At least when somsone stole my pic and used it on alt they dealt with it.  Here?  Nothing.  After 5 emails to support.  And follwoing therir directions on their one email response to me.  Nothing.   Woman still has my pic on her profile here.

So although I think customer service on alt sucks, my experience is it sucks more here.  But as long as you don't need customer service...

I've been on ALT for a while b4 I discovered Collarme. As in life, there are ways around things. As some have mentioned you can write emails as a standard member. You just have to know the tricks. You can initiate an email and view profiles if you view people off the Instant Messenger. However , the Overlords will boot you if you mention a website or server. So you have to type in code ie.  Ayyy oh ell, Wahoo etc. It's a pain in the ass but what the heck, it's free.

bondage.com is alright. More people than here. Active discussion boards. You can't send direct private messages without a subscription, but you can send them basic email which I think is far more convenient anyway.

I haven't tried alt.com in many years. They used to be pretty worthless, but I've been hearing some good reports recently.

Tribe.net has a very active bdsm contingent, but it tends to be SF Bay local mostly, which is great for me, but might not be so wonderful for the rest of you all.

There's some bdsm discussion on livejournal which is pretty cool. Not a search engine and not an exclusively bdsm site, but some good discussion.

I spend most of my discussion time on tribe and lj.

The one thing I think alt has over collarme is the ability to search by distance (really handy when you're an hours drive away from 4 states).

To search by distance (within the US), click on "Sort By" on the search pane and select "distance".  If necessary, you can add or change your zip code (used to compute the distance between you and other users) on the "Account Settings" menu.

Thanks, that's a good tip.

Unfortunately, that feature loses a lot of functionality because there's no way to filter the out-of-date profiles when you select distance as your sort field. What's really needed is two separate parameters that can be chosen independently: maximum distance, and last visit. One of the two could be used as the sort parameter, but the other would have to have a separate selection box.

I believe they do, look again

edited to add:  there is a sort by date joined and date visited.

The distance search is now secondarily sorted by last login.  This does not achieve what you have requested but it's an improvement.

Thanks, but no, they don't. Because distance and dates are in the same drop-down list, you can't apply both parameters at the same time, which would enable you to search for only active profiles within the distance you want.

To be honest, it's not much of an improvement. Sorting each set of profiles that are the exact same distance away accomplishes nothing very useful, especially when the last visit date isn't visible in the search results. What's needed is the ability to filter out all the profiles that are too inactive when sorting by distance, or, to filter out all the profiles that are too far away when sorting by last visit date. Anything short of that doesn't really help.

I used alt years ago, but only to put up a personal ad.  The Kaptin found me there, but it was back in the time when receiving messages and contacting other members were still free.    We had a silver membership for a year, which expired recently, and found most of the people there were just looking to get off.  That, and we got tired of the constant parade of boob and cock shots.  I have boobs, and the Kaptin's got a dick.  We do know what those parts look like, and don't need to see any more, thank you very much.

I've never gotten anywhere with alt.  I remember I couldn't e-mail anyone without paying, and if I recall correctly I couldn't even view people's profiles.  A site like that will have to survive without Lam.

B.com has been pretty quiet since they killed e-mail for non-paying users.  They still have active forums, but they're moderated by some fucking assholes (I can say that here), and since it's impossible to e-mail anyone who isn't a paying member, I stay away for the most part.  Chat seems to work better on b.com than on Collarme, but I can just chat in IM if someone is interesting enough to chat with.

Maybe it's a male/female thing with alt because i have a free account there and i can send emails and view profiles - i will say if i don't visit the site for a long while i have to log in a few days before they allow me to view the profiles again but if you are persistent and keep trying they will start to pop up. Maybe it's a glitch i don't know - but i have viewd many profiles there and send emails.

while bondage.com was bought out by alt.com, you can still list your e-mail address and messenger address in your profile to be able to contact others without paying for a membership; they only reason why people choose to pay there is to view adult rated pictures and to use e-mail directly through their site...

as a matter of fact, you are even given a choice of whether or not you want outside e-mail sent to you there, so even if don't want to list your contact information in your profile, you still have an option of whether or not you can be contacted by anyone on the internet.

I stopped using alt soon after I discovered CM, I got sick of the constant pics of dicks. If that is their best asset, I don't want them.
My experience with alt was it was a meat market and a good place to find a fuck, but not really good for anything else. As a female I had no trouble with emails, something to do with hits on my profile ... never really understood it. I found the chat rooms to be bitch fests and on a couple of occassions really nasty, though I may have just been unlucky to hit them at bad times.
Either way I am much happier here and do not miss alt at all.

In general, figure it out.  Those that PAY to search most likely take their search more seriously.  Free sites you find a lot of mooches and bumms.  I know of many men (equal women) who use this as a free-ride to search for someone.  Some women here make more money and are more educated than the men and they are submissives. Lordy.  You get what you pay for. Sometimes, it is fluke that you meet a responsible, capable person, sheer fluke. I wouldn't pay or use a free site to find a man, either way is cheezy. He should appear in person. By miracle HA!

I've made a few good contacts at Alt. There are some very real, very good people there. However, there are a few serious problems with Alt that have made me a CollarMe convert.

1. Alt operators find every way they can to squeeze more money out of you, even to the point of reducing the access of membership classes, to force you to upgrade if you want to be able to do the things you're used to doing. As a male, I can hardly do anything with a free membership. A premium membership is needed simply to view other members' profiles.

2. The Alt site operators spend tons of time fooling around with the cosmetics of the webpages, giving different looks and crap like that, but very little time fixing bugs and making searches and other features more useful.

3. There are TONS of bogus and extremely outdated profiles on the site. Since Alt evidently leaves profiles up indefinitely, there are profiles which haven't been active for several years. I'm sure they do this because it gives the impression that they have many more active members than they really do. This relates to 1. above.

4. They have no decent forums to speak of. Their "magazine" is crap. It's supposed to be full of "articles" on various topics, but it's really nothing more than a handful of people posting poorly-written stories and fantasies of their own. The "interest groups" aren't much better. All they're after is volume, not quality; frequency of posting is rewarded, no matter how trivial and infantile the posts are. I got sick of the foolish banter almost immediately.

Bondage.com has much better discussion groups than Alt, but many of them aren't very active.

When I first discovered CollarMe, I thought it was a rather simplistic copy-cat version of Alt and Bondage.com. That was mainly because the search functions were so poor. Now that I've been here a while, I see that the forums are very good, and it seems that there is a much higher percentage of REAL people here.

I'm beginning to get addicted to CollarMe.
