subcheryl -> how do you learn how to use whips (7/14/2005 8:25:36 AM)

I am realativly new to the Lifestyle, but was thinking about whips the other day and was wondering how you learn to use them? Am assuming you would not start out on a real human being, due to inexperience and possiblility of harming your person. but what do you practice on and when do you know you are ready to try it on a real live person. My Master doesn't do whips so didn't ask him, but was just wondering. Thanks for all who share with me on this.

Find a trainer/tutor who knows how. Get a good whip, 4 foot is a good start.

Some people start on pillows, some people start on trees, some people start on post its on the wall.

Play with the whip, get it flexible, work it. New whips are stiff. Once you have your target, start focusing on it. Try just brushing it side to side, up and down to feel out what strokes work best for you. Once you have general control over the whip in this way, you can begin to increase your stroke strength and speed.

Once you've got great accuracy here, start gaining more control, move forward and back, start learning to flick it and learn about the wrapping and breaking points of your whip.

But caution, whips are one of the things I put on my "don't learn from the internet" list. THese are general guidelines but should not be taken as full on advice or nearly what it would take to become truly competent in whips. Go find someone offline.

Do you mean floggers or actual 20 foot long bull whips? If you mean bull whips they are very hard to use correctly, and if used correctly simply rip open flesh. Someone who has been whipped correctly will wear the scars for the rest of their life. They aren't something to be used lightly, and surely don't "practice" on a human or any other living creature.

subcheryl -> RE: how do you learn how to use whips (7/14/2005 8:35:43 AM)

Thank you EmeraldSlave, appreciate the reply. I am not going to learn to use it, just one of those things that you read about and you wonder how it is done and how one goes about learning to do it. Not really sure that would be one of my things, LOL, kind of a soft limit I guess. If Master wanted to do it and learned and I had seen him practice and knew he really had a handle on it, than would try it. But he isn't into that so guess don't have to worry. Just curious, I guess, one of those things that you just want to know about. Again thank you.

subcheryl -> RE: how do you learn how to use whips (7/14/2005 8:38:44 AM)

LOL, CitizenWolf that picture alone is probably why am not too interested in experiencing the whip myself. Just as I told EmeraldSlave, it is one thing I read about that was just wondering how one learned to use one. you know curious minds want to know. Thank you for sharing.

CitizenWolf -> RE: how do you learn how to use whips (7/14/2005 8:45:32 AM)

Yeah in the hands of a properly trained wielder the whip can be a weapon. I've seen guys do some crazy stuff with them. Most people think it's about just beating someone who's tied to a poll (think Jesus or slavery) but with the proper wrist/body movement you can crack someone a couple feet from you. They're pretty intense.

Archer -> RE: how do you learn how to use whips (7/14/2005 11:19:31 AM)

I started using the singletail in about 2002 so about 3 years of working them.
The people who taught me and gave me the standards of when I could play with people with a whip had various opinions anywhere from when you can do this this and this then you are ready to it'll be at least a year before you are ready, so even expert opinions vary.

I am a performance based kinda person so I took the when you can do this approach myself and have been safely playing with people for about 2.5 years. My current whip is a 4 ft bull with a 2 ft fall, and 10" handle. Many play spaces won't let me use it due to length/space requirements. So 4 ft overall length is about what you want for play.

Now the first training standard I had was to be able to cut 1/2 to 1" off the end of uncooked spagetti when I could do that consistantly then I moved on the using a square of TP in a closepin hanging from a string. When I could throw the whip 50 times in a row moving but not tearing the TP I was ready to play with people. I would not suggest that you simply take this standard and addopt it it is simply the testing that I was required.
It took me about 6 months of practice to get to the point where I was ready to play wth people.

I've played with people stikeing them without cutting skin many times so if used correctly they can give anything from a light brushing effect actually at a warm up level to cutting skin and bleading, it's all about how much control you have with the whip. They DO NOT always have to be instuments of bloddy cuts, they are always capable of it, which is part of the rush and trust.

Not being a masochist, I actually get BORED when all they do is the flashy feather touching stuff. I don't mind being used for target practice, but yeesh, give me something to react to.

Also find it funny when they try and crack it near my ear to make me jump since I'm fairly immune to it at this point.

Kinda like with knife play when all they do is just graze over the skin and make asinine comments about accidentally cutting off a nipple.

I generally don't brag about being a difficult or heavy bottom, but I crave intensity.

The whip is a fabulous tool however for having an immense range of sensations and uses.

I guess you're going to have to define "correctly" for me. I've been whipped with a single tail to the point of bruising and drawing blood but I will not carry scars for the rest of my life. This was done by someone who has over a decade of experience with single tails. In fact I carried the scars for barely two weeks. IMO, using a whip "correctly" for WIITWD is different from using one to inflict harm. Can you define what you mean by "correctly"?

I agree. That's the beauty of the single tail. In the hands of someone who is skilled in their use they have a huge range of sensations from feather touch to 'feels like someone lit a fire on my back and won't put it out." In the hands of someone who isn't skilled.....well, they should just stick to pillows, leaves and other inanimate objects [;)]

By correctly I meant for their original intention. Yes I understand in the BDSM world they can be used for pleasure for those who desire the punishment. If used "correctly" in the BDSM realm they should never scar. If you had a "scar" for 2 weeks that was just a welt (unsure of spelling). I was just pointing out the potential for serious damage and danger if the OP just decided to "try it out" on someone without understanding the full realm of possiblities. I'm a pessimistic person by nature so I immediately see the potential for serious harm in a new person "trying out" a dangerous tool with no control. Just lookin out for people LOL [:)] Safe, sane, and consentual...first word is safe LOL

I see what you are saying. I guess I got tripped up by the word "correctly" because to me what you are describing is the incorrect use for WIITWD. Thanks for explaining.

Vancouver_cinful -> RE: how do you learn how to use whips (7/14/2005 1:49:55 PM)

If you are talking about singletails and bullwhips, I know that in my community there are both classes on it, and a group of dominants that get together and practice and hone their skills.

Depending on where you live there might be similar options. In Vancouver we have several organizations that put on workshops in just about anything you could want to learn about.

One of the many wonderful perks about being involved in your local BDSM community offline...There are always people around to share with...

Get a whip. Put a piece of tape or something on the door. The woman I knew who taught me this used the peep hole in her front door. Basically she aimed for the peep hole. Taught herself until she was barely brushing it.
Took her a couple of year's though.

Just being accurate with a single tail does not mean you will be good either. Your model could move the slightest bit and get torn up. I saw that year's ago at a Black Rose demonstration. Her vagina looked like hamburger because she didn't stay perfectly still.

MrThorns -> RE: how do you learn how to use whips (7/14/2005 2:32:35 PM)

I practice with tissue paper hung from a clothesline and attempt to cut small pieces from the corners. Other times I will just do the "feather touch" and hit the paper without tearing it at all.

Anyone can draw blood with a bullwhip. It just takes practice to develop the control it takes to draw blood exactly where you want to. (Or to avoid drawing it at all.)

Find a mentor, group, workshop, etc. They should at least get you started with some basic techniques that you can take home and practice.

Lordandmaster -> RE: how do you learn how to use whips (7/14/2005 2:38:25 PM)

The first question you have to ask yourself--and no one has yet brought this up--is what you want to use the whip for. If you want to learn how to extinguish candles with a flick of the wrist, then practice extinguishing candles with a flick of the wrist. I think it's more likely that you want to use the whip on another person, and then the first thing you need to know is why that other person wants to be whipped, and why you want to whip him or her.

Learning the skill is really quite mundane--as much as those people in their leather pants like to brag about their proficiency. Learning the reason why you want to acquire the skill in the first place is what separates the people I'm interested in from the munch-and-play-party crowd.

Over the year's I've been told by many in order to swing a bullwhip with 100% accuracy you must have 20-20 vision as well.

I know many a glass wearing doms who cannot swing one.

Although, that is pure hearsay. It has been repeated to me by many people though.

I had never heard that before. I wear glasses from time to time (mostly for reading), but then I can't claim 100% accuracy anyways.

I'm good enough to hit in the general area (within 3-5 inches I would guess) of where I want to work and am able to "feel" when a shot is off and allow slack to divert the strike. I know some incredible whip throwers, but even they will tell you that they aren't 100% accurate...20/20 vision or not.

FelinePersuasion -> RE: how do you learn how to use whips (7/14/2005 4:16:03 PM)

One thing nobody else mentioned I see, is the need to protect your eyes. The local Domina's here get together to do a class on using whips, and they make any test subjects wear goggles as well as themself to protect their eyes. And it is possible to accidently lash your ownself.

LadyAngelika -> RE: how do you learn how to use whips (7/14/2005 6:58:23 PM)

You've gotten much good advice here and not much more I can add. Actually, I even got some good ideas for single tail practice!

I have gotten together with another Dominant that bottoms to me now and then and we try things out on one another. I find that works well.
