In case of an event that could cause the extinction of Human Nature (like an asteroid or something like that ).Do you believe the government would give you a warning or would they be to concerned about a major panic and keep it quite?

The warning would come from the scientific community.

There are too many astronomers to silence them all, and the science too exact to hem and haw and say "maybe, maybe not".

Well, I am just about old enough to remember the 'protect and survive' leaflets they gave out on what to do in case of a nuclear attack. The basic thing was to hide behind the sofa (with lots of tinfoil to deflect the blast!) for 14 years
Now, forgive me if I'm wrong but isn't hiding behind the sofa what one ought to do whilst threatened by Daleks rather than a nuclear holocaust.
In my more cynical old age I can't help wondering if this advice was intended to make sure people died tidily in their own homes, rather than clogging up the roads that would be needed for troop movements and the relocation of government officials

They already surreptitiously have given warning of a potential asteroid impact. (There is no danger of that severity involved, but they are not that bright.) Haven't you seen the movies Armageddon and Deep impact nor the series Stargate SG1? Such productions are not merely financed for their entertainment value, but because the powers that be are scared.

As for intended nuclear holocausts: they have given warning of such genocides also in various movies such as Dr. Strangelove and most ominously and recently in the various Terminator movies. The last movie of the Terminator series ends with the admonishment that the nuclear holocaust was inevitable.

At least hiding behind the sofa was more comfortable than hiding under the table which my generation was told to do. There are things you could do to your partner behind the sofa, a lot easier than doing them under the table. At least you would have the possibilty of a distraction!

I agree with you but i cant help but wonder if they would not try to mislead us by making it sound like we have nothing to worry about. That it is smaller then it seems.

They usually do so when they are themselves intent on a genocide, as during the holocaust and most recently when Bush claimed that he was not fighting a war against islam.

So in you're opinion who can you turn to to get the most reliable info on anything?

Me.

If we were in imminent danger at an exact day and time.  No, they would keep quiet.

However as others have said some would try to warn...however the government would shut
them up.  As well as criticize them so we didn't know who to believe.  They've already done that
on numerous occassions, why wouldn't they when it was imminent danger?

pahunkboy -> RE: Would they give you a fair Warning? (9/17/2007 7:45:50 AM)

they would say there is a heightened alert of security- and we must go to war to stop it.

when the lst village is burned they will be fighting over 1 nuggut of gold

Great thread!!!!     in an unusual variation; i am going to award Pahunks informal post of the day to the OP of this thread. A very thought provoking thread indeeed!

Congrats!

Kinda like Jay trying to snap one off with Bethany in Dogma would be about the only good that would come of a warning.

What would a girl do?  run off the edge of the earth, or what?

murmur -> RE: Would they give you a fair Warning? (9/17/2007 8:41:23 AM)

Government would tell us at the last minute. Economy and money are too important to risks panic on the people who would leave with their precious wallets.
Scientifics are telling us right now. And just look, what's the Government doing?

Mayhem1703 -> RE: Would they give you a fair Warning? (9/17/2007 10:16:33 AM)

No...  To hide from Daleks, you just run upstairs....  lol

luckydog1 -> RE: Would they give you a fair Warning? (9/17/2007 12:07:51 PM)

Probably would keep it quiet.  What would be gained in causing a panic?  That would seem to increase the chances of a total extinction.  Wasn't it just a few years ago that a near miss came flying in out of nowhere and was detected just a few hours before it would have hit us.  In an event like that the hordes of people flooding the rural areas would lower the surival chances of humanity in general, and cause a lot of un productive/pointless suffering.  You should have food, water, medical /suvirval stuff in your home, and stay there if you can, every part of the world can get hit with a massive disaster with virtually no warning.  It should always be in the back of our minds.  If they saw it 10 years in advance and there are fortunes to be made fixing the problem, you bet they would tell right away.

Estring -> RE: Would they give you a fair Warning? (9/17/2007 12:12:06 PM)

They would give you enough warning so that you could pack up and move.

Where would we go?  No, I doubt if they would tell us (at least until AFTER the fact in the instance they might have averted it).

Real0ne -> RE: Would they give you a fair Warning? (9/17/2007 3:44:57 PM)

they would keep it secret. wouldnt want to panic anyone so they ran home to prepare and get in their bomb shelters from the nuke threat days.  They would rather not panic anyone so we can all die in our offices while working rather than trying to stay alive in a shelter.

but there would always be some scientists who would at least try to get the message out even if only by word of mouth which is what it would be since the gov has the media in its pocket or vice versa take your pick.
