"What Do Women Want?"

I want a red dress.
I want it flimsy and cheap,
I want it too tight, I want to wear it
until someone tears it off me.
I want it sleeveless and backless,
this dress, so no one has to guess
what's underneath. I want to walk down
the street past Thrifty's and the hardware store
with all those keys glittering in the window,
past Mr. and Mrs. Wong selling day-old
donuts in their café, past the Guerra brothers
slinging pigs from the truck and onto the dolly,
hoisting the slick snouts over their shoulders.
I want to walk like I'm the only
woman on earth and I can have my pick.
I want that red dress bad.
I want it to confirm
your worst fears about me,
to show you how little I care about you
or anything except what
I want. When I find it, I'll pull that garment
from its hanger like I'm choosing a body
to carry me into this world, through
the birth-cries and the love-cries too,
and I'll wear it like bones, like skin,
it'll be the goddamned
dress they bury me in.

Well, is that what women want?

In my experience what a woman wants is what she doesn't have. Other than that, speaking as a male, how the hell should I know what a woman wants. The moment you give her what she wants, she wants something else.

I've given up trying to work out the female sex.

shhhh! ..........(Big secret) - women want to be treated as people, ie not as one single group whose members are carbon copies made to a blueprint for the exclusive benefit of men who merely need to pick any one of them to get their Ersatzmutti, wife, whore, cook, housemaid and bearer of their children.

But the red dress sounds tempting. Throw in the shoes and the bag and maybe we'll settle at that eh? After all, men being all alike its probably the best solution not to have them have to think too much.

See, this is what happens when you give them the vote: they get all uppity and think they're entitled to a conversation.........

Man/woman is getting too complicated for my liking....they should come with instructions like a table or something......e.g. "I need attention and conversation"...if this isn't for you, you can send her back without getting her out of the box.....

"I am a whore, cook, housemaid and bearer of children".....that's more like it......my only deliberation would be moving bearer of children to number 3 in the pecking order, and housemaid down one.

Spot on MC, when I'm reading the newspapers on a Sunday morning, my woman sucks a cucumber for a couple of hours in preparation for the main event: that's the extent of our knowledge sharing.

The last woman I listened to, I ended up burying her in my back garden.....she said she could cook, but produced the biggest pile of mess I've ever seen, so we had to part company. That was 5 years ago, but the wounds remain open.

I like women....I mean, I love women.....I couldn't live without them, but there's no use in them getting uppity.

Well, I don't know if it's what women want, at least not all of us, or not all of the time...

What I do know is that's a fucking good poem!

I'd never heard of her...looked at Kim Addonizio's web site and am fascinated and impressed.

Kim Addonzio is entertaining but light weight. Her poetry makes time fly and is great to read with a whiskey but her work doesn't rattle in your head and give you deeper insights into the human condition.
