ORIGINAL: Termyn8or Taking investors now for a six star restaraunt. All employees must smoke and it is a private club so the patrons can. The trick is to put the heating and cooling vents under the tables and booths, even the bar. The suction is at the top. What you do is to SPEND THE MONEY to change the air in the place. To stay efficient you need air to air heat exchangers for the heavy heating and cooling seasons, but you continue to change the air even when the HVAC system reaches setpoint. That means the blowers never turn off. If the system is designed correctly, you can sit right next to someone smoking a cigar and not smell a thing. I have been in such places and it seems to work. It is a very expensive and costly system of course, but in the smoking thread we learned that some people seem to smell with their eyes. Someone mentioned being able to smell ajacent drivers' smoke if they had their windows open. This is impossible because ALL passenger cars sold in this country have positive air pressure in the passenger compartment. In most, the blower never goes off whenever the key is on. I am not sure, but I think this has been a safety requirement for some time now, to keep the occupants from breathing the exhaust. Now planes are different. A long time ago they had switches on the no smoking signs. They turned them on for takeoff and landing. This was to keep you from accidentally burning the upholstery. Later, without any laws being they banned it because they have a real and countable expense in fuel economy to bring more fresh air into the cabin. It causes more drag. Now there are minimum standards, go figure. Fact is, business is business and they would fly you overseas in a large Thermos bottle if they could. Now that money rules, you can sit next to a non-smoker who just showered, and catch their cold or flu, or any other contagious disease for the matter. And those of you who are hypesensitive to smoke or body odor, are people who wear too much perfume offensive to you as well ? T Let's see... on air exchangers in restaurants, it sounds like a laminar flow room, where you can't smell what's right next to you...or even your own farts. A favorite activity of some of my coworkers at the time. Smelling cigarette smoke from the car in front of you, yep I've done it. Had the vents open, windows closed. Now, I've not heard the positive pressure argument, but that even when your vents are off, there is still some air going through the vents to keep any exhaust fumes from accumulating. On planes, I've had more problems from SBV farts and perfume. The perfume doesn't offend me, but often gives me a migraine. And I hate landing with a migraine, especially if I have to drive 2-4 hours after I get off the plane. thornhappy
