IMO, this was a carefully calculated move.  People are already getting sick of the rhetoric and of hearing the same names over and over again for so many months.  By coming into the fray right now he will get a helluva boost just by being the new guy on the block, he will offer a bit of relief from the other candidates who already have high negatives just from starting the campaign season so early.

The last poll I saw had Thompson right up near the front of the pack, even before he announced officially.

If it were to come down to Thompson vs. Hillary, he would kick her ass in a national election simply because of her extremely high negatives.



Thompson looks more presidential as well. Believe it or not, that does matter a lot. That's simple psychology. People look at the president not just policy-wise but as the head of state. People tend to want someone who is strong and acts like a leader. Hillary is going to have a serious disadvantage in those presidential debates if Thompson is the nominee.

Thompson also doesnt come off with that elitist attitude that most politicians seem to have these days. And I seriously think that attidue is what is turning people off to politics. We need to get the corrupt elitists out of the government and start electing politicians that have some element of common sense. That's the problem with not only the White House but with Congress as well. No one has any common sense anymore.

      Have you been standing too close to Fargle's machine that turns hemp into deisel fuel, Cyber???  He looks like his face is falling off.  I suspect his candidacy will be more like Wesley Clark or Howard Dean.  I doubt I'd vote for him, but I might have to risk popcorn-lung while watching the fun.

Status: offline 		Well then who is going to be the GOP nominee, Heretic? It has to be someone. Rudy is not going to make it. His performance in the debate was terrible and there is no way the moral values people will vote for him. He's out.
Republicans do not trust McCain...he's out.
Ron Paul is the one who reminds me of Howard Dean. He has a huge internet campaign and a bunch of people that call into Fox after every debate. But he has no ground campaign. He's won a few mionor straw polls but overall the GOP party does not agree with his isolationism and anti-military ideas. I mean when he's got far-left Democrats saying they like him, that signals a problem. He's out.

So who does that leave? Romney, Thompson, and maybe Huckabee. This seems to be who is truely emerging as the guys who will be there into Feb. Romney is leading in Iowa and New Hampshire. Thompson is near the top in South Carolina. And Rudy is putting all his chips into Florida.

Im not going to talk about the Dems right now because everyone and their uncle knows Hillary has the nomination all but locked up.

It's way, way too early to be looking at those national opinion polls for the general election. The GOP vote is fragmented so much right now that it really isn't a very good statistical observation. They will get slightly more accurate in March. But remember back in 2000. Al Gore was 11 points ahead of Bush 60 days before the election. By election day, it evened up. A lot can happen. Trying to predict the general election this far out is like trying to predict the Super Bowl.

Status: offline 		Excuse me for saying so but can't you argue politics without the name calling on each other.  Opinions are just that.  On either side of the lines.  I read this stuff and my stomach turns over.  I'd throw up on all of you. LOL.
 
Second, I watched and read some of the information on what is going on.  Everything is going so fast.  Kind of like Christmas starting August or September instead of Thanksgiving.  Everyone started early, getting a jump on it.  California changed its election date to get a jump on it.
 
Third, I don't see what is wrong with an Actor being in politics.  They seem to be there any way whether we want them or not.  Stating causes, working along side candiates, some have even killed a president.  History is full of strange bedfellows. 
 
I am a Republican by nature but I also vote for who I feel will do the better job.  I am not one to stay on total party lines and I use common sense more times then not to guide me.
 
I have yet to decide, but I like Fred Thompson.  I also like others on the tickets.

       That's comparing schoolyard tag, to the NFL.  In '72, the man they called Tricky Dick had the full power of the office to play with.  In the race with Gore, Bush was only very well connected. 

       If we want a comparison to '00, then it's Nixon's loss to Kennedy in '60.  You've studied Nixon, Sinergy.  Couldn't he have pulled the same shit Gore did in Florida with the Illinois vote?

       That one landed us in a shitty war too.  (Hmmm  Did I already pack that tin-foil hat?)
