saying these trucks won't be subject to the scales, Rope?  This I haven't heard and find very difficult to believe.  There is certainly no such exclusion for Canadian trucks.

I find this fairly dubious as well.

NAFTA requires the DOT of the US government to let foreign truckers through the border.  NAFTA insures that each and every trucker can cross the border.  What happens after they cross the border is the jurisdiction of the state in question.   It is not the Federal government who maintains state highways and byways.  The Department of Motor Vehicles, whatever department maintains the roads, etc,  in every state has a mandate to publish and maintain standards to protect the citizens of that state.

As others have pointed out, every state truck inspection site will have a field day when the truckers pull in and get to sit there until the truck is made legal to drive on the highway.

Besides which, I suspect there will be a licensing tag issues.  Seems to me that foreign truckers have to keep and maintain tags for each state they drive through.  Licensing, etc.

Seems that this whole boondoggle is similar to the whole gay marraige thing.  It is a hollow gesture that the current administration knows will never pass muster in order to create an issue for people to argue about at election time.  Failing to inflame the public behind the non-issue du jour, the current discussion will probably center around topics like Katrina, Iraq, 9/11, Afghanistan, etc., which the administration would rather not have anybody look too closely at.

Sinergy, Bush is a Lame Duck.
There's not a lot he can actually "do" anymore either.
Especially with a Democrat controlled Congress.

The Democrats have control of congress insofar as they can determine who is on and who heads up committees.  They do not have a clear mandate and majority to enact laws and overturn vetoes without getting some help from the other side.

My point was not so much about Bush.  The Republicans cannot field a presidential candidate capable of appealing to both halves (conservatives vs. religious right) of their party, so I am not particulary worried about what happens with them on election day.  It is about the dozens of Republican congressmen and senators who are up for reelection next election day.  Unless an issue du jour can be created to deflect attention from the utter idiocy and scope of the mess those jackasses did when it was their watch, I expect we will end up with what Matt Taibbi refers to as "The End Of The Party."

There are too many Republicans up for reelection whose heads are in the noose for the nitwits in charge to not try to manufacture something to try to save their jobs.  Senators and congressional elections tend to favor (rather heavily) the incumbent.  The more seats the Republican's lose, the more money they have to spend trying to get them back.  A perfect example of this was the length of time it took the Republicans to gain control after their party got trounced during the Nixon years.

As an American living in Mexico for most of the last 14 years and driving the roads in a 40 foot bus I can say without doubt you are full of shit.

From the link provided
quote:

Under the pilot program, Mexican long haul trucking companies that have met safety, licensing, and other U.S. requirements will be allowed to operate their rigs throughout the country.

The trucks in use today on Mexican roads are either Mercedes Benz or imported Peterbuilt, IH , etc... the same trucks driven by US drivers. My personal experience is that the drivers here in Mexico are at least as skilled and professional as US truckers and lots more polite and willing to help others if they have problems.

You all will be perfectly safe welcoming the hard working well equipped truckers from Mexico.

Bill

Not going to be a problem, Sinergy.  The Repubs only have to nominate someone with more Conservative appeal, and the Dems can be relied on to nominate someone the Religious voters will be frothing at the mouth to defeat.

I doubt NAFTA will be the distraction issue.  They like simpler concepts for those, things that lend themselves to "liberals baa-ad."  Flag-burning or another poor Teri Schiavio sort of thing.

Why does it seem that everyone on this thread views the Mexican drivers differently than the US Drivers? As the poster above me states:

Amen thompsonx.

As for numbers and studies; they can be made to say anything, and you can find numerous studies that will tell you drivers from Mexico are in fact more efficient than U.S. drivers..

This and the other post about Mexicans stealing jobs are really causing me to become distraught. Is there really that much bigotry/discrimination against Mexicans here?

Troubled,

Jayson
