The first 21 days are the worst. If you can not smoke for 21 days you'll most likely beat the craving.

Raw carrots are a great help. Especially when they're used with the gum.

It may be rather sneaky, but ask him not to smoke in your prescence or home. You can cite several reasons:
1) YOUR health, second hand smoke is deadly
2) Your neighbour's health. If you live in an apartment or condo, your smoke is most definitely affecting them. And as a previous poster has commented on, it is unsafe for children to be around. And plenty of people, regardless of age, have asthma.
3) Your neighbour's comfort. I don't have asthma, but smoke of any type gives me a headache. People smoking in the dorm next to me have caused me to be unable to be in my own room.
4) The smell. Enough said.
5) The smell does ruin proptery values.
6) And if all else fails, it is a fire hazard!

If he wants to quit, hang out in smoking free bars. He can't light up, and there is less temptation from those around him.

And if negative re-enforcement doesn't work...Could positive reenforcement work if he's willing? Do a certain activity with him that he likes only when he has not smoked that day.

tough love, no excuses ....... geez what a bunch or crap here ..... all everyone talks about is drugs, patches, gimmicks and the latest tricks or fads ....... quitting simply comes down to 2 words ---- WILL POWER ..... mind over matter

either that or you see enough close friends and family die or lung cancer or emphysema or COPD and hopefully you will make the connection

come again? the actual physical addiction, that is your body going haywire without nicotine, only lasts for 72 hours. However, and this is where smoking gets you with a double whammy, the mental addiction can take significantly longer to overcome. I take it this is what your talking about?

I have been trying to quit for more than a year and I have actually succesfully reduced the amount I have smoked and kept it within acceptable (in my book) limits. I used to smoke 3 FULL packs a day and this is NO JOKE. When I made the decision to reduce the amount I smoked, it was HARD! it took only a week or two to adjust to however, so everyone is different. I am now smoking between 7-15 cigarettes a day and have stood at that rate for months, so it is a HUGE victory for me. The next step will be to quit altogether.

I know this becaue I come from a farming background and smoking is a very common habbit for people in the mid-west, especially farmers. Literally everyone in my family has smoked at one time or another. I have an aunt who smoked for all of her adult life and is in her 50's who just gave up the habbit. it took her about a month to get over it, maybe longer. But she is no longer smoking.

There are some things I would like to point out that are not obvious to people who haven't tried quiting before. Your body will undergo other changes when you reduce or eliminate nicotine intake. For instance, have you ever noticed that moderate to heavy smokers ingest a LARGE amount of caffeine compared to a non-smoker? ever wonder why? Because nicotine eliminates 50% of all caffeine within the body. So when you quit, you will ingest less caffeine and gain some weight. (because your body slows down, nicotine is after all a stimulant).

Different methods work for different people BUT there is a key. The person quiting has to WANT to quit or they never will. It sounds simple, but the change MUST come from that person. It cannot be forced onto someone and this is what all the anti-smoking nuts dont realise.

That is mostly true, however you can be so highly addicted to nicotine that your body begins to malfunction when it is suddenly deprived of it. THIS IS DANGEROUS PEOPLE, DONT DO THIS! If you are a heavy smoker, use Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRTs) also known as patches. Or whatever nicotine therapy you wish but STEP DOWN! People have become suicidal and heavily depressed when they have gone "cold turkey" from being a heavy smoker. Granted, there is no physical danger in doing this, but there is definately a mental danger not to mention a significantly higher chance of failure.

I would also like to take on this myth of "second hand smoke" that kills. Sure, if you spend 24/7 in a smoke filled room, it will cause you problems. However I am yet to meet anyone dying in the hospital and when I asked them what from they replied, "second hand smoke."

I have actually heard ads say that second smoke is WORSE than smoking which is total BUNK! How can a person who inahales a cooler, dilluted, smoke receive worse lung damage than someone who is sucking the butt end of a cigarette and getting 100% pure undiluted smoke? It doesnt make sense. If this were true, wed all be dying because there is enough pollution in the atmosphere to do WAY worse damage than any brief exposure to second hand smoke. Think of it this way, there is enough radiactive material in the atmosphere that everyone reading this has plutonium in their bodies.

I also hate people who curse tobacco smoking on one hand, but praises the medicinal value of SMOKING Marijuana. Marijuana is a much thicker smoke than tobacco and conatins MANY more carcinogens than tobacco. Essentially, there is no benefit from smoking anything.

there is a new drug out as of Feb. this year. "champix" appearantly has a huge success . I'll let you know if it works.....
