Just call in sick... what can they do?  Fire you?  You've already quit/retired/won the lottery and moving to Hawaii?

I can tell you just hate to be the centre of attention but this get together isn’t really for you. It’s for the people you leave behind, the ones you may never see again. Enjoy having friends and family around you now as the memories of such occasions are what will get you through when you are alone, as we all will be alone at some point. Many reasons there are to kill yourself with a pencil but having people that love you isn’t one of them.

was that for me or the op worried about his mother attending the party?  if ir was my mother attending, i would be honored.  obviously, my Chicago neighbor doesn't see it that way.

my life is one endless roller coaster of fun and excitement (reviewing rock bands does that to me)

That sounded good I should write horoscopes although it got a bit depressing towards the end I feel.

I got the funny side - no worries CSM - ya know that people forget irony when its easier to beat someone around their head with their own words...
Hey you never know - the beating might just kill ya... so the nay-sayers may be unwittingly assisting your death!

He'd sure as hell better not call in with the excuse that his mother died. Just think how embarrassing when she walks into the party. *grins*

I’m sitting here right now wondering if I can beat myself to death with this pencil. Just keep banging away until I get the job done. Maybe I can choke myself with this mouse? If I don’t die by Friday I’m going to have the most embarrassing day or my life. Not only that – but I feel guilty for feeling embarrassed – a double whammy.
I have worked at the same place since 99. A large place, lots of people. They are throwing a going away party for me on Friday. That’s not the bad part. The bad part is that years ago my mother worked here… and they invited her!

Who the hell has their mother’s come to a work function? I’m 39 years old! Please kill me now.

You know I can have needles pushed in me. I can take pain, humiliation, verbal humiliation, objectification, and just about anything our creative minds can come up with.

But for this?

… I’m going to need aftercare.

oh, c'mon, bebe....

at least your mama doesnt come to your work and flirt with your boss.  *coughs gently*

its not MY fault, he's amused that she and i look so much alike!!

kitten, who has a date with the daughter to walk the mall in costume the end of october...

Your trying to use the pencil for a blunt force object, aint gunna happen, your not strong enough, it's not strong enough, and your not fast enough.
Now try jamming it trhough you eye! Now you get results! Personaly I like to carry zebra pens to court and to places the won't allow weapon,
cause then the pen might truely be mightier than the sword, jam it in their eye and see how they like that!
Now go and act your age, and appologise to your mother for what you have posted here,
AND THEN JAM THAT PENCIL IN YOUR EYE!

shes not your mother here-shes a co-worker wishing you well......be glad shes alive to drive you nuts-trust me-when she is gone, you will miss it......

signed, one sad chickie who buried an aunt today and was so sad to watch someone else go through the pain of saying bye to their mom.....

edited to add....i reread the op and still didnt catch the humor-must be the hellfire and brimstone sermon i sat thru at the funeral, or maybe the joint we smoked at the cemetary after most folks left........
