Stephan,

Explain why trade with communist China, a country bent on our economic destruction is fine  at the same time doing everything we can to fuck over Cuba (such as giving welfare to rich fat cat suger growers) which would be a natural trading partner of the US is also the right policy.

Communist China speaks a language we don't understand, in a world we can't comprehend.  Frankly, Americans don't want to understand people 'over there' and never have.  Thus, so long as China doesn't park missiles 80 miles off the coast of Washington DC, we're happy to exchange Big Macs and Pentiums for pink flamingos and Kalvin Cliens.

When has Cuba,Venezuela or Viet Nam ever attacked the U.S.?
When has Cuba,Venezuela or Viet Nam ever tried to overthrow the government of the U.S.?
When has Cuba,Venezuela or Viet Nam ever tried to murder the president of the U.S.?
It would seem to me that it is the U.S. who is the hostile state.

Did you sleep through History class?  Specifically WWII history?

Additionally, I think you're making the mistake that nations have morality, when they really only have interests.  You're assuming that 'Vietnam' wanted anything.   The Vietnam war was, literally, a proxy war between the US and Moscow (with the Chinese tagging along.)  The Vietnamese had a corrupt and failing capitalist, Pro-West government.  This wasn't the fault of the US, anymore than the current Iraqi government being corrupt, Pro-West, and useless.  The Chinese (with the encouragement of the Russians) saw a chance for a power grab, and started a propaganda war; trigginger a civil war.  The US saw this as setting the stage for the 'Red' Invasion of Asia.  Left to their own devices, China was simply going to set up buffer states to increase their own political dominance in Asia the same way Russia in fact did following World War II.  I suppose you don't recall the part about why Germany was split in two.  This wasn't a fear of what 'could' happen, it's a fear of what had already happened.

I don't blame China, or the former USSR for what they did.  They acted in their own interests, as nations.  The contention here, is that the interests of those nations do not include personal liberty, free speech, or social mobility; things that you regularly rail about our government not giving us.

If you doubt me, you might want to read up on what people are allowed to do on the internet, in China

Stephan,

Arguing out of both sides of your mouth is better when you do it to people who don't see both your posts.  As for Thompson, we don't always see eye to eye but your knowledge of history probably isn't as good as the bimbos he dates.

Stephan:
While your response to my post is not unclear it has nothing to do with my post.
Would you like to respond to what I stated, which you posted and failed to respond to with your post?

I suggest that China is neither the Big Red Enemy, nor Our Good Buddy.  It's a rival nation.  It does things that I strongly disagree with.  Yet it doesn't wish for our destruction; otherwise they wouldn't have that huge trading partner to buy their pink flamingos and knock off clothing.  My issue isn't that we should 'Teach China a Lesson.'  My issue is that the West would be foolish to ignore the influences that rival nations will exert, if we simply 'ignore' them.  Yet we seem determined to do both.

Barring that, if you disagree with my opinions on the historical context, saying "nuh-uh" doesn't do much for conversation.

And some people out there think this guy isn't a dictator?

Too many leftists are enamoured of 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' type of thinking (which isn't to say rightists don't also do this, but I expect more from leftists).

Heck, I agree with most of what Chavez says about Bush, but that doesn't cloud my eyes to that fact that he is a complete dictator on the home front, and I in no way support him. I have nothing but contempt for the American celebrities who allow themselves to be used as propoganda tools by the man.

Yes, I'm a little befuddled by someone embracing Chavez just to bash Bush.

He's obviously a dictator. However, compared to other countries and other leaders, he should be among the last on the list of people to worry about.
