What you bring in the OP are two entirely seperate things. To Me, being a sadist, play is one thing, punishment is another.

The word 'play' to Me is any form of fun. All of the things under the umbrella of pain in regards to BDSM fit the bill. They are enjoyed. I currently have a masochist for this particular purpose.

Punishment is something different entirely. In all truth, I hate to punish, because this brings enjoyment to neither My submissive or I. Many times, it comes in the form of restricting contact or attention. Something My submissive has difficulty coping with and will avoid at all cost.

Needless to say, I do not have to punish often. When My rules are in place, they are generally followed. My boy has no desire to have contact with Me restricted. Instead, he would much rather enjoy the reward of pain.

A simple concept, but it certainly keeps things where I want them.

I do not see how it can muddy the waters anymore than rape play or religious play.
Play is play - punishment is just what it says on the can. Mix the two together and you have a role play.

Pain play is what I used to be involved in the large majority of the time - it wasn't punishment because it was meant to cause pain, but as part of the play scene. It was to test and push my pain limits. Punishment was used when I did something wrong and it needed to be corrected - which was totally different. That was intended to cause pain in a way where I wouldn't enjoy it and never wanted it again - and believe me, it worked.

For me, punishment play is just roleplaying, like doctor/patient. One is the patient in urgent need for "examination" and the other one is the doctor doing the examination.

In punishment play, one party has been supposedly "really naughty" and in need for spanking while the other one is the punisher.

To me, punishment play has as much to do with actual punishments as doctor/patient play has to do with actual medicine.
