YourhandMyAss -> Does any one know about this supposed artical in the news paper (9/23/2007 1:25:20 PM)

mom said something to me today that there's a newspaper artical stating, airlines are making fat people who smell put on deoderant or something before you can get on the plain. I think she has no idea what she's talking about and has perhaps misread an artical, or maybe she's just trying to  push her own agenda, I dunno. I know she's not trying to be malicious though.

I haven't heard of any article, although you could google it, using a couple keywords.

But what if it's true? Airlines already make fat people buy a second seat to accomodate them. And what if a person, regardless of their size, has an overbearingly bad smell? In an enclosed compartment, that would definitely irritate and offend the other well-smelling passengers.

umm- who wants to smell a bunch of toilet water?  why just targey fat people when some cultures are not bathing daily?

maybe the closed air system can be redesinged.

I'll be the first to tell you I'd be offended if someone stank, and I had to sit next to them, or around them and their smell was bad enough to offend, however wouldn't  or shouldn't airport security have higher priorities than looking for fat people who may smell?

lazarus1983 -> RE: Does any one know about this supposed artical in the news paper (9/23/2007 1:40:16 PM)

I doubt that that would be airport security's job, it would probably fall on a stewardess or someone at the gate to notice an overbearing smell.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Does any one know about this supposed artical in the news paper (9/23/2007 1:46:23 PM)

the artical states that the airlines has the right to order you off the flight if you smell bad, or are barefoot, or are dressed in a way the airline officals deem offensive. Or if you're to fat to wear a seatbelt.

I'm just glad people can't smoke on airplanes anymore.

I'm not sure if the ones who smoke just before realize just how badly they smell afterwards.  Their poor sense of smell.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Does any one know about this supposed artical in the news paper (9/23/2007 1:52:47 PM)

yeah, I know, I used to take a cab ride with a taxi driver who smoked and when I'd come home my dad's state peww you reak of cigaretts, which wasn't fair, cause it wasn't me smoking, and I'd just bathed and washed my hair that day and now it stunk.

I dont think I am entitled to be comfortable all the time. If a fat person sits next to me on a plane - that sucks. If a smelly person sat next to me anywhere, that sucks too. But I'd suck it up and deal with it instead of thinking the world owes me comfort and the least disturbance to my comfort requires a new rule or law to get things in check.

From a guy that travels extensively, allow me to say....maybe some people should bathe.

On a sort of related note - since smoking has been mentioned....... they banned smoking in English pubs a few months back now, and it was great at first.

Then the stench of tobacco smoke dropped away - leaving only the smell of the clientele, replete with farts, belches, body odour et al, which had previously been masked by cigarettes.

Apparently they are now testing various aromas to put into pubs to provide a new mask for the unpleasantness. The one which works best it seems is......... tobacco smoke aroma.

So, there's the solution; every flight must have a 1;10 smoker ratio, ideally pipe or cigar smokers but cigarettes will do at a push. This way there is at least a certainty over how the flight will smell, regardless of the habits of passengers.

Taking investors now for a six star restaraunt. All employees must smoke and it is a private club so the patrons can.

The trick is to put the heating and cooling vents under the tables and booths, even the bar. The suction is at the top.

What you do is to SPEND THE MONEY to change the air in the place. To stay efficient you need air to air heat exchangers for the heavy heating and cooling seasons, but you continue to change the air even when the HVAC system reaches setpoint. That means the blowers never turn off.

If the system is designed correctly, you can sit right next to someone smoking a cigar and not smell a thing. I have been in such places and it seems to work.

It is a very expensive and costly system of course, but in the smoking thread we learned that some people seem to smell with their eyes. Someone mentioned being able to smell ajacent drivers' smoke if they had their windows open. This is impossible because ALL passenger cars sold in this country have positive air pressure in the passenger compartment. In most, the blower never goes off whenever the key is on. I am not sure, but I think this has been a safety requirement for some time now, to keep the occupants from breathing the exhaust.

Now planes are different. A long time ago they had switches on the no smoking signs. They turned them on for takeoff and landing. This was to keep you from accidentally burning the upholstery. Later, without any laws being they banned it because they have a real and countable expense in fuel economy to bring more fresh air into the cabin. It causes more drag. Now there are minimum standards, go figure. Fact is, business is business and they would fly you overseas in a large Thermos bottle if they could.

Now that money rules, you can sit next to a non-smoker who just showered, and catch their cold or flu, or any other contagious disease for the matter.

And those of you who are hypesensitive to smoke or body odor, are people who wear too much perfume offensive to you as well ?

Let's see... on air exchangers in restaurants, it sounds like a laminar flow room, where you can't smell what's right next to you...or even your own farts.  A favorite activity of some of my coworkers at the time.

Smelling cigarette smoke from the car in front of you, yep I've done it.  Had the vents open, windows closed.  Now, I've not heard the positive pressure argument, but that even when your vents are off, there is still some air going through the vents to keep any exhaust fumes from accumulating.

On planes, I've had more problems from SBV farts and perfume.  The perfume doesn't offend me, but often gives me a migraine.  And I hate landing with a migraine, especially if I have to drive 2-4 hours after I get off the plane.

So maybe there should be first class, coach, and fat smelly people sections.[;)]
