Personally, 'my' ideal is an 16" - 18" fall but, 'ideal' is subjective and going to vary from person to person. Since you only have 11" strips with which to work and some of that 11" is going to be eaten up with insertion into your handle you're probably going to be looking at a fall of 8.5" - 9" or so. That would be my absolute minimum unless I was making a flogger strictly for the purpose of OTK in which case, I need them shorter since I'm so short myself. It doesn't sound like you have a lot of material, (if I understood you correctly, you have two notebook size sheets of very thin leather) so you're probably going to have to settle for an OTK or warm-up flogger.. which, if it's a first attempt, that's as good a place as any to start.

over the summer i made one 22 inch falls and a 10 inch handle suedue and its great for a nice thud :)

I don't think there is an "ideal" length for a flogger's tails or fall (the name of the 'whip' part). It all depends on what kind of flogger you want to make. I have floggers that range in fall lengths ranging from 6" to 26". However, with an 11" maximum I'd stay away from braiding the tails as it will shorten them.

Side topic (handle length) - I do have an interesting flogger that has a 28" flexible handle with 18" braided tails (46" total length). You don't really swing it like a regular flogger, but rather bend the handle, release and then swing. The energy from the handle does most of the work (best lazy-Dom flogger, ever) or if you put a decent swing into it, it is extremely mean. Needless to say it isn't even close to blanced.

Hey look! I figured out how to use the Search function. (Do I get a cookie?)

Digging up an oldie but a goodie... I probably should have read this before I started working on making floggers. But, I'm working on my 'skill sets' so everyone has to start somewhere.

Just made my first set of matching floggers. Got a little Overly Happy and made the first one with a 16 inch handle and 37 inch falls. It's impressive... but I don't know if I'll ever get to USE it! It's to long to swing indoors. I'm going to have to go outside, wrap an old quilt around a tree and start trying to learn to handle it. (I don't want the tree bark to tear up my new toy!) My neighbors are going to think I've totally lost my mind.

I was so impressed with the other thread with the video for the 6 point reverse Florentine pattern... I had to make a pair of matching flogger to try it out! So, now I have a matched set of three. The smaller pair have 18 inch falls. Much more manageable.

My rule of thumb for floggers is very simple. With your arm relaxed and down by your side,and the handle butt comfortably at the balance point-the flogger tips should clear the floor.

Ten inches is pretty much too short for anything but a pussy whip. I usually go with 18 to 20. I am six feet two inches in stature. I flog florentine most of the time-unless I am using a quirt or a cat.

I agree with leatherist..... again.

There is a guy i have seen that has a flogger with something like 36 inch falls, its almost a comedy show watching him try to be accurate. Almost no matter how you throw it, you will be dragging it on the ground, covering the falls with junk. I literaly watched a bottom yawn while she was being flogged with it because he took so long to try and get a decent stroke.

Floggers are such interesting devices.

Those used by the Royal Navy usually had falls of 20 inches, made of untwisted howser line, (mooring line) made of hemp, with anywhere from 4 to 24 individual whips, depending on the preference of the Bosun who would administer the punishment.

In the american navy, floggers were had a combination of hemp, braided canvas and leather, all oiled or tarred to maintain stiffness.

Sometime in the early 1800's buckskin became a material in the flaws, and these were primarily used on female slaves one did not want to scar.

Personally, I dont like one with falls over 20 inches, and I prefer to use hemp rope and buckskin in the falls, makes for some very nice welts, but nothing that will last more than a few hours.

Then of course there is the naval lash, a belaying pin with a 24 inch length of knotted canvas, which was used to encourage the sailors to work faster. The knots were tied in 2 inch intravals and under a well trained hand could leave no mark or cut deep into the flesh. One Royal Navy bosun was so skilled he could leave cuts that made the shape of an anchor on a man's back.

Now THAT would be impressive!

This big one may end up just being used for photos and intimidation. Sort of like my chain mail flogger.

Now chainmail floggers can be alot of fun. Putting them in the freezer before using them with electrical play can give some very intersting sensations.
